Best Medical Specialities Ranked by a Medical Student (Tier List)

Hey guys! In this video, I'm going to take you through my preferences in terms of specialities as a 4th-year medical student. I will talk you through my opinions and reasoning and what I find appealing or not so appealing about each one. I want to remind you that this reflects my current choices, however, I am open to change. This is after all an opinion about the right fit and each speciality has its merits and challenges.

I’m also a medical student, our interests seem to overlap quite a bit. Here are my thoughts: GP - variation, able to work outside of the hospital. However you have to let go of the most interesting patients… A tier. Surgery - surgery is cool and general surgery can also have a bit of internal medicine issues in the wards. Not my cup of tea though as I hate the OR. D tier for me personally, but I can easily see how it would be S tier for somebody else. Psychiatry - interesting and open-ended, but the wards seem a bit grim… B tier. Cardiology - Did not enjoy my cardiology rotation all that much. Troponin, EKGs consults and infarctions. C tier. Neurology - the interesting cases and clinical examination is S tier. However, stroke consults and neuroanatomy pathways are not my thing. A tier though, it’s cool. Gastro - ”Poop journals”, scoping and IM rota. C tier. Rheumatology - antibodies everywhere. Intellectually stimulating. I am not super keen on MSK issues, but overall I give this an S tier. Oncology - my favorite. Seems quite draining though in a very particular way, which can wear you down over time. S tier for me because of the science, pathology and getting to form close relationships. Paediatrics - was pleasantly surprised by this rotation. Children are fun and they recover from their illnesses. Lots of variation, but demanding. A tier. Ob/Gyn - very cool pathology, but the work environment was not for me. D tier. Emergency - it’s like primary care but people crash. Pretty neat specialty and ER folks can handle so much. But I would not stand a career of this work. D tier. Ortho - I don’t have the right spatial mindset for this. Very practical and hands-on. D tier. Radiology - I think if I would just sit by a computer and not see patients, then I might as well be an engineer. But you can work from home or even abroad, that’s amazing. Very important team player position. High B rank. Anes - Really not for me. I hate the OR, but anes don’t even get to cut. D tier, would not enjoy this.

@@shivaanbahlmed It was fun to write! But it’s important to remember that it’s really subjective. I have a strong bias against anything that is procedure heavy, others would be the exact opposite. Let me just add that even though i’m not a surgery guy, hand surgery is an absolutely beautiful surgical specialty. Very appealing.
