As an Irish guy living in NY over thirty years and a Guinness drinker my top three bars for Guinness in Manhattan are the Eleventh Street bar, Swifts and The Dead Rabbit. The Dead Rabbit has a trad session early Sunday evening, I think it starts at six, with top players from LUNASA and the Eleventh Street Bar (Between ave A & ave B) has a trad session later on a Sunday around ten led by Tony “The Trad Father” Demarco. A perfect combo on a Sunday, the rabbit and 11 St. I’m still recovering from yesterday, I must of had eight or nine pints. A Guinness rep told me the reason why Guinness tastes the way it does in America is because of pasteurization. All foreign foods (beer is considered a food) imported into the United States , the FDA insists on pasteurization. Some Italians say their imported cheeses and salami’s are ruined by pasteurization. That is why you will never get a great pint in the US like “the grave diggers or Gaffney’s of Fairview”(my local when I’m home) in Dublin. Maybe the reason your scores are so is because of pasteurization.

Pasteurization does kill a beer. I have to ask my guy at my brewery if they pasteurize beer that they serve

The Dead Rabbit is my favorite bar, and I’m there for the Guiness. Their attention to detail not only when it comes to drinks but hospitality and service is outstanding. It was my regular Friday night out, the bartenders are all incredible the vibe and feel of the space is amazing. Hands down my favorite bars as well as the best pint of Guiness.

Dead Rabbit is definitely my favourite. Lucky Jack's (Lower East Side) and O'Hara's (beside WTC) both do a great Guinness too.

Fell in love with the dead rabbit in 2015 , seriously spot been there a good few times since .

Recently started watching your channel (enjoying it, genius idea), and wondered if you did an NYC pub crawl (happy you did, enjoyed both parts). Manhattan prices suck. A normal pint in Brooklyn (the blue collar bars/pubs) - $6 to $8... Manhattan is more expensive across the board. Downtown Manhattan also used to be heavily populated by the Irish fresh off the ships way back in the day (1800s-early 1900s). So it shouldn't be too surprising that they have some of the best irish pubs in the city. My fav pints in nyc are Paddy Reilly's music bar, The Dead Rabbit and Tír na Nóg near Madison Square Garden. Going to have to check out some of the places you went to. I'm deep in Brooklyn (about 45min by cab to the train/train ride from manhattan)... so I'm not in manhattan that often. I'll go for a hockey game here and there, if wife wants to see a show, or maybe a steakhouse. Gunna have to find an excuse to go on a pub crawl with the boys one saturday lol.

NYC is some experience. You're a lucky man and well deserved, enjoy. We complain about Ireland and the prices, but America becoming unlivable for ordinary Americans.

I went NYC in Oct 19 and it was probably $7 or 8 dollars a pint, prices going up everywhere unfortunately!

Dead Rabbit has been voted the best pub in the world twice. Was in there in March, however on the Redbreast, but Guinness is decent in there Definitely. Years ago you couldn't get a decent pint outside Ireland unless it was someone who knew how to look after it, but now most is really drinkable and not shite.

Are you still in NYC ??? From one Irishman to another. The best pint of Guinness in nyc is in the “Alvin” a pub run by three Irish lads. Of course never as nice as at home but it’s as close you would get. Food is beautiful there too and it’s an all round beautiful pub. You’ll love it. It’s in Manhattan on the west side. If you only listen to me once in your life let it be now 😁😁☘️☘️

I was there two weeks for the marathon and could not believe how much a pint was, not only Guinness but even local beers. NYC is no longer cheap.

It’s never been cheap…

When I was trained to pull Guinness, you first pour, top up, then let it stand about 30 seconds in case it needs final correction. Sometimes the beer interacts with the glass differently, giving bubbles, head size difference, glass could be warm, not rinsed properly in the washer, that kind of thing. Once the beer is properly tapped and the lines are clean and above all after running a few pints out, its all about the glass and not all glasses are made equal.

A barman friend reckons their shtick improved by not using detergent only very hot water. Also he reckons new glasses take a while to bed in to get shtick. I've been checking the year on the side since and so far the best shtick is on glasses a couple of years old.

I think I once had a cocktail demonstration with the guy owns the dead rabbit (Belfast guy ) switched on guy about pubs hope the Guinness was good in a Belfast guys pub

Went to NYC in Dec, 2019. Tried to go to the Dead Rabbit but it was too busy. Went to Fraunces Tavern next door. Mighty fine scotch egg 👌.

Pubs will take all the glassware once a week and do a cleaning specifically for the glasses which affects the shtick. Not all places do it which is why some will have better shtick than others. A general soapy wash is probably what a good shtick glass goes through.

Booze is gonna be expensive in the biggest American cities. Plenty of places in the US that sell macro beer for $4 or craft for 6-7, but nobody wants to see you find the best Guinness in Waco, Texas

Big money indeed. 10.80 is crazy. Do like the states. Been a few times and going again next year. Thing that drives me nuts is that sales tax bollocks. Just give me the all in price up front.

Dead rabbit looked best by far if twas first pint he'd have gone high 7's. Something stopping him from giving a outside Ireland pint an 8 deserved it 6th pint of day and said he could have drank 10 more

So glad you came to New York. When I saw you went to LA to try Guinness I chuckled 😂 LA is good at a lot of things but food and drink is not one of them (other than mexican food). New York and Boston are the best places for Irish pubs, but if you want an extremely authentic Irish pub experience Boston is better they have more Irish ancestry there than Ireland 😂

The reason why the dead rabbit feels legit is because it is, it’s owned by people from Ardoyne in west Belfast that previously worked in the merchant hotel.

True but doesn't negate the fact it's extremely expensive for a pint compared to big cities in Europe.

The prices in America are just stupid for a pint. I remember when I was in Philly drinking even when the pound was on the floor and you were paying the equivalent of £8 a pint and often having to tip on top. It's bad enough in the UK.

As a bar man, frankly not got enough time to do the full pour to then let it settle for the punter to receive it. I give it after the second pour, what they do with it is up to them lol. More often than not people take it to the table and let it fully settle themselves, no complaints. Speed and efficiency makes a good pub, and inconveniencing the customer by essentially holding there pint hostage while I decide when its ready is the opposite of that. 🤷🏼‍♂

You have to remember nyc min wage is 15buck. So a tenner a pint is cheap

I would prefer to receive the Guinness to watch it settle myself, don't want to risk the barmaid forgetting about it and handing it to me too late. I also how to drink a Guinness properly so the "precaution" as it were of not handing it to the customer right after its poured does not apply.
