    Oh why did I wait so long to replace my ancient iPad? kzread.infoUgkxhcEDB3r-OJ3_X5hQzr7k1ZofTQy1ao_U This is a perfect size with perfect features. Like all my Apple products I am able to intuitively navigate my way around. I like the fingerprint button, though I have to update it from time to time. I purchased a bluetooth keyboard so I can use this to write more easily. And the price was outstanding. I take my iPad with me everywhere. It's my buddy.

    I've been loathed to ever give Apple money, but they've genuinely done good business by getting Procreate as an exclusive to their egregious money funneling systems. It's absolutely painful that there's not an equally competent Android equivalent program. 100 bucks for the Apple Pencil alone is just too scandalous for any casual drawer to justify.

    @Loftivee I started using Procreate on my 2nd gen iPad Air. You don’t need the top of the line IPad to do that and since Apple has added the Apple Pencil to their lower priced models, that would be a great entrance point to both the device & the app. I had to use a stylus with my old iPad Air but really like the ease of use with the Apple pencil & my iPad Pro 2nd Gen. One difference between models is the number of layers you can use but I’ve not had an instance where it prohibited my using it.

    I use the 11’ 2018 iPad Pro and it is great. I find the bigger iPads too big for me. I always go with the 64GB storage as all of my work is stored in iCloud Drive - never use more than 30GB. I also have the iPad Mini 6 as a 2nd device and great for sketching ideas. I’m thinking of up grading my 2018 iPad Pro to the new 2022 iPad Air as it has M1 and 8G of ram. I love your video.👍

    I have a similar set up, except I went all out last year for the M1 iPad Pro with 16gb of RAM. I think the 11” is the sweet spot for a Cary and drawing. Used to have the 12.9” screens, but didn’t like it. To heavy to be a sketchbook. The iPad mini is appealing even easier to carry, and I do all my brainstorming there and start off my projects. Then i airdrop the files to my Pro if I need something more polished.

    This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much. ❤️ I decided to get an iPad mini 6, because I can draw on screen of my computer when I’m at home, so I intend to use the iPad primarily for drawing on the go or casually at home. So the small size is a plus. An idea: If you want to get a feel of the sizes, you can get the measurements online and cut them out of cardboard. Then you can hold them and sketch on them. It is not completely the same, because there will be bezels and UI that take space up with a real device, but it gives you quite a good idea of how it will feel in your hand. :)

    I've done exactly that while trying to decide on a model. I still haven't decided which size I like the most, but I'm very tempted by the Mini just for the convenience of being able to carry it around easily. And it can be held in one hand, so don't need a stand or table. Currently using a borrowed iPad till I make up my mind.

    Thank you so much for this video! You explained everything clearly and provided so much information, images, and examples. You made this super understandable for me and I struggle alot when it comes to newer technology. I've been wanting to get into digital drawing since it seems a lot easier and better than the traditional way of drawing. And I've never owned an apple product before so it was really overwhelming for me when looking at all the iPad options and figuring out the differences between them. It's just filled with too many words and gibberish it confuses my mind termendously. So again thanks! Apple products are far too expensive for me though so as much as I'd want the newer iPad in the 1st spot for its size and storage I am unable to afford it but the Ipad pro 2018 seems like the next best thing. I only have one question, where do you recommend I purchase these? I tried the apple website but it was incredibly hard to understand and when i tried to order an ipad pro I wasn't given any options to choose from in terms of years and I live in a small town so there's no apple stores I can personally go to. Will a target or best buy have this selection of iPads to choose from? Thank you so very much again!

    I have the iPad Pro 12.9” 2017 and very happy with it, but it is hard to carry around. It replaced my iPad Air 2013 (not procreate compatible), I carried it in my bag every time I gone out. The 9.7’’ screen is an okay size screen, and thinking maybe my next one might be a 11” screen, for I can carry it around, in my normal bag. I still use my iPad Air as a screen screen; to watch tutorials, for photo reference. The 32GB storage in it (which I upgrade from a 16GB), was not enough storage for regular use. I use a iMac as my computer. I enjoy using my iPad as a laptop. Ideally if Apple made a bigger iPad then the 12.9”, I would get it as my main workhorse iPad and a good 10-11” iPad as my travel iPad.

    I'd love if my iPad could replace my computer, but I don't think it would work for the things I do on a computer (like heavy video editing and working in Photoshop/InDesign/etc). But I certainly talked to people who used the iPad as a computer replaced! I think it really depends on what kind of computer activity you do. With the right keyboard set up, the iPad is really easy to use!

I am at a point where I should buy a new computer (currently working on a 2014 iMac), but I keep hanging on to it ‘cause I wish I could make the iPad my only working device. With the new M1 processor Apple is using for iPads I think it could be possible very soon, it all depends on Adobe and their Illustrator upgrades. What do you think, could it be possible to switch to an iPad only workflow?

  • @BrookeGlaser

    It just depends on what you do on your computer! I make repeating patterns in Photoshop and I just don't think I could do that easily on the iPad, even if Photoshop improved their ipad app. Same with InDesign. Plus I use my computer to store and organize a lot of my old files. But I've certainly spoken with several people who have replaced their computers with their iPads! For you, it might work! Just be sure to have a plan in place for backing up your files (iCloud backups ARE NOT ideal!)

    This has been great! One more thing though, the original iPads didn’t have laminated displays like all the others which gave them a gap between the actual screen and the glass you’d touch. Would that matter when it comes to precision or feel?

    Fantastic video! I have need something like this for awhile now. I'm a non-professional artist and have used Air and Mini off and on and never fully understood ipads...esp now as it seems like such a huge mess. I just traded in my mini 5th gen so I could get a nice value towards an iPhone 14 pro max (LOVE IT!!!) but miss drawing and now thinking of going all Apple (due to my new found love because of the iphone 14) I use Microsoft as my PC. But after buying the iphone my wallet is weeping, so I've been thinking, do I really need the greatest and best. All I'll be using it for is art. My iPhone now is my workhorse for all other things...Nope I don't think so thanks to this video. Sure getting a 2018 (leaning towards this one) will date me. But it uses the pencil2 and can still upgrade to iPadOS 15 (not sure about 16) and I never used more than 15 layers ever. AND the new iPad Pro's I've read are terrible. That pencel attachment needing a cord? So thanks so much for this video and I think you saved me $$$$ so I can now go and also buy a mac mini and my whole setup will be complete.

    I have a 9.7" 2016 ipad pro which I bought used for about 400 bucks, and it's been going strong for 4-5 years already! I get tons of layers in procreate even with outdated IOS 10 or something. And I also have the 32 GB version only, and it only now starts getting low on space. So the "worst" pro is absolutely good enough. Size does not really matter since you can zoom. A huge selling point for me was that even if I rarely go out to use it on the go, I still can so easily take it, draw a minute, then put it to the side, and it's so tiny it goes anywhere without being in the way.

  • @BrookeGlaser

    @BrookeGlaser

    If you’re deciding between the M1 iPad Pro and the M1 iPad Air, I think it comes down your screen size and storage size preferences. If you don’t mind the smaller screen size and you’d be happy with 64GB storage, the iPad Air is the cheaper choice, for neaaaaarly the same quality iPad. But if you’d want to get the iPad Air with the 256GB storage, you may as well pay a little bit more for the iPad Pro and get a handful of better features. I haven't gotten my hands on the Air yet, but my guess is with the RAM and M1 chip, the layers are going to be comparable to the M1 iPad Pros, so that definitely kicks to the top of the rankings for me personally. Of course, all that is just my opinion. :)

    @@BrookeGlaser It makes a lot of sense!😊 Screensize and space isn't my biggest concern, due to coming from a 10'2 2019 regular iPad. You say it's mostly the same? Is the amount of layers the same? Because that's my biggest struggle on my current iPad😅 Thank you

    I've been tempted to buy an ipad and I feel like I should go for a medium size so it's small enough for me and small enough to put in bags etc, but I have not thought of the apple pencil. I might get a stylus that's basically like an apple pencil, but I have been told it's better to just get an apple pencil if I'm getting the ipad.

    ThANKH You sooo much for this video!!! I'm a graphic Artist and I currently use an XP-Pen 16 in display tablet on my laptop. I'm currently looking for a smaller mobile tablet where I can work away from home. The section about layers REALLY REALLY HELPED! I use Clip Studio Paint and I work with a lot of layers. Do You have any insight on how Clip Studio works with an iPad? I've been looking at Samsung Galaxy Tablets but I never thought about the layers aspect. I've honestly just been looking for something that will let me digital paint while mobile, where I can use a lot of layers. This is sooo helpful. Do You have any suggestions?

    Hi, I'm wondering if there is any difference in the battery life (one cycle) in the newer iPads? Do you charge it as often as your older one (if you use Procreate regularly or every day)? Thanks for the great video :)

  • @BrookeGlaser

    @BrookeGlaser

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good question! I haven't done any testing myself, but you can use this wikipedia article to compare the battery lives between iPads: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPad One thing to consider: Batteries have a set amount of times they can be charged and depleted, charged and depleted. So let's say you have two 2015 iPads: one has been used and one has never been used. The one that's battery has never been used will last much longer than the used one, even though they're the same year. And apparently you can change out some iPad batteries with Apple (support.apple.com/ipad/repair/service) So that can also affect how long a battery will last between charges.

    This is such good info, Brooke! Thank you! Quick question for ya: If I want to work in the largest possible canvas size in Procreate (27x27 inches), how many layers does that get me with the totally maxed out 2021 iPad Pro? (In my current 2019 iPad Pro, that gives me 4.) Curious if upgrading will get me more layers for the largest canvas size. : )

  • @BrookeGlaser

    Oh hey Cat! :) Yes, you'll get more layers with the 2021 iPad Pros. With my 2021 iPad Pro (under 1TB storage), I get 11 layers in a 27"x27" canvas at 300dpi. I can't speak for the maxed out iPad, cuz mine isn't maxed out, but I'm confident it'll have even more layers than what I have.

    Procreate 5.2 or later can utilize more ram. More ram means more layers.
