    My question was featured!!! Your answer was great, although I was surprised that you explored mixing more than recording. There was some great information about avoiding headphones with "color" and trying to find something with a more flat frequency response... it just didn't really answer my vague question about getting levels the way that I thought it would. I thought you might talk more about sound isolation or something. I've found that my go to mixing / listening headphones aren't great for levels etc. because they don't isolate the sound very well. I can hear what is happening around me and I get a false sense of full audio that isn't really in the recording. I guess I was just wondering if there was a model of heaphones that is preferred by professionals recording (not mixing) in the wild. I imagine there must be a pair that is cheap enough to just throw in a gear bag, good enough to get the job done, and comfortable enough to wear all day. I'm not expecting you to answer this... I'm just clarifying my original question for anyone who wants to chime in. :) Here is a fun audio question for next time: How do you deal with the Fletcher Munson Curve when you're mixing? Do you do your best mix for low, medium, or loud volume? I think I have a good answer, but I'd love to hear your thoughts ton that.

    Good video guys! Just my 2 cents' worth on headphones: if your ear pads start flaking of the crappy plastic, try to get real leather covered replacements. My Sony phones were terrible in this regard and I would end up with black particles on my ears when taking them off. Yikes! I found some sheepskin covered pads on Amazon for about $20 and now no more flake shedding.

    What's the best microphone to record in a simple room!?

  • @TheLordcasio
    @TheLordcasio4 жыл бұрын

    I do not agree with your “whatever works as long as it’s flat” mentality. 7506’s accent high end noises, which helps new field mixer/recordists to catch a potential problems, but I feel like they lack the detail to discern a wireless “hit” over high end clothing rustle. The Audio Technica ATH series are a great bang for the buck, but both the AT’s and Sonys are lossy and require louder listening. The 7506’s are torture if you are on a 12hr day. I switched to Ultrasone Pros like 10 years ago and never looked back. If I am on the floor or in the control room, and one of the mixers asks me to prefade a cast member, I can call out the nature of the issue quicker than the other guys wearing 7506’s. A lot of vets also use the Beyer Dynamic 880’s too. I use the open back 990’s for post work/mixing. Granted, there is a level of fidelity in super expensive hi-if cans that’d be wasted on field work, but “any old flat headphones will do” just does not seem like sound advice (puns!).

  • @DeityMicrophones

    @DeityMicrophones

    4 жыл бұрын

    Not exactly. Open back headphones also bleed signal a lot and when the volume is loud in them people nearby can hear what you're listening to... so can the microphones on set. Also open back headphones allow for more outside bleed into your ears which make it harder for you to trust what your microphones are picking up or not picking up. Video crew members use closed back headphones for both of these reasons.

    Deity Microphones I relistened to this episode on my iPhone, my mac and my pc with reference monitors and headphones. You only sound „normal“ on the iPhone. You lack any sort of higher frequency especially on higher end speakers. Maybe some good reference headphones wouldn‘t do you a bad job. Better than the sonys and definetly better than the audio technicas wouldn‘t hurt 😉 I hope you don‘t take this the wrong way, I really like your content, but it just sounds way off for me and that‘s kinda dissapointing for a show that‘s 90% just about sound.
