Thanks Ricci, very good video. The only critique I have is to add some video of mounting the bracket to the camera and mounting it to a tripod. These are minor, but it would be nice to see in terms of completeness and show definitely how easy it is to attach the bracket.

Glad to see more custom brackets for the Z6 and Z7. For me the brackets that add extra height to the grip are better and I also wonder if this bracket has the issue that many others have where you can't change between FTZ lenses and native lenses without removing the camera from the tripod? Otherwise, looks good for those that don't care about either of these limitations.

Several companies make camera-specific L-brackets, including Kirk, RRS and, as a great, cheaper alternative, Haoge. One thing about the Kirk L-bracket is that newer ones (like for the Z7) have integrated QD connections for sling straps, as well as an integrated hex wrench, which is convenient.

I think that the universal brackets have their place. If you have a lot of different bodies, it might be the better way to go. But on the other hand, some of the brackets made for specific models might give you better access to things like ports because they are made specifically for that camera body and/or series. I should probably look more closely into the Kirk or 3 Legged Thing brackets, as I have one RRS bracket for my Z's (luckily the same bracket works on the gen 1 and gen 2 Z6/Z7 bodies) but I might want to get a second bracket so I can have one on each body and not have to remove the bracket when I want to shoot on a different body, or even if I wanted ot mount both cameras (with different lenses) onto tripods at the same time. The one thing I will say that I love about my RRS L- bracket is it is a two-piece design, so when in the vertical position, I can slide the camera body up and down to allow for the camera to be in the vertical position, but still access the ports on the camera. To me, this is useful and some of the aftermarket cheaper ones are one-piece and this isn't really possible, or you have to buy a special 90 degree adapter, which sometimes doesn't work anyway.

I picked up the darker one for my Z7ii (orange one was a bit too bright for my tastes). So far I like it a lot and it'll do very well for me and fits the camera great and my tripod. The ONLY thing I don't like about the design is that in order to access the main connections (USB-C/HDMI) there isn't enough room to get your finger under the flap to pull the cover open. The only 2 options are to get something to pry it open, or take off the Zelda Also sure would be cool if you could use the PeakDesign Clip 3 without having to add their base plate to the bottom of the Zelda. Overall it's great, works really well and is way easier to have attached and not have to concern yourself with your tripod bracket Great video Ricci! It did help me decide to get mine

Ricci I have both the Z7 & Z6 camera with Kirk L Brackets. I've used Kirk brackets on both my D850 and D810 in the past and they were flawless in use. Where both the Z camera fall flat on their face with the L brackets, is when using a remote shutter release and the only option is to plug it into the side port. It's a no go! Try shooting in the portrait mode and the cord gets crushed between the bracket and the ball head. Nikon left off the 10 and 8 pin socket from the front of the camera (shame on Nikon) and created a huge problem for me. Peter

I've found that shooting in "electronic front-curtain shutter mode" (works up to 1/2000s) combined with exposure delay has made the need for cable release/mirror-up obsolete. Even for exposures longer than 30 seconds where you'd normally use BULB, you can use TIME and just block the light coming into the lens at the last second before you release the shutter. You should give those options a shot.

Looks great, but only issue I can see is that it may be difficult to mount a heavy lens like Sigma 85mm 1.4 Art, so the mount bears all the weight on the tripod. The FTZ adapter has the option to attach a mounting plate to it, will this get in the way of the 3LT plate? Smallrig produce an adapter that has an additional support that threads onto the L plate to take the strain off the mount and onto the L Plate. Bit of a faff, but maybe better than potentially damaging the mount. Worth a look.

I just picked up this bracket for my Z6. The bracket covers the battery charging light next to the camera strap attachment also the cut out in the bracket for the lens release button compromises the ability of some cheaper narrower Arca clamps to securely hold the camera. the camera popped right out of the Arca clamp I am using, kind of scary when you have $4000.00 of camera gear relying on a $100 clamp.. there was no need to make that cut out in the clamp. you could access the lens removal button just fine. I reported this to Three legged thing and they said they have no plans on changing the design. so, take that for what it is worth.

  • @guyyowell8547

Ok, here’s the problem with this bracket: you cannot use the WR-R10 remote with the camera mounted on a tripod in the portrait mode because the bracket only has a single hole. The Kirk L-bracket has a long notch in the base which allows you to slide the bracket. This allows you to use the WR-R10 with the camera mounted in portrait mode.

  • @MSmatt76

I have a Kirk on my Z7 and the Zelda on my Z6. The Kirk is a bit heavier and you need an allen wrench to mount (which you can store in the mount btw). This is something to consider if you need to slide your bracket out for connections then you want the Kirk. I like having both since with the orange Zelda I can easily tell the cameras apart and I don't use the connections in portrait mode on the Z6.

YOu also mentioned the FTZ adapter which I think Nikon needs to release an updated version without the tripod mount socket on it. Perhaps even make it a round adapter that's slightly larger than the diameter of an Z lens. The FTZ Adapter and it's interference with some mount plates is the one reason I sort of hate using it. In some cases , especially if you have a heavier lens and need to use the mount point on the FTZ, makes it hard to remove or install on the camera body at times, usually requiring you to remove the mounting plate first (either on the body or FTZ or both) and then attach/remove the FTZ. If they had a rounded adapter, this would be solved and less of a pain (Nikon, are you listening?) I think the interference problem though is more on the FTZ itself, as the mount point socket is too close to the body. I would have preferred that Nikon maybe made the foot removable, maybe using a design like they have on their 70-200 lenses where the foot can be removed by unscrewing something, or even if they made a mount with a band (like some camera lenses have) that can be loosened using a thumb screw, and then slipped off to remove it). Something like that would have been nice rather than a fixed tripod mount point.

I looked at this Zelda, but after using my Z6 for a short while I went for the SmallRig L bracket (www.smallrig.com/smallrig-l-bracket-for-nikon-z6-and-nikon-z7-camera-2258.html) that is a bit deeper but also provides a depth extension for the grip. No more pinkie slipping under the grip as it is now 16.5mm deeper. It is heavier than the Zelda but you can remove the side part if you don't need it whereas you can't with the Zelda. I also bought the extra FTZ plate and this makes everything really rigid with large F mount lenses fitted. You can also fit other accessories to it if desired and it is beautifully made in every way.

When I first saw this video I thought "what a detailed and well thought out review". Then I ordered the Zelda. It arrived today and I could not be more disappointed. The one purpose of a bracket is to ensure RIGID coupling between the camera and the tripod. The Zelda is anything but rigid. While the base is solid enough, the L arm flexes VISIBLY with very moderate effort. While the bracket may be good for someone vlogging or snapping family group shots in bright daylight, anyone planning on taking a 2 min exposure during blue hour in moderate wind should prepare to be disappointed. Mine is going straight back to Amazon.
