You can spend years learning a CoB solo. Alexi was literally a once in a generation shredder. It's so rare to get metal that just has fun and has some of the most creative riff writing. We will never see anything else like it again, Alexi will be truly missed. I remember being a teenager and me and all my guitar friends just wanted to be Alexi. We still do.

While I love Alexi as much as the next, years learning a solo is only if you literally start learning the solo when you start learning guitar. I've prob learned like 50 of his songs. After a while they get much much much easier as you get used to his techniques. Hell most COB songs I can learn in a day or two now. It's just learning the starting points for the lead runs and letting your fingers do the work after practicing them. Very great comment, but your opening statement is a bit much. I love this dude and his impact on my guitar playing, really helped me learn the whammy bar especially more than any other guitarist.

@@davidchristensen2572 Well that I guess is more to ME at least showing that since I can play it, I feel like, I dunno, I guess everyone can? After a while playing guitar well doesn't "feel" as special because since you're just a normal dude the feeling you get is more along the lines of "if I could pull it off than anyone can". That's why some of the most crazy complex guitarists are so humble. To them, they don't think they are super special in anyway, quite the opposite, so that is the reason for this comment. I guarantee though that if you REALLY put the effort into the instrument you claim to love so much, within a year, with proper persistence, this type of playing would feel more natural than anything. I apologize I wasn't trying to humble brag, more the actually opposite, basically saying "it's obtainable if you want it, and gets easier from there" From a dude that can play almost anything and not saying that like it's a bragging moment but from one learner to the next, don't look at things in terms of "skill level" look at it more as "time level" What level of time are you willing to put into that song/solo/etc if it is proportionate to the love you have for that specific peace of music, you will learn it and fast. Hell, most of the song's from symphony x I learn are so complicated by the time I get it to the point I feel "OK' with it, I have played the song so much it's not nearly as fun as it should be. Just because it became a job/challenge/persistence than fun/hobby/whenever. The first Necrophagist song I learned took me 6 months. The 2nd took 2 weeks. To give you and idea of how persistence with each individual guitarist will make each subsequent song easier. The first bodom songs took weeks/months to get down properly. Now they take a day or two. You get used to their techniques. This is the beauty of learning other peoples stuff. Just grows your technique bag, which that and theory is all really guitar is, how big both of those bags are.

@@breatheinacasket you actually helped me alot with my thinking over learning songs. i've been noodling for little less than year, learning the fretboard and getting comfortable with it, finding some riffs and melodies from top of my head. now i think im good enough to really start to learn songs, but it has been very intimidating to try to learn whole song, cant even decide where to start, what song to pick.. learning is skill also, i have to learn how to learn to play songs, and sticking to one guitarist for beginning seems to be a viable method. my current method, take shitload of speed and play 30 hours straight in one sitting is fun and i have learned quite lot doing so for a year, but now i need to start really practicing with good regime. maybe i can play something next august. random shitpost, not my fault its the drugs 😄

I remember having a really hard time learning CoB solos back in the days, all solos felt so mysteious... 1. They were hard to play in general 2. I could never seem to figure out which pickup he was using 3. I could also never seem to hear when he switched pickup 4. I could never get the same tone as him when he was sweep picking You won't believe how surprised I was when I realised he did'nt even have a neck pickup... I remember hearing him say in a rig-roundown-interview that he like to keep it simple, that's why he only had one pickup... i'll tell you though, there is nothing simple at all about playing all those solos without a neck pickup. Being able to play all those sweeps as clean as he did on a high distorted bridge pickup is'nt easy, it takes a lot of precision and talent... Rip one of my childhood heroes 😢😭❤
