When the characters get reunited, it literally sends shivers across my arm. I can’t but feel attached to these characters. All the banters and the time spent you had from the previous game. To be reunited again feels so cathartic. A feeling you don’t get in any other RPG

You know I've seen a lot of reviews where the reviewer mentioned they couldn't see where a third game could go. I personally never understood this particular issue for one reason, Rean. Without going into detail, the ending of the game left me on the edge of my seat to see what would happen with Rean's character and how he would deal with his personal issues. The conflict between Rean and a....certain someone is definitely big enough to frame a story around and when you factor how incredibly pissed Oruboros must be after the end of Cold Steel 2, Cold Steel 3 will certainly have enough going on to create an engaging narrative.

I was thinking about the story picking up directly after Part 2, like part 2 did for part 1. From where the story left off I don't even now if Rean could have been a playable character for the third entry if they went this way, but yes, There's lots that can be done but it would have to serve as a story arc so different than what was going on in the rest of the game it's hard to imagine they would be continuing in that direction. All present world challenging obstacles have been tackled and wrapped up with a neat bow, Reans "family issues" would be a good direction to explore, and I think more can be covered in regards to Yggdrasil, but as it is there's so little left un-answered in the main plot i just don't see part 3 being a direct continuation of the same narrative. And on that note, it's confirmed I guess that part 3 will take place a year and a half later, so I guess it's not a "Direct" continuation per say. Either way, I'm excited information is finally available about part 3. A lot could happen in that year and a half gap, and I'm sure whatever they work up for a conflict in this one will be pure gold just like the rest.

Oh okay I see what you mean now. I had always assumed they would be doing a time skip of some kind so that they could bring all the characters back together after their personal business was settled. They all needed to get stronger anyway to deal with the coming problems facing the nation, so a time skip just seemed like the most natural course to take in my mind. I suppose they could have done a direct sequel right after the end of the second game, but then we would have to either play as Rean without Class VII, or we'd be playing as a new cast of characters entirely. Both of these options would be incredibly strange. Rean without Class VII would just feel....wrong. Going the other route and having an entirely new cast with a new lead would feel equally off since having someone else other than Rean be the one to deal with....you know who....would be incredibly unsatisfying. I'd be legitimately pissed if we had that HUGE reveal at the end of 2 and then no emotional and dramatic payoff in the sequel. I just couldn't see either of those two options working so my head automatically jumped to the idea of a time skip being the only real option.

  • @TarksGauntlet

My initial thought was that part 3 would take place right after rean get's his plot twist. The game skipped a few months there that literally anything could happen in and they could set up for a direct sequel as they fill in what happened during that time gap, but I'm cool with this 1.5 years later business. Tensions are gonna be high in part 3 I think. Getting some serious star wars ep 6 vibes coming up.

I'm a Trails player who went in since Trails in the Sky. Dove headfirst into the rabbit hole and have no intentions of leaving when I'm already at Trails into Reverie. I had a unique experience in Cold Steel II. Late in the game, there is the Divertisement chapter where you play as Lloyd Bannings from the Crossbell saga. At that point in time, I had not played the Crossbell games as the official English translations had not been out yet. (Hurray for fan patches!) So while I understood the significance of characters like Prince Olivert, or Rickya and Anton, when the camera panned over the Central Square of Crossbell, it basically just washed over me. But then I played Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure. I replayed the Divertisement chapter once more, and my god, my eyes were open. I recognized every single NPC inside the Central Square. The two gossipy girls in front of the Department Store, the little girl with the running gag of getting the meaning of the Special Support Section wrong, Coppe the cat who lived in the SSS building before they did, the Junior SSS that was formed in admiration of Lloyd and the gang's deeds, to the abandoned SSS building itself. The first time I played the chapter, I was basically a foreigner. The city and its people meant nothing to me. But the second time, after spending two games worth of time in there, I knew everything, I knew everyone. I was a Crossbellian seeing invaders in our home. That made Lloyd and the SSS much more meaningful to me. Well done Falcom, for giving me such an experience.

I absolutely adore this series and this game too. I put like 90 hours each into 1 and 2 and beat it at like level 140 which admittedly was too high level, but I had so much fun with this game and these characters. I was once the "COD" guy in your vids, but I collect for Vita and play that more than my console cuz this game series got me into turn based JRPG's. As a kid my first was Final Fantasy X and I beat that again on vita when it came out, But looking back TALES OF COLD STEEL IS BETTER THAN FINAL FANTASY. I will subscribe and its funny after your first review I saw was Akibas beat which I have put 2 hours into each game and am not a big fan of either, and kinda like Beat better.lol To me this is the best game on Vita and only a couple visual novels like SteinsGate and Danganronpa can compete with Tales story. Great Review and it deserves thousands more views. U got a new subscriber and Great presentation in your vid

You know I knock on COD cause it's easy, and while I'm not really an MLG fps player or anything they're still extremely competent and fun games haha. I'd probably side with Cold steel 1 and 2 being the best game on vita, and if they're not the best their at least in the top 5. The danganronpa games are fantastic, but I've not got around to Steins Gate yet. Akiba's beat didn't really drive me nuts until the 10 hour mark. Prior to 10 hours it was just a bit of a janky game, Pinkun and repeating dungeons just gets insufferable after a while. And thanks for all the kind words man. It's appreciated!

On the subject of Trails in the Sky, I also played Cold Steel before Sky and questioned whether Sky could really measure up. I eventually played them for myself and all I can say is they do not in any way disappoint. They are every bit as good as the Cold Steel games. While the combat of Sky isn't quite as refined as Cold Steel, I actually enjoyed the story of Sky even more than the two Cold Steel games thanks to the equally well done world building, lovable cast and the excellently portrayed relationship between the two main leads that I thought far surpassed even the relationship of Rean and Alisa. Also.....a certain Erebonian Prince is a playable character. :) Honestly I'm just as excited for Trails in the Sky 3 at this point as I am for Cold Steel 3. Now if we could just get the two Crossbell games localized....PLEASE XSEED!!!!

I recommend normal to play better in the right timeline, because you get spoiler over the other games (if you focus story). Make much more sence. The Sky game the third set up the Series for all the new games until today. You understand all games without playing these, but i think in my opinion it makes not the full expirience. I read the Series are 60% done(beginn with sky) and the next Game after ToCS3 are in Calvard says the producer. Trails in the Sky play around 3-4 in-game years before the Events of ToCS 1 and Trails of Zero. The Events are in Trails of Cold Steel in Erebonia, and Trails of Zero/AO in Crossbell and play simultan. I´m in Cold Stell 1 now on pc and until chapter 3 it fells for me direct like the Sky game first chapter, it beginn not fast but take enough time for characters/worldbuilding and i look forward what will happen. Also i hope before Cold Stell 2 or at least 3 come out on Pc, i can play the Crossbell Games too.

Wholeheartedly agree that this (esp. if you include Trails in the Sky) is the best ever continuing JRPG series - at least the best one I’ve played. The only story I can think of that comes close is Xenogears, but the scope of the world-building isn’t anywhere near being on this level. Instead, I end up thinking of stuff like War and Peace, Atlas Shrugged, and Game of Thrones as parallels. If anyone can think of a JRPG that tops Trails in this regard, I want to know about it. (Am playing Persona 4 at the moment---interested to see how that compares, given some of the similar relationship mechanics.)

This is what got me into the Trails/Kiseki franchise. It's right up there with Xenogears for me. I even went through and played the Crossbell games and those are also really good. IMHO Cold Steel is still the best, but the Crossbell games are more balanced overall in character dev, pacing , soundtrack, etc. But CS has all the craziest moments and my all of favorite key tracks such as Blue Destination.

@@TarksGauntlet Cold Steel has the strongest narrative as far as political aspects are concerned. It has more cliche moments than the Crossbell arc does, though, and since it has a larger cast the character interaction dynamics tend to be more hit-and-miss. Also, the Crossbell arc spoils most of the best twists in Cold Steel, which is probably the main reason people who follow the release order tend to be unimpressed with CS.

I've played CSIII and all I'll say is make sure you play Trails in the Sky trilogy and the Crossbell arc (Zero and Ao no Kiseki) before the English release of III, otherwise you'll be extremely confused. Information that's been released so far for CS IV again requires you to have played every entry in the series. I'm putting this comment for other people as well. It's my favourite series of all time, and I'm so happy people can play my two personal favourites Zero and Ao in English now. CSIII is fantastic as well and I'm currently on the CSIV hype train. The game didn't know when to quit and there were waaaay too many boss fights. I just beat it and I am still angry about it because the game lied and said it was the final fight so many times only to throw in more and more boss fights at you. The trails series is way underated and ppls are playing cold steel just because its the latest of the series and has received good reviews. However I strongly encourage those who find cold steel 1 and 2 interesting to go and play trails in the sky (all 3 of them) and trails of zero and azure. If you wish to continue enjoying the adventure and really want to play the cold steel series till the end, this is crucial because cold steel 3 and 4 will feature characters from series since the first trails games and the plot all comes together from every single one of the trails games up to the latest. Meaning if one did not play the games before cold steel, they would have no clue about half of whats going on in cols steel 3 and 4. Not saying that they wont be playable but one would probably not enjoy the game even half as much as those who have played every game before cold steel.

Talking to all the NPCs can add A LOT of time lol. Especially if you talk to them after every main event. Kiseki games are crazy with the amount of depth they give to the NPCs. After most story events all NPC dialogue gets swapped out. I done about every job board quest and the main game, and talked to most people once as I seen them, but I wasn't aware of hidden quests at the time and likely missed a bunch of those.

Daniel Niv I heard it's very recommended. It sounds like 3 drops a bunch of plot stuff from previous games. I think you can get by playing CS 1 and 2 before the other games, but it sounds like CS 3 will be rough story wise without playing the others, and that there are spoilers for Crossbell.

There's actually one another problem with this particular game, if you played Trails in The Sky Second Chapter. Many things that happening to the heroes is taken straight from the Trails in The Sky SC. It's not really bad, but when you see exact same situation that's not really feel right. And yeah, epilogue is looking really strange in this game. It's not bad on itself as well, but you have a feeling, that it's not really needed. Many fans of the series really don't like it. Hell, I even know people that didn't like last 10-15 hours of the first game. But I think that they overreacting a little. Because the rest of these games is SO good, that I think you can let some things slide. After all, you can't make game THAT massive and expect it to be superb in every aspect.

Yeah, TOCS split the fanbase, but honestly, it was worth it. Falcom is bigger now than they've ever been because of it and the series has got a ton more fans as a result. For those new fans that the new TOCS series was made for that's 100% a non-issue, but I do get the complaint. As a huge "Tales of" fan, I got really sick of mana canons and plotlines surrounding yggdrasil. Really when you get down to it most JRPG's can be broken down into only ever using about 20 different types of events and plot devices. What makes them worth continuing to play is how the characters react in those situations.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, my judgments of a game only consider the game and it's merits on it's own. Other games outside of it I'll use for allusory reasons only but they never actually play a role in how I judge something. If the series has changed I'll find a way to point that out, but that's literally for the sake of pointing it out. When it comes to talking about a game the only thing that should matter in the conversation is the game itself. Games should never be held to the merits of it's predecessors or expectations based on it's predecessors. They should be judged on their own merits alone, and I think a lot of people miss that.

That's why I didn't said that repeated situations was bad. I played 1st Cold Steel, then I played Trails in The Sky 1 and 2, and then I completed Cold Steel 2. When I saw same situations I wasn't frustrated or raging, that they didn't make something new. I just thought that they could do something different, but I don't really mind that they copy this situation from their game. Hell, everyone buying every Call of Duty, and no one complaining about it, and that is just copying machine of itself. So I don't see a problem in the few of those things, after all the rest of the game was awesome and really interesting. AND! This may be problem only for those who played Trails in The Sky. So if you didn't played it, there is no problem at all, it will just comes as fun fact.

CS3 makes more use of elements introduced in the Sky games than CS2's Divertissment does for the Crossbell games.

@AuthorityCat Rean (The MC) is kind of just your typical anime character these days. A pretty middle-of-the-line blandish anime boy without much personality. He's mostly there for characters to project onto but he fills that role well. This is good for some people who may find themselves easier to relate to the story and cast this way but for those looking for a completely character driven drama it can leave a little to be desired. Estelle and Joshua are definitely better MC's personality-wise but the cast in cold steel isn't one you'll want to miss putting Rean aside.

  • @AuthorityCat

Started playing it and I think I like the characters MORE in this series. It is very Perona-like in how the main character is "bland," but I've found no qualms with that. He's meant to be a character one can project onto, and that fits perfectly for the story that is ultimately the end of the series. Making Rean a main character that experiences the world differently depending on who's playing him is brilliant. It allows for greater immersion into the world. Way different from Joshua and Estelle, who are predefined characters with static arcs.

WARNING FOR CASUAL PLAYERS THAT LOVE THE SERIES... Never play cold steel 2 on hard mode... The final fight is so f*******g unfair... It raises the difficulty bar by 10, at least, because the boss almost always has massive hits with a 100% status alteration rate. What's worse is that he can alter so many status types that there aren't enough accessories to protect your team from them, and his fighting speed also rises, arbitrarily, every now and then during the fight. This is a f*******g disaster for those that wanted to finish the game with a reasonable challenge that didn't feel unfair, and let you preserve the momentum of the story. And it doesn't matter what level you're at... Your but will be whipped out many times during the fight... dam! I ultimately had to let the boss kill me approximately 10 times per confrontation (you have 5 confrontations in a row during this fight), so that the game would reduce the difficulty so that I could win.... And the problem is that the game doesn't remember that you had a hard time with the first confrontation, so you have to be suicidal during the 5 rounds... 5 f*****g times! Man this ruined the f******g game for me, at least its ending, which is an important part, as you can imagine... and you can't change the f****g dificulty before the fight! Hard mode in Cold Steel 2 is manageble up till the final boss... you can beat it with ease, except for some challenging fights now and then, but nothing felt unfair... you may get killed, but if you analyised the fight you could prevail with a good strategy... Until the final 5 rounds boss fight appears at the very end... Ok, I ranted enough... But what angers me the most is that the game is fantastic and I hope I had played it on normal difficulty from the begining... I wonder why didn't Falcon showed me this difficulty spike with early bosses in the game. I they had, I would have changed to normal difficulty and replayed the first 2-3 hours... But in the final fight, when you've played 70 hrs, approximately, that's not a funny option... as you can imagine... PS: I experienced this lovely boss last night, so it's a fresh experience for me...

Of course its better, CS2 is just a minuscule fraction of the vast massive, not fully discovered continent of Zemuria. The Trails series is interconnected to one another with its games starting from Trails in the Sky tilogy, Zero/Ao duology to Cold Steel 4 and continuing with the upcoming new Trails title (new arc). Falcom is just small developer with just under 100 people, yet they created a massive compelling world and continuing to expand not even Square Enix and Atlus can't pull something this massive. Don't get me wrong I love Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Persona 4 and 5 however when it comes to world building nothing comes closer than the Trails universe.

this confuses me. I agree with your opinions more often than not on JRPGs, however the Trails of Cold Steel series has perhaps the most boring, trope filled storytelling I have ever seen. It is trying to be deep and have great character interaction, when what it really is, is some of the most bland stereotypical Young reader style storytelling and dialog ever written. I am baffled as to how anyone capable of reading books without pictures would come to the conclusion that the story is great, good or hell above average. Yes, I am aware that people have different opinions and like different things, however, why would anyones opinion be that this series is anything but a snore? I guess if the combat system was amazing and completely entertaining and a blast to play, I would easily overlook the monotonous gameplay between fights. However, the combat in ToCS, ToCS II and ToCS III is average at best. Tack onto that the PS3 era graphics and completely overrated hype train that has fanatics ranting and raving about how ToCS series is the best ever and I find myself wondering how the hell these fans are capable of ignoring how meh the experience is.

  • @TarksGauntlet

    @TarksGauntlet

I find it hard to believe that anybody who manages to keep up with the story can walk away with such scathing criticism tbh. To-each-their-own indeed. But at the very least your criticisms don't seem to be at all where the story really unfolds or even touch on the games greatest strengths which honestly makes me feel like it all went past you, or that your eyes were so glued on one thing that you missed the real picture. The massive, interconnected and constantly evolving world, through which the real story is constantly unfolding. There really never has been a JRPG whose story is on such a massive scope and it's a damn shame to see it not land for you. As per " I find myself wondering how the hell these fans are capable of ignoring how meh the experience is." The answer is simple. The experience to us isn't "Meh," so there's nothing to ignore.

@@TarksGauntlet Believe me, I understand that there is an insanely loyal following to the series. I hold no ill will for those that love the series. I just am always told what they love the most is the story and characters. I found the story and characters to be held way down do to tiresome dialog that seemed to exist more as a bullet point than as a way to further develop the characters. ??? I'm cool with being in the minority. Although if sales have anything to do with it, I guess mabe Minority isn't really the right word. I will admit this : If I had played ALL of the games in the series ( including the ones never released outside of Japan ) and waited years between releases, maybe that would bias my opinion more and make it all seem more grand. However, coming to the party YEARS after the first game(s) were already cult classics, the impact was far less for me. I do not HATE the games. I just find them to be pretty average for JRPGs that have multiple games. SMT games for me are far superior, even P5 with it's mediocre subplot of "Adults are just the worst" etc.. If anything, I am jealous of those who adore these games because, yeah I just don't. I found most of the subplot to be extremely uninteresting and far too Young adult style melodrama. Maybe Young reader should have been Young Adult, you know, like Twilight. People loved those books. Not me. Corny.

Alisa is like a worried mother figure who always tries to help others, even if others don't neccessarily need it. She has a fiery red streak in her emotions, but has a heart of gold. Also, her love for Rean is so palpable, I can't help but be heartbroken if I choose a final bonding event with any girl, but her. The other girls' final bonding events are fine and dandy, but Alisa adds a level of intimacy the others don't have. If anyone else picks a girl except Alisa, then it's your choice. What happened to this game?? A lot of the npc dialogue is just variants on the original text. Rean isn't smart enough to realize Duke Cayenne is the same opportunist as the Chancellor was. It's really weird that he goes around pleasantly having tea with every terrorist character on the airship after all they put him through. You don't have to hate them but nobody in their right mind would be having pleasant casual conversations either. That aside Rean also comes to the same realization twice within the first twenty minutes of the game that people are backing him up, mind you he's been thanking people the whole time by saying I couldn't have done it alone. The writing is all over the place for the second game. It's kind of bugging me but it's all made worse because the game seems to be completely umbalanced and unforgiving. The miss ratio seems to be far worse than in the first game always being followed with a counter. The beginning was good but it took a hard turn somewhere along the line.
