Nice Asics (Novablas 4, Magic Speed 3, Superblast), Saucony (Ride 17, Endorphin Speed 3 & 4, Pro 3, Triumph 21), Adidas (Boston 12), and Puma (Velocity Nitro 3)
I used the more v4 for my first marathon. So glad I did they felt great all the way. I ran a 3:34:33 not the fastest but great for my first. Super satisfying passing people with vaperfly and alphaflys 😂
Much appreciated video. Plenty of options to choose from for a soon to be first time marathon finisher.
Excellent video and breakdown of every category.
Great video! Getting my Hoka Cielo X1s this weekend
Quality video. I do hope this is the start of a mini series doing the same thing for HM/10k/5k!
This video has been super helpful as I’m running my first ever marathon in April. I’m training in Saucony ride 16 and looking at the 17 especially with the 8mm drop
Another superb video. Thanks!
So many good options. It comes down to personale preferencer in the end. I have run marathons in Alphafly, Vaporfly and Saucony Pro 3, but my favourite at the moment is good old Adios Pro 3. The upper is tricky but i love the natural ride that still offers a lot of bounce
Alphafly 3 for me as the race shoe, just discovered the Asics Superblast and that would be the shoe I would use for the vast majority of my training. They are, in my opinion, the best two shoes for marathon racing and training that you can buy today, along with the Hoka Rocket X2 for the shorter stuff!
Had to laugh when Tom started with the 1080 as his pick!! I was imagining him dying a bit inside, not talking about the MoreV4 first instead (my favorite too!). I’m glad you got to still call it out a bit later!! (Thanks for the great content!!)
The AlphaFly is my racer of choice...but if I was forced to run a marathon in the Novablast, I could do it without issue and still run a good race for me. I'd caution first time marathoners from looking at shoes with lower level drops (6mm and lower), since you will feel that drop in the last 10km. So if you don't have strong calves...it can turn into a sufferfest.

@@FlyySlyyGreenLower level drop shoes naturally make you engage your calves more. Which is fine if you are an experienced runner running tons of volume and know you can handle engaging your calves this much over a marathon. But if not, going with 8mm or higher is a much safer bet. I wore 12mm drop in my 1st marathon. I wore 4mm in my 2nd marathon and even though I managed a respectable 3:30hr the last 5k was brutal on the calves. I ran my 3rd marathon in 8mm and it was a non-issue.
Route/sentier : Hoka challenger 7 + Brooks Caldera (plus cool, amorti) + Craft endurance trail (rapides) - Vitesse, carbone : 1: Puma fast R nitro elite - 2: saucony endorphin pro 3 - Puma deviate nitro FM. Trail : Brooks Caldera - Craft endurance trail (mais moins accrocheuses que les Caldera, mais + rapides malgré leur poids)
Very nice and helpful video. Very well done. Surprised not to have found Nimbus26 mentioned at all.. at the end of the day for a full marathon I’d expect them being “better” than the Novablast and/or NewBalance V13.
I'm training for my very first Marathon in Manchester so this video has been really helpful with lots of useful information. Thanks for sharing and good luck for everyone who's also training for a Spring Marathon 😊

A little surprised there was no mention of the Adidas Adios Pro 3. A very popular marathon racer, tried and tested and of course it's obtainable at very reasonable prices if you search around.

Good shoe! Couldn't cover every carbon option, but as mentioned in the vid there are many great picks that might work well for people, the ones covered are our top choices.
Just bought Asics Nimbus 26 for preparation to marathon, it's a bit pricey but the comfort is superb. I can run for straight 1 hour without hurting my feet and brisk walk for 15 mins the comfort is so relaxing and another 1 hour straight running.❤
Great video very useful
I’ve had the saucony triumph20 and ran 2 half marathons in them. Very comfy, protects your legs and feet throughout the run. Not the best shoe for speed though, but it’s fine. I say it’s the best shoe so far, in terms of comfort. Been testing out in running stores for other shoes that offer the same comfort. Saucony may be on the pricy, but it’s worth it, plus they go on sale too. 😊 Now, I am thinking of running a full marathon… unemployed now so just want to make my time productive, plus running makes me happy! 😊
Love these vids! What made you decide against including the On CloudEclipse? Would this be considered a good marathon comfy shoe? Thanks x
Hi Guys Great reviews as always, thank you. About to do the Comrades Up run 90km road Ultra. Heel striker looking to do it in sub 9hrs so 6min/km. Currently looking at Endorphin Pro 3, Speed 3 or 4 and the ASICS Superblast. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.
Have ran all my marathons in the alphafly v1. Really wanted to run Boston in the AF3 but Nike is making impossible for runners to get a pair in time so considering changing brands for the first time, or just run in my old AF1 which have around 200kms on them. This videos is just what I needed to start thinking about a plan B. If only Nike made it easy for us to give them our money 🙃
The other CRITICAL thing that runners need to consider for their marathon shoe is lockdown. If the shoe makes you slide and move around or heel lifts at all, you are in for a BAD day. Doing a long run effort where you run similar elevation changes as your race course and doing some pace changes from long run pace to goal race pace should make any potential lockdown issues known and give you time to try and resolve it, or pick a better shoe (for you!).

This is a good point. Shoe lockdown is important if you’re running long distance races.
23:17 “it’s not overly squishy and unstable.” Might be unpopular, but that was exactly my opposite experience with the Endorphin Speed 4. Very mushy, and wobbly. I bounced around after between Metaspeed Edge Paris, and NB MoreV4. Currently maining the MoreV4 for most of my training.
If you could guide me where I could find the Saucony ENDORPHIN SPEED 3 in the sale in a size 9 that would be greatly appreciated seems to be sold out everywhere
My second choice might be the Alfafly. First choice would be the Adidas EVO 1.
Great video I'm running my first marathon this year, my main goal is to get round the course, I bought some puma forever run nitro for training but do you think they will be okay to run the marathon in? Thanks in advance 👍
I ran the Cambridge HM on Sunday. I had time to look at shoes as I went round. I would estimate that 90% of people who finished around me (1:22) were in vaporfly 2s and 3s.
For “Best training and racing” I would not recommend Magicspeed 3. I have both Superblast and Magic Speed 3 and they are both excellent, but Magic speed is only for faster pace. In slow pace is very stiff and unpleasant, due to carbon plate and low stack. I can more easily see Superblast as fast pace shoe than Magic Speed long distance. PS. They are both very beautiful!

Superblast for long/ daily and Magic Speed 3 for workout( intervals, tempo up to 21k) Speed 3 is for speed only not considered super trainer that can do it all shoe.
Non plated brooks Hyperion Max no doubt.
Does anyone have any advice on using the Hoka Mach X?
Would you recommend a specific pair of shoes for Boston Marathon? Thinking specifically about the hills in Boston, up hill and downhill, which shoe would be most suitable? My options are Alphafly1 or Vaporfly2. Slightly favouring the AF1 bcos of the additional cushioning for the last 10k downhill.
Hi ! a quick question regarding the NB 1080 v13..... does the upper expend a bit lenghtwise ? I’ve purchased these in my regular size for my first marathon, but my big toe is close to the end on my left foot (which is quite longer than my right one). I’ve just done a quick test and I could feel my big toe slightly touching the end of the toebox when I ran, I was wondering if it does extend a bit with time.I have very narrow foot so I think it wouldn’t be a good option to go up half a size. let me know if you think this could work or if you think these could be too short for Marathon distance :)
Picked up the Saucony Triumph 21 for $99 USD today! Getting back into running and the Nike Pegasus 40 and Nike Structure 25 have done well for me on my short runs (2-5 miles) but I wear them for everything and I've been looking for an opportunity to pick up some shoes for longer runs during my half marathon training. Partially because I don't want to keep wearing out my daily wear shoes. Usually not thrilled by Prime Day deals and other shops were also selling for $95-99ish but Amazon was the only one with a decent stock of various sizes and styles. The Saucony site had the best deal but were sold out of all but one size and REI was selling for $95 but only one style and also not available in my size.
Hi what’s your thoughts on the on Cloud eclipse for a marathon shoe.
this was good
Why no mention of the ASICS gel Nimbus 26 as a cushioned and comfortable option like the included 1080?
I can't belive you didn't include NB SC trainer v2 in the last category. Easly the best shoe for training and racing by a MILE.
Will there be a similar best 5k/10k shoe video?
@TheRunTesters

We have a 5K shoes round-up planned yep
Nice
Actually the alphafly 3 with its air zoom is a game changer, cannot find other shoes with similar extra oomph
Curious that neither the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 3 nor the Saucony Endorphin Elite made the best carbon-plated racing shoes list; especially the Adios Pro 3 which as graced numerous podiums. Also, I don't know about the NB FF More v4 for marathons. It's a brick, and I can barely do 8 easy miles before my legs are fatigued.
will be running my first ultra 50km next month. what pair of shoes would you recommend?
Just bought the superblast for $316 🇨🇦 credits. What is wrong with me??? Also they looks siiiiick. I wouldn't dream of using the velocity 2 for the marathon, my toes start to throb past 6km or so.
Does Asics Metaspeed have a wide toebox
What about Prime X Strung 2 for non competitive runners, would you still place it in the Carbon category if fit was legal?
i would say the velocity nitro 3 should not be in this, its way to firm of a ride imo. i think a shoe that is missing here is the Kinvara Pro.
What about the Adidas Adios Pro 3? Has that now been overtaken in recent years?

Good shoe! Loads of great carbon shoes out there at a similar level, so to cover all of them would have been hard, the ones mentioned are our top picks but as mentioned in the vid there are many great carbon options that might suit people even better.
Where does Puma DN2 fit?
What’s your best suggestion for wider feet? I have my Ironman in Oct and curious on your thoughts.
Swap out the laces on the Boston 12s and you have a perfect shoe!!

I am 24. I am a beginner. I want to train for and attempt a marathon in September. Should i buy a training shoe now and later a good marathon shoe? If so what should i go for?
No adidas pro 3 very suprised and thought the puma devaite nitro 2 would get a mention seeing as you can get it for sale pretty much everywhere and its pretty dam good

Yes, all things considered - performance, durability, value, etc. - the adidas adios pro 3 are the best marathon shoes for most people, and the puma deviate nitro 2 the best 'super trainer'.
I got my BQ in the the Hoka Mach 4 last year, and my 10k PB in the Mach 5. Damn ugly shoes, but love 'em!
Gentleman, whats is your thoughts about running a marathon wearing a NB more V4? I am about 90kg, I am not looking for a PB. Thanks in advance

Very useful😊 I wish you would have women testing these shoes too. Especially since women are lighter. There must be differences between an 80 kg person and someone at 50 kg. Any thoughts?
Hoka Mach 6 or Adidas Boston 12?
What about the Tempus?
Alphafly 3 has been show to be terrible in terms of efficiency vs. Alphafly 1.
Mach 6 super narrow damn watch it out better fined wider version of if.
I wish i could find the endorphin pro 3 on sale as it’s my personal fave. Anyone know where you can still get it in 9.5 men’s?

Hola Cielo x1
Most are out of stock 😂
The Puma Velocity Nitro 2 are poorly made shoes. They used low quality materials, which causes the shoe to lose its structure after a few kilometers. The laces don't look like they're from a shoe designed for running, and the tongue gets out of place. There is a very big difference in construction with the deviate nitro 2, they are very similar, but with enormous differences. I think all brands do the same with their models to reduce the cost as much as possible.
SUPERBLAST is THE BEST. G.O.A.T.
