Best Hike in Belgium | Hiking in Flanders Fields | Flanders Fields Belgium | GR128

✨Hello everyone welcome to my video,
In December we hiked from the train station of Roeselare to the train station of Ypres in 2 days.
We hiked a total of about 46km including about 38km on the GR128. The second day we hiked through Flanders Fields and saw a lot of cemeteries,
memorials and scars of World War 1.
Join us and learn a bit of history about Flanders Fields!
The area we hiked is easily accessed by train or a public bus.

Name GR128 - Vlaanderenroute (GR128)
Length of trail 660 km, 410 miles
Length in days 33 days
Start of trail Wissant(F)
End of trail Aachen (D)
Traildino grading EW, Easy walk, nature trail
Witzand (Wissant, France) - Aachen (Germany), Vlaanderenroute, 660 km
Flanders is a historically old and rich region, marking the border of the Roman languages in Europe. We know that this border divides Belgium. Less well known is the fact that Flanders extends even into France. Quite a large region here is speaking Flemish, even up till today.
The GR128 explores the southern border of Flanders. The trail starts on the Channel, the French village of Wissant, actually Witzand.
A days walk later one enters Belgium. The path often follows roads and ventures into urban areas, so maybe not always too interesting. In this part of Belgium many war cemeteries and monuments remember of the horros of the first world war, where Belgium was pulverized by the great powers.
Days later you walk in the central parts of Belgium, North of Brussels. The countryside is more attractive now. The trail all the way continues to Belgium's eastern border, even reaching the city of Aachen.

Hello Kaatje! That's very exciting, because just last week I was also in the Flanders Fields on my motorhome tour through Flanders. I also found this region very interesting and exciting, but of course also very sad to look at the many museums and memorials. Once again, you took me on a wonderful journey through this impressive region. Walking in Flanders takes a bit of getting used to, though, because you either walk on roads or through mud. At least in winter. Thank you for your beautiful film and the many memories, if you are interested, my video will come in a few weeks. Many kind regards and have a nice weekend, Martin

We did hike on a lot of dirt roads and most of them were not so muddy. The once with mud are more fun to show on a video! ;-) And yes, there also was a bit of road walking, but hardly any cars around, so that wasn't too bad... So I guess I'll get to see some of Flanders Fields through your eyes then on KZread. I always find that interesting! Thanks for watching and have a great weekend! Kaat

A pint is always a must when you see a pub/café and I always think those cemetery's are such a sad sight, yes, it is good they are remembered but I would have felt so deflated thinking about the average age of the person resting there. The boardwalks looked fun mind and when you are tired, hungry and cold, how nice to stumble upon a restaurant, I think I may have stopped there for the afternoon lol, cheers Alan

This was so interesting especially walking through Flanders fields and seeing the memorials to the countries that fought in ww1. I was chocked to hear that even last year that they found 91bodies, this seems staggering and such a shame that the dog tags disintegrated leaving them unknown and I was also shocked to hear that unexploded bombs are still being found in the ground too ! Zonebeke church looked lovely and so did the castle there and Kadsteel Van Rumbeke . This was great and I loved the history you told . Hope the blister healed ! ~ Anna 👍 ❤

The guy from the B&B really knew a lot, so I thought it was very interesting! From the people they find, they do try to identify using DNA. And if they can't find anything, they berry them, but keep the DNA. So you never know later. Of the 91 bodies, I think they did find the identity of 1 or 2 persons. It was interesting to see all those sites, they rerouted the Gr128 in 2014, I think because of the 100 year anniversary of the war. That way it included a few more sites then before. Thanks for taking the time to watch, it's really much appreciated! Have a great day and weekend coming up! Kaat

There were so many historical markers on the way that I finally skipped a few in my video, or made it shorter then what I have filmed. There's so much to tell and so much to see! Lot's of people will visit the area in a car, a camper or in an organized tour. That last option would be very interesting except if you know already a lot by yourself! I don't think that the bomb still had explosives in it, but I thought it was crazy as well that is was sticking out there! I did touch it, just to be on the safe side! ;-) Have a great weekend and thanks for taking the time to watch! Finding a good timing for a premiere is hard, so I can't please everyone... Kaat

😉 Groetjes, Kaat

Haha, I don't drink too much but a local beer or a glass of wine I can handle, as long I don't have to cover a lot of distance afterwards... On a cold an grey day is being able to go inside and eat or drink something the real threat! Have a great Sunday! Kaat

It sure was great to learn a bit about the history of the area. I had never been there, but of course we all know about WW1, but when you see how many lives got lost there, we can only be thankful that we live in peace now. At least here... Not everywhere for sure... Have a great weekend! Kaat

@@StepsbyKaatje The same thing could/is happening again, I don't think we have learnt that much. What a trek! GR128 huh? I'll have to add it to the list. Seems like a great hike with mixture of forests and fields. Small towns mixed in between. How cold is it over there right now? I see you guys bundled up but, I'm just curious. Definitely need that outdoor gear this time of the year. Lol Poefi all tucked in. So do I, I always appreciate the history behind those that lie within a cemetery. You definitely cover a lot of ground in this video. Well done.

It's a nice mixture of terrain for sure. I personally would prefer to be out more often on smaller paths, but I do like the fact that they try to put this GR on as much small roads as possible. Next time we're on the GR128, we'll cross into France!

It's rainy and grey right now, but when we hiked the GR128 in December, it was cold. They anounce some colder weather next week, but that only means that it might freeze at night. 😉
