In this video I’ll show you my personal favorite devices and products I use for sports, sleep and health. Over the last years I’ve tested many devices, and today I’ll show you which I actually use myself, and I’ll share the updated data and analyses I performed, also on some updates on devices I tested recently. I’ll also discuss some other products I’ve found useful for sports and nutrition, but these are based more on my subjective experience. I also checked in with some of the manufacturers to see if they had Black Friday sales and also long-term affiliate discounts links I could share, and you can find those in the description below. Finally, on a more personal note, I also want to discuss a supplement/medication I started taking about 4 years ago, which only a few people know I take, and which has helped me, but you might think twice before taking this. Let’s get to it!
Hello everyone, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. I want to start off with the most expensive device that I own, but this is also one of my favorite devices , namely the eight sleep pod 3. Without actually experiencing it myself, it might have been too big of a gamble for me to get, but it is the device that has actually subjectively helped my sleep quality the most, and objectively additionally has great sleep tracking based on my testing. Now, before showing you the sleep tracking performance of the eight sleep pod 3, I do need to mention that I will include affiliate links to some of the products I will show today. As a personal rule, I only accept affiliate programs from products I actually believe are good, and these are all products I have used for a long time.

Criteria for comparison could be: - accuracy - stays on at night - comfort / form factor - price - additional features - android / iphone app quality - international availability Thank you so much for the good work! I sort of agree, but if you have sleep apnea you just need to lose weight quit being so fat. Last time I checked it was like 85% of people who had sleep apnea were obese. I think sleep tracking is one of the most useless things unless you have some kind of mental, psych disorder.

  • @bane2201

    @bane2201

    @@greuju It's 70%, not 85%. And if you stop breathing 5+ times/hour when you sleep, you'll probably be tired. News flash - when people are very tired, they eat more and exercise less. For me, it was 50+ times/hour. I lost a lot of weight once it was treated. But I still have sleep apnea, because the structures of the muscles and cranium are major components in sleep apnea severity.

    Something I would love to see on your testing of sports watches: a bit more data on the GPS accuracy. You mainly test speed of signal acquisition, and how close the GPS tracks to to actual routes you take. For me, those don't worry me unless they're dramatically wrong. What I want accurately measured for my running is the correct distance and the correct elevation change. For example, I have two watches I run with all the time: a Huawei Runner GT, and a Suunto Spartan Sport. The Huawei seems to measure those most accurately; I run parkrun every week, on measured 5K courses, and the Huawei is usually very close to it, and the elevation measured matches up pretty well with other people's stats. By contract, the Suunto is usually slightly low on distance (typically about 2%), but the elevation is terribly wrong, typically by 30 to 70%. I believe it's a software issue rather than hardware, but still, it's so tiring correcting the elevation in Strava every time.

    00:58 🔥 Eight Sleep Pod 3 is a top pick for sleep quality improvement, offering independent temperature control and precise sleep stage tracking. 05:52 🌟 Aura Ring 3 stands out as a comprehensive sleep tracker with high accuracy in deep sleep detection, though slightly less accurate in REM sleep. 10:46 ⌚ Whoop Strap 4.0 serves as a versatile fitness tracker with decent heart rate accuracy, suitable for various exercises, but doesn't excel in any specific area. 17:57 🛌 Whoop Strap's sleep tracking is good enough for overall sleep stage estimation, but it might overestimate deep sleep and underestimate awake time for some users. 19:04 🏃‍♂ Whoop Strap is recommended as a top choice for health and sports tracking due to its interpretable data. 19:18 🫀 For precise heart rate tracking, using an ECG chest strap like the Polar H10 is suggested, known for its accuracy in identifying heartbeats. 20:15 📊 Signal quality comparisons between Polar H10 and halter ECG showcase Polar H10's superiority during intense exercises like jogging and strength training, maintaining a significantly higher accuracy. 21:49 🩺 When selecting an ECG monitor, opting for a reputable brand that functions independently, like the Polar H10, is beneficial. 22:18 🚴‍♂ Indoor cycling significantly aided in managing chronic pain, with the Tacx Neo2 highlighted as a reliable option. Standing desks and treadmills under desks are also suggested for a more active work environment. 23:31 🏋‍♂ Having weights at home streamlined workouts and saved time compared to gym visits, emphasizing the convenience of home fitness equipment. 23:46 💊 Recommendations for health supplements like Ule, ag1, and protein powder are shared, emphasizing personal use and not being sponsored. 24:15 💊🦱 The presenter candidly discusses using medications for hair loss prevention, stressing the importance of consulting a doctor due to potential side effects.

    I'd be interested in a comparison of how well different devices track heart rate when just doing daily activities around the house. I was told to keep an eye out for a really high sustained hr when not doing anything strenuous. I have a polar variety, but it's so focused on workouts that it's not ideal for my needs. It's a shame because it seemed to be such a good balance of price, comfort, and accuracy. It's also small and not on my wrist which makes it ideal for doing messy things with my hands.

Seems to have more features than the more popular brands. I know some of the health features are not FDA approved, but my main features will be ECG, SPO2 (on demand), heart rate (continuous), Long battery life (there's no time to charge in the morning and evening with sleep feature), Bluetooth calls all a must have features. GPS is a plus. Currently using the Fitbit sense, but no SPO2 when I need it. I have short of breath sometimes, so it's important. Thank you

    This is where I’ve gotten quite confused. I have the 8sleep and also use the Apple Watch Ultra and Whoop and sometimes the Muse S headband. (Yes I play around with a lot of devices and data) I don’t know why but I sometimes get a lot of disagreement between the Ultra and the 8Sleep bed. For example, last night my watch saw no deep sleep at all but the 8sleep saw 1 hour and 11 minutes of deep sleep. Whoop seemed way off with 1hr52 minutes and some of that during the second half of the night. Wish I had a Dreem2 that could easily maintain signal locks.

    Apple watch 7+ are very good at sleep tracking per your data. Do you have sleep accuracy data for them when worn on other places such as upper calf muscle where there is much better contact to skin.

    I’m a beach volleyball player and I’m not sure any of the activities you use for testing heart rate are analogous to that kind of activity. Would love to see how these devices perform when playing vb, soccer, or any other sport that involves a lot of arm movements or changes of direction.

    Since you tested the Withings Sleep Pad in almost 3 years ago March 2021 and it's similar in concept to the Eight Sleep but much more affordable, maybe the Withings warrants a re-test with your current methodology?

    Regarding Finasteride please be careful and watch a video about irreversible sexual neurologic symptoms discussed by Peter Attia with Mohit Khera in the podcast from 2h:18min. Video is called "Men’s Sexual Health: why it matters, what can go wrong, and how to fix it"

    Thanks for sharing! Yes , this is what I meant by the controversial issues. However, I do think given the number of men taking this, this is a rather rare side-effect and one needs to balance that against whatever psychological effects you personally experience because of hair loss (as “unimportant “ as this might be, it is a reality that effects many men)

  • @maximilian8339

    I used Finasteride for 10 months and developed severe physiological and neurological side-effects that have not subsided after I have stopped taking the medication 15 months ago. This phenomenon is known as "Post-Finasteride Syndrome" and there is a rising number of men affected by it. Why it might be rare, its effects are devastating for the ones affected. I appreciate that you mention that there is potential for side-effects and that you mention for example the Huberman-podcast about hair loss in which also Post-Finasteride Syndrome is mentioned. However, I am quite disappointed that you use your platform for advertizing Finasteride. I find it odd, that as someone who is usually putting objective data-analysis first, you only speak about your personal experience with these drugs and do not provide any data in regards to the safety of these medications. As someone who is a big fan of your usual content, I wanted to share that with you.

    Thanks so much! And, not sponsored and no influence from the company, but with affiliate links for the products I like (so there is a financial incentive). As a personal rule, I only enter affiliate programs if I truly believe the product is good (but no way for me to prove this to you directly). Also, I always add Amazon links (even if the product is bad), and people can even support if they buy anything at all on Amazon. So, in that sense there is a bit less bias Incentivization on my side again. But, I get why it might seem that way.
