The second generation Volvo S80 is often forgotten when discussing affordable second hand luxury vehicles. Today, we discuss why the S80 is not only worthy of mention when compared to 5 Series BMW and Audi A6, but why it may even be the more luxurious choice.

It’s a shame I had to scroll past all those dealer videos to see this because this is by far the best review out there for this car. You might’ve just convinced me to get it
I own S80 like this only 2.4 D5. Agree on every word, comfortable, reliable ride, especially on long distances. Driving this car you don't feel the need for racing or competition with others, just smooth ride.
Just a few days ago, I picked up an 08 T6 including climate package and Dynaudio with 105k on the clock for $4500. Man, I won't shut up about it. It's truly an awesome car. It's comfy, it's smooth but let me tell you - compared to a bimmer, this thing might not be fast - but compared to most mid-range domestic or Japanese cars, you'll be surprised. When I took it out for a test drive I floored it, not knowing what the engine was capable of, and it put me in the back of my seat. If anyone is on the fence at all about owning one of these, I hope this video helps. It's a superb vehicle. Great video!

Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying your T6. Also, like I said in the video, even compared to a BMW it’s quick; it barely got left by my 2011 335i on the highway. I was impressed and little upset haha!

For real!!!!
I was shocked to find a review of this car in the first place - there are hardly any review videos (not dealership info videos) about not only the S80, but the 2009 T6! The quality then far surpassed my expectations, and I couldn't believe it was uploaded only a week ago! Aside from my experiences driving a 2009 T6, I haven't really seen any other perspectives on the car, especially not in 2019. I think it is a superb car, and am quite surprised it has depreciated so quickly. I've got to say, despite the engine being more tuned to luxury and comfort than sportiness, the car has some real power when you floor it. Also, the Dynaudio speaker package is awesome - I'd be impressed to find a more rich set of speakers. The car was WAY ahead of its time, with features like adaptive cruise control, BLIS, auto brake, and Bluetooth connectivity - features that many are impressed to find in cars in 2019! Despite not being built for sportiness, I think this car offers a great overall package in both luxury and sportiness fields with a 2019 feel to it. The only thing I would have liked is for the looks to be a bit less bland - it doesn't have a "face" as many cars do nowadays. Thanks for making this video - it's what I'd been (unknowingly) waiting for since 2009! (And yes, I liked, commented, and subscribed)

Yes, the S80 is a fantastic car to drive. I've owned two, a 2.8 twin-turbo and an Executive Edition. Just be warned that they are extremely unreliable and have a very poor reputation for their automatic transmissions. Which is a shame, considering almost all other models of Volvo are of excellent build quality and run forever with little need for repair. I currently own five Volvos ranging from the V70 Cross Country, S60 and a pumped-up C30 T5 R-Design. Every S80 I've ever owned in the past has experienced every single one of the common (and expensive) failures you can easily Google... Take it from an experienced Volvo owner, don't buy one. Get and S60 T5 if you want a decent performance sedan. Preferably one with the manual transmission.

I've had my 2011 S80 T6 for several years, driven cross country, used as a commuter car too, and have only experienced minor problems with the car. Everything he mentioned in the video is accurate. The only issue's I've encountered were engine coil/ spark plug replacement, and having to replace the pcv oil trap and air mass filter. I bought it used with 140k miles on it, it was previously a company car, so it had some wear on the leather seats, but everything still functions great. I'm super happy with my purchase, after owning a bunch of different cars like Jeep Liberty, a GMC Jimmy (lol), Ford Focus, 2 Honda Civic's, Ford Ranger, Volvo C30, this is the best car I've ever owned. I would just suggest bringing any car you might be interested in purchasing to your mechanic to look over everything before buying to avoid surprises.

i have the 07mod 185hp diesel. and it has been very reliable. had it for several years now, not one single issue with it.
When I was searching for my first car back in 2016 my 2009 S80 3.2 beat out the SIlverados, F150s and other large trucks I originally wanted. I got mine for $4,000 with only 162k miles on it. It's currently sitting at 211k miles and counting. The motor went out earlier this year and I love it so much I put the $2,000 to get it back on the road. I'd put a lot of nice upgrades on it from newer S80s as well as a mild exhaust due to the original being rusty. There's so many little things you can add that refreshes it into 2020 and still look modern parked around other newer cars. I love it, I've taken it all over.

Excellent review! As a 2012 S80 owner, this car has been incredibly reliable and really isn’t that expensive to maintain. Cheaper to maintain than its German rivals. This is the choice if you want to stand out from the crowd. Downsides are that it has poor resale value and extremely difficult to resale. Buying and owning one is a long term commitment. I tried so hard to get rid of it and I failed. I decided to keep driving mine till the wheels fall off.

SUPERB review!! Extremely professional and professionally (actually, beautifully) recorded (filmed). Wherever you filmed this, the area was gorgeous as was the backdrop, wow! I absolutely LOVE my first generation 1999 S80 as it's the most luxurious car that I've owned to date and with the exceptions of Porsche and Opel, I've owned everything Germany has offered since 1982 (one BMW, two Mercedes-Benz, three Volkswagens, and three Audi's) and I'm done. I'm now on my third Saab and my second Volvo (the S80) and have found that the Swedish cars are more reliable and are grossly understated. My desire is to get a 2009 S80 so thanks for this superb video! Where was this shot?

Great review man. Bit of a unicorn car this one. I particular liked it when the v8 Supercars here in Australia raced them for a few seasons.
I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation of the Volvo S80 v6 turbo.... I’m a 1990s Volvo 960 kind of guy and when they changed body styles to the S80 in 2001 I hated it, couple that with Ford’s meddling esp. that horrible transmission...they lost me. Over the years the body style grew on me...(sorta) you sir have convinced me to take a second look at the later 2000s S80. Thank you for such a well done overview..🤔😊

I have a S40 and it's a great ride. The 1.9 turbo is fun too :)
Own a 2009 s80 3.2. Love the thing! I’ve owned Bmw before Volvo. The drive compared to my e70 x5 is equivalent or a bit better (despiting that my x5 has the upgraded better seats “multi contour 20 way adjustable”. Astonishing I couldn’t believe the comfort the s80 has the drive. Best of all it’s pretty powerful too! I got into s80s because my neighbor put a for sale sign on her s80 when she got a new car. Funny I used to see it every time I just to drive by and said “that’s a really nice car because it has the 17” regor wheels that pairs beautiful with the car. But never looked into it because I already owned a car and really didn’t know much about Volvo models. But when I did see the for sale sign I stopped to look at it and perhaps strike a good deal on it (which I did) To have as a daily and keep the BMW garaged to not use it as a daily (not very reliable and very costly to fix the BMW) that way I’m not wearing it out as much lol. But anyways it’s an ice white exterior and blonde interior. To me it’s luxurious and sporty (just a little customization and you will have the sport to it 😉. Im surprised the s80 didn’t have a better market. I think as he quoted in the video the Germans have taken over the market which is true I had my BMW first before Volvo. But I bought it because she lived on the same street which caught my eye. Love it daily driver perfect and stylish. And best of all it only has 79k on it when I got it. Perfect! Lol
I have owned 4 Volvo S80s... Even compared with modern cars they are so smooth and comfortable Best car that i ever owned
I own an 08 s80 and I fell in love with them I stand by them 100% mingled with ford yes but so much of it is volvo...... The T6 and the v8 s80s have different suspension setups then the lower engines....... The T6 and v8s are pure luxury 👌
I picked up a late 2004 S60 2.4 D5 last week. It cost me £700. And it doesn't appear to have much wrong with it. I've owned many cars over the years, and this drives the best. It's fast when I need it to be (that big 5 cylinder diesel engine really kicks when the turbo comes on), but as you say in the video, I don't want to drive it fast. I just like cruising in it.
Nice video... Superb car!
Spot on review. I have an S80 V8 (63,000kms). Smooth, luxurious, quiet, very safe and with the most comfortable seats of any car I've driven. Recently drove from Melbourne to Sydney - it's the ultimate GT sedan - and the sound of the Yamaha V8 is awesome even with stock exhaust. This is a massively underated car.

Fantastic review! Definitely considering this as my next car after watching your review! I know that this review is more focused towards Volvo S80 being a German alternative but I'm curious to know at the 6k price point in the used car market how well does the S80 compare to the Japenese and South Korean flagship competition of it's era. Like for eg. '00-'06 Lexus LS 430 or the GS 430 or the ES300/350 and the first Gen '08-'13 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 V8 or the 3.8 V6 in terms of ride comfort and reliability? Perhaps, a future video on this?

Lexus and Genesis have more plush rides. S80 is softish for a European car, but it isn't as plush and isolated as the Genesis or Lexus and it's not as quiet. It does have a "stouter" feel, however.
Basically what I've been saying for 15+ years. People put too much attention amd focus on sportyness, is it planted enough around bends? Is the steering responsive enough? Is the gearbox quick enough? Is the acceleration punchy enough to overtake 3 cars fast as it takes to overtake one car normally? It's like no matter the class it's judge based of a sporty GT and I don't get it. Judge it for what it is and compare it to it's equals. Ans as a reviewer talk about to to the people who look for what it offers or it's competitors. But it's always like the main group is track enhtusiasts and teens who just got their license and wants to have fun on any trip, to the mall, to their visits, to their jobs. Finally someone who get it!
Nice review. Miss my 4.4 V8.

I gave it to a friend's son two years ago. It's his car now and he's been very happy (and safe) with it since.
I bought my S80 as my first car almost two years ago. While I’ve spent a lot of money replacing the driveshaft, AWD pump, water pump, wheel bearing, brakes/rotors, rear bushings, belts/pullys, PCV, vacuum booster, downpipe, etc. It’s been an amazing car to drive. The seats are by far the most comfortable I’ve ever ridden in… I would have no problem driving for 15+ hours straight in them. The performance audio is AMAZING, and pretty much everything else on the car was reviewed perfectly. (Although I do find myself wanting to drive fast sometimes lol). Next up are rear wheel spacers, ECU tune, new intake, new windshield, right front boot, and repainting the bumper (but we’ll see how much Im able to do because I’m in college atm). Such a great car, but PLEASE have a mechanic look at it (unless you are one), just as is the case with any used car. Don’t want to run into the same problems I have had. I purchased with 130k and have 155k miles now. I don’t know if I could ever sell my s80 (although I do want one with a Yamaha V8 :))

What year is ur S80? Are these problems common?
What's the reliability/maintenance like? This would be a nice topic to cover in future videos. Liked the video.

Well done on the review! Hey! Have you ever checked out a V8 model? I would love see a video on that! There are not many out there.

Almost bought one a few months back! It was a 2009 V8 Executive (the one with the champagne glasses and fridge in the back lol). Loved it. Everything that’s good about the T6 but with a (surprisingly audible) V8 rumble and power. Didn’t go home with it because cosmetically it wasn’t a great example.

@@BuzzytheBlue You could probable pick up an older more base 2007 for quite a bit cheaper. If you do, be sure and post a video on it ;)
The s80 II was so ahead of its time in terms of modern looks and tech, that they basically ran the same design with minor tweaks up until 2016 thats how long it took the competition to catch up. Both generations s80 made volvo what it is today .It is also a plus for me personally because I drive the V8 version which will never happen again with volvo unfortunately. Nonetheless enjoy your s80's the swedes surprised me I can say the least.
Nice editing

Thank you, Aidan 👍🏼
I have driven both the 6 and the 8 speed transmissions and i must say i prefer the 6 speed. The 8 speed box feels restless and downshifts very agressively already at half throttle (i guess this was emission thing since the car had the new D4 twinturbo diesel engine). It got better when ECO+ setting was engaged since it didn't downshift as quicly. Also not being dual clutch the 8 speed feels quite jerky when it downshifts twice in a row. The 6 speed box is much more oldschool and thus better to drive.
i have a Volvo S80 T6 with 210k miles and every mile is worth it for a wonderful smooth ride.
