That was a great tip about using the tester with a blow dryer to see what kind of voltage drop a load produces at the receptacle. I recently ran power to my shed, about 40 feet from the house, and wondered how much of a drop I would get with a load more than the usual light bulb. Took the blow dryer and tester out to the shed and voltage dropped from 120 to 110 under blow dryer load. A bit more than one would like I suppose; I think in terms of 5% being a max drop. But I don't have any sensitive electronics in my shed, so I think I will be fine. I ran No. 12 wire. At the time, I looked at voltage drop tables and thought a No.10 or 8 might be better. But not being an electrician, I stayed with the No. 12 which is hard enough to work with for me. At least now I know, thanks to your video. Great job!

Thanks for the reviews. I just bought the Klein, actually two of them, and I am glad I did. I enjoyed seeing the comparisons. I saw the larger one on Amazon but I am not happy with the lack of different color LED’s as well as it’s size. Even though the size is not a big issue.

Thanks for taking time to do this. Generally have used Fluke for testers, Klein and Knipex for hand tools. Busted my plug in tester, now I will get the Klein. It's a lot of tester for the money. If you have the time and money to purchase or review the Knipex self adjusting pliers, and their wrench pliers, I believe they are indispensable.

The Klein tester is my favorite receptacle tester and a steal at ~$21. My only wish, like with all the basic receptacle testers, is that it had recessed holes to access the 3 connections so you could probe them with a meter. It is handy sometimes to be able to measure neutral voltage (neutral to ground).

you just saved me over $250. I was contemplating the ideal circuit analyzer, but had already ordered the klein RT250 earlier today. guess I will have to pull out a calculator to figure out the percentage drop with the hair dryer, lol. as an owner of an older home with much needed wiring updates, I feel much more confident that I can get the same info from much cheaper tools. also purchased today the Klein Tools 80016 Circuit Breaker Finder Tool and the Extech CB10 to do my own side by side test of which one works better for mapping the circuits to the circuit breaker box.

That Non- contact function on the Klein could save your bacon. It's easy to assume that just because the outlet doesn't work that the circuit isn't hot. I always double check with a non-contact, but sometimes those seem a little hard to trust as well.

I just got this testers few weeks ago, everything is fine with this testers, but I find with 2 situations that it couldn't test properly. 1. If the receptacle has no ground at the same time hot/neutral wires are reversed, the tester only detect as open ground. 2. If you test it on the outlet has no ground and a power bar with EMI filter plugged in, no matter where you test (on the 2nd outlet or on the power bar itself) it will always show hot/natural reversed, but once unplugged the power bar with EMI filter, it will change the reading to open ground.

Question: If I need to know if there is no power on an receptacle/outlet before replacing it; if I leave this tester plug and then go to braker box and turn off braker and walk back to check outlet, will this tester will be 100% off to tell me there is no power or will stay on all the time because uses batteries? And making it useless for that purpose? Please advise.

I only use the boom box when finding which breaker goes to which outlet when I am upgrading old, bad, or missing breaker labeling when I am alone and as a back up to my circuit tracer. Early in my apprenticeship I was helping on a remodel. The journeyman was checking all the circuit hots with his tic tracer, and missed the fact that a lighting circuit had an open neutral. Had to pull down the completed kitchen ceiling to find an old buried J-box.

Mike Kelly All I can say is the Depot I got mine at had 7 on the peg, and if I look at that store on-line, it now shows 6 since I bought mine. So, some of those stores that show 7 may actually have them somewhere in the store. The store I was in did not have a peg for them, and the peg they were on was for a completely different product. The other stores may be waiting to do it right, and have not made room for them yet. But, they might be sitting on a shelf, waiting for someone to create a peg spot for it.
