Good video. Just want to put it out (I’m an NP for dermatologist and plastic surgeon), over-exfoliation has become a big issue over the last couple of years. I can’t begin to tell you how many patients we see who are doing more damage to their skin by over-use. I caution everyone NOT to over-use acids, especially if you are using prescription Retin A. As good as AHAs and BHAs are, over-exfoliating disrupts the skin barrier and can irritate your skin, particularly during the harsh winter months. Use these products wisely. Less is more.

One thing I'm struggling to understand is how often can we use cleansers containing acids? As over use of exfoliation is damaging to the skin and causes premature aging as well as sun sensitivity. So how often should you use cleanser (even gentle cleansers ie goats milk contains lactic acid, enzyme cleansers, glycolic etc), could you use daily or best not to even if gentle enough as stil is getting rid of the top layer of skin but don't stay on the skin long enough so does that it will cause no harm to the skin?

How often should I be using a glycolic acid cream? Currently using Maelove's and I know they and Drunk Elephant say to use it every night. I have been using about 3-4 times a week and my skin is fine but is that too much? Thanks!!

Elle, I have been using them together as well! I love it! When I ordered an ordinary product for the first time , year or so ago, I read a ton of their skin regimens, and while none had them together, they were never mentioned in any of the regimens to NOT mix together! 😉 You are the best! Thank you.

Well explained....thank you so much....I have really been so unsure about incorporating acids to my skin routine, just how to use them. My skin can handle retinol every night but I want to add acids. I have noticed a great improvement, I have hyperpigmentation. My skin has been on a rough road because I was doing wrong things, I just didn’t know. My research through KZread really helped. You are the one that has explained thoroughly well on how to incorporate acids with retinol. I am gonna do that. I have very dry skin, so moisture is the key as well

Hi Elle! First I hope baby girl is feeling better. Poor thing! It's tgat time of year for the kids.... I ended watching this video at 3 am and am going to watch over again. I love the idea of peeling but am afraid of doing it. I have normal skin, never break out. I just watch some of these girls diy on KZread and want to try them, purchase everything, then chicken out! Not wearing retina/retinol during the day makes perfect sense to me; I will stick to night time. I truly enjoy your tutorials; your skin/makeup speaks for itself, but you also break all down so well for us. This is going into my "keeper" file for reference. Thank you so much! Your little one is growing up to be a real doll! You look so beautiful with your hair the same colour! Two dolls!!! She must've have a very long wishlist for Santa if she loves to shop like her mom!!! Enjoy the holiday Season! Be safe and I wish you much happiness!!! ♡♡♡ Lydia

Haha such an awesome and informative video Elle! Before KZread and when I didn’t understand much and I didn’t know what was what with skincare I used to use AHA/BHA with retinols and had no issues. Then I heard you probably shouldn’t, but now you should! Too funny. It never irritated my skin so maybe I’ll go back to trying it again. I absolutely love the ordinary retinol 2% with squalane...super hydrating and no irritation, skin always looks wonderful the day after I use it. Thanks for all your tips😘!

I have debated about asking my dermatologist for a prescription for trentenoin, but I hesitate for fear it will be way too strong and I won't like how my skin looks and having to deal with the flakes for months until my skin acclimates. I tried the Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair thinking it would be mild and a good introduction for my skin. I used it every other day and my skin flaked like crazy. I backed off to one day and it was better, but I wondered if it was really doing anything. I like how you addressed that in the video that if you flake then you need to back off and let the skin re-set. I might look into the REN product. I heard Stephanie Marie talk about the Drunk Elephant Retinol and she commented that what she had been using and loving before clearly wasn't as effective as the Drunk Elephant. Thanks for all your hard work and honesty you put into your videos.

The DE Retinol is available on Sephora now. Another great option that I highly recommend, especially for those new to Retinol products or w/ more sensitive skin, is Jordan Samuels’ Étoile Oil w/ Retinol. The entire line is quite impressive & very reasonably priced. Yes, BHA, AHA and Lactic acids I incorporated into skincare by mid-20s bc I was always so extra about age prevention and youthful skin . So thankful now I did and over 40 and still use them. Vit C have used night and day for decades, it’s fantastic . I prefer Vit A over many retinols for my skin though. Wish there were more options out there for the entire body but there’s a few. Oh, I have personally been fine using products w/ AHA In it during the day as long as sunscreen was over it 😊 TY Elle 💚

I think you're awesome Elle. I'm 37 and interested in trying the Murad retinol youth serum, and the eye serum. Never used a retinol before, and haven't been too serious with my skin care routine. I've been noticing the skin around my eyes changing, and fine lines. My skin could use some brightening also. Any pointers? Don't know where to start, help!

Hi Elle love your videos...I'm currently 42 and looking into adding some extra anti aging skincare into my routine. I recently purchased the tgf booster from lemieux cause u spoke so highly of this product. I did have skin cancer in my 20's a basil cell is it safe for me to use this product? Something u said in this video about skin cancer and growth factors made me wonder?..Thanks Marissa

Thank you so much, Elle. My skin loves AHA and it’s one of my HG products. I haven’t ventured into BHA's yet as I thought they were for acne, and I’ve never ever had one zit in my life. However, I did try skinceuticals 0.5% Retinol and noticed my heart rate went up. I just put it down to feeling uptight over a work deadline. The second time was even worse with very rapid heart rate and a touch of asthma (I only ever get exercise asthma). Now I’m terrified of Retinol's, but I don’t know if it was only that one. The sad thing is my skin is looking the most glowy and healthy I could ever wish for. Do you know if that brand is 'clean' or not?

Great video! How can you easily tell if a product has growth factors? I LOVE skin care products, but I have unfortunately had to have a basal cell bump removed from my face (I’m early sixties and have been religiously using sunscreen for many years, but most sun damage is from early on in our lives - or if we don’t protect our skin now! ). Anyway, now you’ve got me worried that some of the serums and potions in my cupboard might be contraindicated for me 😱. What should I be looking for? Thx

Tank you so much for this info. U just cleared my mind of how to use this together. I started to use aha/bha products 2 years ago when I first tried Korean skin products. Form toner to washes and serums. I had oily skin and pimples on my jaw line but after few months with those products my skin is now clean and normal since than .I'm 36 years old ,an I decided that it is the right time to start with acids and why not retinols. So 2 weeks ago I started my first glycolic acid treatment. It is a 10% glycolic acid serum. I loved it immediately. As u said, u know when a product it works for your skin. Even if I read all over that retinols and acids should never be combined ,I wanted to test for my own the result. So, 4 days ago to my night routine, after the rose hip toner and the glycolic acid serum,I added a retinol cream. I have done same for 4 nights and my skin feels great. No burning, no stinging,no irritation and no drieness. (To be honest this evening I added the cream to the eye area too ,just to see how it feels ,if aggressive or what happen.)So, of course 4 days and I wait to see some bad reaction for the glycolic and retinol combination 😂 but for now nothing bad happened. Seeing your video gave me such great relief. Thank you,u are such an inspiration .

Finally a beauty blogger who not only does her research but shares it! I’ve watched others on KZread that only gush about how they love a product but they don’t explain anything about the research Surrounding the products that they’re putting on their face.. and they never share any in-depth research about what each chemical is, or for who it works best , or in-depth explanations on what chemicals do when combined what it does and why it’s in existence/ circulation, why myths surrounding them are false or hold water, or if the hype is all fluff or has truth to it, no one when explains any of that. But then I found this video!!! and Instantly subscribed. Love the way you teach. MORE MASTER CLASSES PLEASE! you have a gift for this. This save me so much time from having to go and plug away all of my hours trying to figure out all The Who what when where and why about all these chemicals :) and and also prevented me from ruining my skin!! ❤️❤️❤️

I use pixi glow tonic and differen gel at night and I have no problems. I had see the studies on it, and I figured the glow tonic was mild. And it works nicely. I also use salacidic acid on my nose area and any blemishes with my regular skin care. My age spots and malasma is fading. I dont have to use as much color corrector, foundation and concealer anymore. So I'm pleased with the results. I dont use alot of treatment styled products during the day. Just niacinamide and hydration, lots of hydration. I just think, regardless of whether retinol can be used during the day, your skin heals and rejuvenates at night, so I feel that's the best time to use treatments. I'm also photosensitive, so I take extra precautions.

Omg! Game changer girl! This is amazing! I’m excited to add the TLC with Retinal once a week! Makes so much sense. DE Retinal wahoo! I won’t be doing this during the day though. I think that’s asking for wrinkles! Lol. This information is amazing. You are such an incredible teacher. I totally understood and I will be changing my night time skin care! Thanks Elle💕💕💕

My current favorite exfoliant by far is Moon Juice’s is Beauty Shroom Exfoliating Acid Potion...impressed me more than anything I’ve used since using my first BHA years ago. I wouldn’t recommend it to those brand new to chemical exfoliation but for anyone who is looking for something new or a boost to acids they’ve been using I HIGHLY recommend it!

Thanks Elle for sharing your thoughts about acids and retinol and what the new science is saying about their use. Recently, got a sample of the L'Oreal Paris Revitalift Bright Reveal Brightening Dual Overnight Moisturizer (mouthful) and I was so hesitant to try it from all of the info I had learned previously. This one has 4% glycolic acid, vitamin C and Retinol and I used it 4x in the evenings and after 1st use I could see a positive change in my hyper pigmentation. I really had been hesitant to use it but figured if I get a bad reaction I can stop. I didn't see any negative issues. I stayed out of the sun and used an spf 50 during the day and my skin still looks great a week later. I look forward to learning more from you about clean products on the market that perform as well. Thanks again. ❤️
