Best Midsize Trucks for 2019 & 2020 ― Top-Rated Pickup Trucks

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After extensive testing, Edmunds lists the best midsize trucks. Dan Edmunds and Carlos Lago explain the merits of each truck, from off-road prowess to around-town comfort, and speak to each truck's placement in our rankings.
Best Midsize Trucks for 2019 & 2020:
2019 Honda Ridgeline 01:00
The 2019 Honda Ridgeline is a distinctive choice for a midsize pickup truck. Rather than joining the crowd with a traditional body-on-frame design, Honda uses a more car-like unibody construction and a fully independent suspension for the Ridgeline. These design choices give this truck class-leading ride comfort and excellent handling.
2020 Jeep Gladiator 03:43
The introduction of the Jeep Gladiator gives midsize-truck shoppers a new option to consider. Simply put, the Gladiator is a four-door Wrangler Unlimited with an extended wheelbase and a 5-foot cargo bed instead of the normal cargo area. This Wrangler DNA promises to give the Gladiator off-road performance that no other truck can match.
The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon has features such as lockable front and rear differentials, standard 33-inch all-terrain tires and a disconnectable front stabilizer bar that give it the ability to traverse difficult terrain with ease. But even if you're just cruising around town, you can have fun with the Gladiator's removable top and doors. It's the only convertible pickup on the market.
2020 Toyota Tacoma 06:12
The Tacoma is the quintessential pickup truck. It offers strong towing capacity, excellent off-road ability, and all the utility you could ask for in a midsize truck. Sure, it also has modern amenities and safety features that keep it competitive in an ultra-modern class of pickups. But mostly, the Tacoma is a truck that's dedicated to getting you anywhere you want to go.
The TRD Pro is sold only as a crew cab with a short bed, and it comes only in four-wheel drive. It's equipped like a loaded-up TRD Off-Road, but it sets itself apart with special styling details, including a black grille, and performance upgrades such as Fox internal bypass shocks, all-terrain tires, a thicker front skid plate, and a ride height that's an inch taller.
The TRD Off-Road offers nearly the same configuration and engine options as the TRD Sport, and its truck bed and interior and audio trimmings are identical. Off-road performance changes include extra skid plates, a lockable rear differential, and an advanced off-road traction control system with multiple terrain settings and crawl control.
2020 Chevrolet Colorado 08:48
The Chevy Colorado, like its big brother the Silverado, offers a variety of trim levels and available engines and has a comfortable ride on the highway. Its payload and towing capacities aren't as high, but it's much more maneuverable than its full-size brethren.
The somewhat off-road-ready Z71 comes standard with most of the LT's optional equipment, plus all-terrain tires (instead of all-season tires), an off-road-oriented suspension, a locking rear differential, hill descent control and unique upholstery.
If you want a real-deal off-roader, the ZR2 is your truck. The Colorado ZR2 has a raised suspension with special dampers, bigger all-terrain tires, fender flares, a special front and rear bumper for improved approach and departure angles, a spray-in bedliner, and an electronically locking rear differential.
2020 GMC Canyon 11:35
The Canyon offers some of the best towing capability in the class, along with a cushy, quiet cabin and road manners that feel more car-like than truckish. Seat comfort is impressive, and there's enough room - and enough tech - to make long road trips a pleasure.
2019 Ford Ranger 12:01
A lot of what you'll see on the Ranger will be familiar if you've spent any time in its big brother, the F-150. On the inside, the Ranger will get Ford's Sync 3 technology in addition to available features such as smartphone connectivity, blind-spot monitoring and even in-car Wi-Fi. The Ranger also comes with a healthy number of advanced safety features, including forward collision mitigation and lane keeping assist.
The FX4 Off-Road package is available on the XL, the XLT and the Lariat. It includes off-road tires, upgraded shocks and suspension tuning, an electronically locking rear axle, front tow hooks, underbody skid plates, a terrain management system, and a low-speed crawl control system called Trail Control.
2019 Nissan Frontier 14:14
The Nissan Frontier hasn't changed in three presidential administrations, not even in the face of renewed competition from rivals such as the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon and Honda Ridgeline. The Frontier lopes along with mechanicals that are more than a decade old. Inside, it's about as utilitarian as you can get, and modern tech is nowhere to be found.

Back in 2006 I was looking for a new midsize truck. I went out priced and test drove all of them. At the time I had Dodge Dakota. I didn't want the Ridgeline, but it hands down was the best performance for value. It looked kind of weird, but it had all the features I needed for a great price. So I bought one. The first time I really appreciated it was when I was driving up a sandy wash in the Mojave that would get any other truck stuck in the soft sand. That independent suspension did a fantastic job only putting power to the wheel with traction. So after 275,000 miles I gave it to my grandson and bought the new model in 2018. I also love that it doesn't ride like a truck. It's our go-to vehicle for long 1000 mile drives.

What people didn’t like about the first generation is the sloped bed sides. The second generation introduced the flat sides but it’s the rounded front that makes it look less masculine as the first one. If only they combined the chiseled front and the flat sides on the bed, they could sell much better and reduce the controversy around the Ridgeline

I get the reason the ridgie is #1, but its certainly not lighting the truck world on fire. I also totally get what you mean by saying that 5000 lbs is probably all a midsizer should tow on the regular...but...the rule of thumb is that you want a margin and you don't with 5k. i.e. if I was towing a 4800 lb camper, I would rather pull it with something that it rated to tow 6000+ to make sure the truck isn't spending its time at the limits, which hurts durability.

If I were to imagine the sort of use I might want for a utility vehicle (towing a small car down the highway, occasional camping trips, occasional hardware store or nursery trips, maybe occasional snow skiing trips) means that I would only need moderate capability, with a focus on passenger comfort and fuel economy would be a plus. The Ridgeline would be my choice too. The Colorado would be more compelling to me if GM would adapt the Silverado's 4.3 liter V6 to the Colorado (and improve the interior). I'm not into diesel, and the 3.6 isn't torquey enough for a truck IMO. Frontiers are still surprisingly good for their age; I get why people put them last in comparos, but they have a certain je ne sais quoi that I like.

I bought a used ridgeline and I’m completely happy with it. The backseat has plenty of leg room, enough for a carseat or 2, and the 5ft bed is more than enough for what I need. It’s mainly used for work commute so Im glad the ride is smooth. The only thing I don’t like is the look. Honda should’ve gave the ridgeline its own style. I used to have a full-size but dont miss it at all. It was way more than what I needed.

I'm on my second Colorado only because I needed a Crew Cab over Ext Cab. But before we bought anything, we drove everything but ended up with another Colorado! We both loved the Gladiator, but could not get past the wondering numb steering and heavy feeling. But the interior is beautiful, but you PAY for it with high prices! The Ranger ran great, but also suffers from numb steering and soft brakes, plus higher prices than all but the Gladiator! The Frontier was ok, but felt old. So we ended up with a nice Colorado Crew Cab W/T 4x4, V6, that came with every option available on a W/T, plus the Boron Steel Skid Plates the dealer added on along with an 84 months 100,000 miles Bumper to Bumper Warranty, for just under 32k!! that's $5,000-$10,000 LESS than the others!! The fact we used the last one to tow our 4,500lbs 22’ travel trailer with ease and safety, with plenty of power and economy all around the East Coast from Bar Harbor ME to Key West Fl! Try that with what you call the number one you call Ridgeline?

Okie Rider mostly price, plus I’m totally satisfied with the mileage I’m getting. The only advantage a diesel has, like in my cousins Colorado almost like mine, is when we tow identical Travel Trailers on Camping Trips together, from what I can tell while we switched for a while one time, is how the diesel will lug at lower rpm before downshifting. But that’s the only difference and the more than extra hp in the V6 will always overcome that one advantage. There is at no time the diesel ever made it to the top of any hill under any circumstances! Slower but steady as always with stock diesels, along with better mileage. But in a side by side empty run? The gas will always leave the diesel in the dust! Between these two. I would love to see GM make that new 2.7 turbo four they have in the new Silverado available in the Colorado. I’ve driven diesel trucks all my life. Now that I’m retired? No way!

There’s another good reason why you should put the Ranger low in your rankings. The reason is because in Australia, many Rangers’ engines have overheated and sometimes have even exploded, causing many deaths. I don’t know why their was any good reason to then bring this truck into the USA.

I researched all of these trucks and decided on the Ranger. I agree with the criticism of the swaying ride quality. Almost feels like your on a boat going slightly up and down. Other than that I love the truck. The performance has been great. To me the Ridgeline and Gladiator are very unique categories that didn't really fit my needs. The Frontier is too dated. GM quality scares me after a bad experience. It came down to the Taco and Ranger. Neither is perfect, but both are great trucks.

It’s a really good vehicle, and I don’t blame anyone for buying one if it fits your needs. But as you said, let the numbers speak for themselves; if you want a “truck” that can tow and handle itself off-road...the Honda isn’t for you. It’s almost a different category of vehicle. The reason it’s so comfortable and able to have some of the features it does is because the entire car is a compromise. It throws away truck capability to be more user friendly on pavement. So enjoy it, drive and be happy! But pretending it’s just as much of a “truck” as the others here is what annoys people. It’s a unibody SUV with a bed, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

pcosta816 It’s a Truck, just like all the other vehicles being reviewed by these 2 guys. Yes, the 2 trucks that blew out their shocks going down a dirt road we’re trucks too. ( Not good trucks) And the ones that you have to shoe horn an adult man to get him into the back seat - (I’m not going to set back there) yes, they are trucks too. As for the Tacoma, it’s a truck - slow, loud, and very uncomfortable with LESS load carrying ability than a Ridgeline - but it can tow more, which is a good thing because there’s no place to put much inside it. The HONDA has tons of storage and a tailgate that opens 2 ways...which the full side trucks are now implementing. The HONDA has full time all wheel drive which is a lot safer for everyone in the truck - especially in the rain. If you are involved in a collision, the unibody is safer for me and my family. So, - you can climb over big rocks - great! It’s better to avoid them...And tow a bit more in your truck - (if your shocks are not blown), and you do not need to bring much, like a couple more adults. Ridgeline ! It’s a truck and a damn good one. That’s why they rated it the #1 midsize TRUCK

Tom Cogar Took that a little personally didn’t you? I’m glad you like your ridgeline bud. I really am. Already said it’s a good vehicle. Fact is it’s built completely differently than all the other vehicles that they are comparing it to, and not like a traditional truck. So why are we comparing apples to oranges? If that’s the kind of vehicle you want power to you. I couldn’t get one. I have a dunes sticker for the beach where I live and the ridge line wouldn’t even be eligible to pass the inspection because it doesn’t come with a full size spare.

Remember this is an unbiased revision based on various parameters, most people who buy a truck don’t carry a lot of heavy stuff and maybe don’t haul anything but their butts. That’s why the Ridgeline is a logical choice and I understand that rating plus its has some stuff that no other of the other trucks have. Besides, your buying decisions will be based on what your need, what you like, and what you can afford. I’m a diehard Tacoma fan but for what I need I would definitely buy a Ridgeline.

Off-road ability is important. No low range or even manual shift mode. And the Ridgeline bed doesn’t even have bed rails. Good engine. But the timing belt bothers me. Should be a chain. After 3 years of being a Ridgeline owner I now own a 2019 Tacoma since July and I don't miss the RL. Yes the RL drives nice and the awd is awesome but the transmission overheated on me towing my lightweight low profile trailer multiple times. Having to do a full transmission service every 15-20,000 can't be normal. The vcm was an issue. Duel action tailgate is nice but eventually the wirering harness gets tweecked and then the rear camera doesn't work. Leather and paint are way to thin and the hood flutters around way to much regardless that there is a tsb on it. And drive the RL with some side wind , the side windows actually seem to move and listen to the wonderful whistle , so no going down the highway is not quite. Oh, and don't forget to grease those window tracks every 2-3 months or one will notice the windows operating very poorly and you can burn up the window regulator. I know it is hard when one is comparing trucks side by side not to lean towards the RL but Honda does a bunch of suger coating to the truck. It feels nice when new but live with it for a while .

I bought a Frontier SV in 2016. To me, the most important purchase criteria is reliability. Frontier is old for sure, but it is probably the most relliable. It is certainly the less fuel efficient, but for somebody like me who make 10 000 Km / yr, it's really not a big deal. I am not ready to pay $10 K more just to have the new Takoma!!!! Now I am waiting for the new Frontier..... I saw some picture and it could be a great truck. Hoping that price will stay low. And nobody talk about interest rate. When i bought in 2016. The toyota rate was 6%, nissan was 1.5%. I am in Canada, i do not know for U.S. So 10 K + interest rate + taxes make a huge difference......

BULL How comes the Ford Ranger was selected one of the finalist for 2020 Truck of the year together with Ram and Gladiator and the Tacoma was not. Bias review..

So you understand midsize trucks are supposed to meet demand for towing/hauling, and price point. Ridgeline #1? A car with a bed installed, Jeep #2 cost as much or more than a full size truck. Yes, you lost credibility.

I would think that for those who are looking for a “mans” serious work truck, demanding it have body on frame and a large towing capacity, would bypass all of these mid-sized ones and get a “real man’s” truck.....a full sized truck. “Too expensive” you say or “I don’t need to tow 10,000 lbs.” or “need a payload of 1,000 lbs.”. How different is your argument from those who argue of having no need for off-road capability? or a 7,000 lb. tow rating? or wanting a great infotainment system? much less a need for a body on frame? In the grand scheme of things we purchase what we purchase for a varying number of reasons. There are those individuals out there who buy according to their needs only. Then there are those who purchase to compensate for whatever they feel they lack. Whatever floats your boat. The criteria edmund’s uses in ranking these trucks covers more than just off-road capability or towing capacity. Each criteria is a reasonable representation of factors people might take into consideration when evaluating their purchase. Whether truck, car or scooter, people buy what they want to for varied reasons. No need for the testosterone fueled “pissing contest”. Most don’t give a shit.

Yes; everyone's needs differ, and it's as if these trucks might all be pretty good, but each appeals to certain demographics. Got a new Colorado a month ago and couldn't be happier. We don't all want off-road capability, even though we do want 4wd (weather). We don't all want a club cab (hard to believe based on what's on dealers' lots) but some of us do actually want six foot beds (not five) 'cause we actually want to haul stuff instead of just pulling boats. So yeah, the six foot bed, 4x4, with V6 and extended cab works out great for me ... but not everybody. Nice that Chevy gave me that choice. It's a truck, not a car or SUV, and I love it.

Try going to the DMV and convincing them that a Ridgeline is not a truck. Or drive around town in a Ridgeline without truck plates and see how long you can go without getting pulled over. The government says its a truck, so its a truck.

I have also watched a video from TFLTRUCK. They had a test of off road in Colorado, with different types of brands of trucks. Mainly the big 3. ( Domestic) going up a trail of hard packed snow. The Ridgeline was done in no time. Stuck.! But at least they could get the shovel out of the low side bed easily.! Pathetic.! If I had the expendable $ for a nice off road capability toy truck. I'd buy a Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. Not for the towing, not for the cargo bed lbs. But just for the FUN capabilities it can do off road. And do it even with some add ons a helluva lot cheaper than a Ford Raptor . But still able to keep my head held high. The Raptor is one helluva truck.! And I'm a Chevy guy.!

Just wait, when ford actually makes a new American ranger, the new frontier comes out, and a new Tacoma comes out, your biased opinions will change. The way y’all talk Jeep and Chevy and Honda have bought y’all out. And you only put the Tacoma up there because of its legendary quality. Out of these, the frontier fr is the Best Buy. It’s the cheapest and the most reliable. Outdated but the best. The new ranger isn’t new it’s outdated too but still a good truck. And of course the Tacoma is great. The Tacoma, Ranger and frontier should be the top 3.

The Chevy Zr2 is far more capable off road than you guys are admitting! And is way more comfortable to be off road than the taco (no offence taco you are the bomb) but I've watched private non biast videos comparing them and the taco has honestly struggled while the Zr2 with the front locker just made it look way too easy. And higher sides on the bed are a plus for people who actually haul stuff in the back. The Zr2 is purpose built just like the taco, the Zr2 aims for better comfort on and off road and better high speed offroading and it does just that. I can't believe the Honda truck is #1 lol it technically is not a truck.... But I guess the idea of what a truck is, is changing 🤣
