Best HVLP for Water Based - Turbine or Compressor, PPS Cups / Pressure Pot - Some Tips before buying

Apollo 7700 gun works great with turbine. Get at least a 5 stage turbine for water based coatings. This gun can be used with compressed air as well but needs a large compressor and at least 11 - 13 CFM
C A Technologies Feline LCFM gun needs only 6 CFM. Can be used with a 2 HP portable compressor. This is a great little sprayer for job site spraying
Cat X gun needs 13.5 CFM at 29 PSI. This requires a large compressor and can be used in a shop with lots of air!
Most spray guns will need at least 11 - 13 CFM and can not be used continuously on a portable compressor. So for portable set ups, go with either a turbine system or 2 HP compressor and Low CFM gun.

Nice! Great to see this video from someone who was longer in spraying than I do. You seem to get good results with anything, I sprayed with turbines for 2 years and just recently switched over to airless for the waterbased finishes. I felt like I was always messing with the gun or adjusting something, I’ve used centurion and Kem aqua. I have an Apollo and a graco turbine.

Some products just don't spray as well as others with a turbine gun. That's one reason I went to Renner instead of Milesi.

Also there are quite a variety of 3M PPS adapters for spray guns which adapter specifically fits the Apollo 7700 and CAT FE-Line pistols.

I’m a little confused about the CA Technologies FE-Line gun as there is a LCFM version and a CPR version and then there is the CAT Lynx. All of the guns look virtually identical except for the air caps they come with. Specifically the CAT 21-1090 air cap which has a maximum rating of 15psi is sold exclusively with the FE-Line LCFM version of the gun which is what I am assuming allows for such a low volume of air to atomize higher viscosity coatings. So if this is correct then all one would need is the CAT lynx and the 21-1090 air cap with appropriate needle and nozzle to utilize a 2HP compressor. I would greatly appreciate it if this was clarified. Thanks for this very informative video!

They all accept the 21-1090 air cap which will atomize with a 2HP compressor nozzles and needles are all interchangeable Edit: the different brands of CAT FE-Line pistols actually do not accept the same air caps. In particular if you have any other gun for CAT that isn’t the LCFM you will need to make sure the gun body is the 60-1301 part number and the head insert # is 60-36, the needle nozzle combo for the 1.3 is FM13 and the 21-1001 air cap retaining ring. The 21-1090 is absolutely critical to getting a 2HP compressor to work with this gun otherwise it will not keep up. At 15psi the compressor must be able to generate a continuous volume of air at 6cfm. You can calculate the approximate cfm at 15psi if the manufacturer gives you the cfm measurements at two different psi’s using ratios and proportions. Usually they’ll give you the cfm at 90 and 40psi. Harbor freight sells a much much cheaper cup adapter that takes the original 3M cups and you will absolutely have to purchase a hard cup with the pressure inlet which is actually quite expensive for being a plastic cup to properly atomize higher viscosity coatings such as high solids and water based latex. If the CA technologies setup is too expensive for you look into an R500 lvlp gun setup such as the aeropro for $75.

If you’re not working in the Renner system, and have to work with paint like BM Advance, or Emerald, do these guns work with these higher viscosities or do they require cutting with water? I understand smaller batches can be run vs a fine finish airless, but do they work with the latex paints. In my experience, HVLP by turbine or compressor require significant thinning and adulteration of the latex paint.

I haven't done much with Advance and Emerald. But I recently sprayed some Emerald by reducing 5% and using PPS cup and compressed air. It sprayed real well. I haven't tried with a turbine so I don't know if that will do the job unless you have a 6 stage turbine

I've tried to get Renner 1245 thinned 15% to work with Apollo Precision 5 and it comes out looking like cottage cheese even with the air at 7.4 cfm. I've failed similarly with Milesi and Centurian 2800.

I think there must be something up with your spray gun. I can spray most Renner products reduced at only 5 percent. Milesi is a different story but I have great results with Renner. I don't use the 1245. Try the 851 and see if you get better results.

I'm in the market for a new cup gun. Been using Renner 688 and 643 for the last 8 months. I have a Tritech T4 which is great. However for small jobs I only have a Husky gun with the CA Tech Bypass Regulator. I've gotten good results, but sometimes the results are not that great and I fell like the gun pretty much has one setting. I can't really mess with the fan pattern, fluid or air knobs. If I do the spray pattern suffers. I'm thinking about getting the Feline LCFM gun. I have 33 Gallon 1.7 HP Craftsman Compressor. In your experience you feel that combo would work for spraying Renner products? Thanks.

I like the Feline gun. As with any cup gun, if you reduce your products at 5% you'll get better flow out. I've reduced the 688 up to 10% with no issues.

What pressure do you run for air compressed use for shooting latex through the Apollo 7700? Also, you didn't really talk about the O/S control and how it works, just curious about this because it diverts the air to the cup and bang. Have you had any issues with the material cup lid popping off? I am having issues with this. Thanks!

What size compressor for the pressure pot? Or which one do you use? I’m looking into buying a painting system. I am a beginner. I want to use Renner products. Should I go with the Apollo set up like this video or do you recommend me putting a AAA together like an Greco 395 and a compressor with a certain gun maybe a G15 or the newer version? I will be painting cabinets in and out of a shop and house. Thank you. Great videos.

If you're just starting up, I'd go with either the Apollo set up or small compressor and pressure pot. AAA is nice but can be expensive to set up. A pressure pot for the Apollo needs only a very small compressor - Apollo makes one.

I recently picked up an Apollo Precision 5. I've been an airless guy for most of my cabinet refinishing career (started with a Graco 395, then to a Titan 655+, then to the T3 and T4). I've always struggled to get good finishes with HVLPs. I purchased an Iwata Anesta W400 a while ago for a toning project. It was fine for thin productions, but I could never dial in more viscous products. However, I am determined to shoot HVLP with confidence (hence my buying of the AP5). I shoot Renner 851 and C005. In your experience, what, exactly, is your setup to shoot 851? Here's what I've done so far. - 851 catalyzed - 5.8 PSI - 1.5 needle with B HS air cap - air valve completely open - fluid valve about 3 turns out from completely shut (meaning the knob would've rotated ~1.5 times) - fan pattern moved 3 notches down from completely shut - no reducer - shooting ~4" to 6" from substrate - Result: orange peel finish How do you set up your unit to lay it out like glass?

I use either the Renner 688 or 851. I would reduce with water at 5% to 10% till it atomizes well. 5% Should be good if your paint is warm. Put a gallon can in a bucket of hot water for a while if needed. If using a pressure pot or PPS cup, don't over-pressurize. Let me know how that works!

What would be better for spraying Acrylic paint? Airless or pressure pot? also which will waste less material?

  • @homesteadcabinetdesign3406

    @homesteadcabinetdesign3406

Either one will spray acrylic paint. But not all paint brands spray out the same. Which product are you using? A pressure pot with a needle nozzle gun will definitely use less paint but will probably need to be thinned some. Airless is faster and easier, but uses more paint. I use airless for primers a lot, and pressure pot for topcoats.
