I always explain to people that German chocolate cake was not named after the country, but was named after a man named German, and Baker’s chocolate wasn’t named after the occupation, but was named after a man named Baker. I love stories about words as much as I love John’s teaching videos.

People used to rave about my grandmas German chocolate cake and begged for the recipe. She would giggle and say, I got it off the Baker’s Chocolate wrapper. 😂
My aunt made this and it was the best GCC I’ve ever had. I had to have the recipe and she said “Preppy Kitchen”. The caption is right, it is THE best!
This is Hubby's favorite cake and it's his birthday week. Your timing is perfect!

If I remember right it's called german chocolate cake not because it's from Germany but rather because there use to be a 'german chocolate' brand of chocolate that was once popular in the US and the recipe was started by that brand

This was the exact cake my mom used to make from scratch about once a year at most. She was a perfectionist and it took hours but it was so delicious.
Love your enthusiasm when making videos and your attention to detail!

Omg, this looks so delicious!! Can’t wait to try it. I love ALL your recipes.
Oh my, double the frosting, absolutely in my book!! This has always been my favorite cake for my birthday, i just had one and I am treating myself to your recipe!! Thank you John!
Thank you, John. I never trust a German chocolate recipe that doesn’t use Baker’s brand chocolate. There’s something very distinct about it in association with this particular cake.
I grew up 5 miles from Mrs. Clay's house on Academy Drive in Dallas. I never knew it until the story of the origin of this cake came out on the internet. I do know it was our family favorite and the men in the family requested it for their birthday every year. Another coincidence is that I was born in 1957, the year this recipe was published in the Dallas Morning News. The recipe became so popular, The Baker's company started printing it on the label of their product.
I really appreciate your tutorials, been following for a while but have finally subscribed! I now understand why you explain things so well because you were once a math & science teacher. The step by step guide, small hints and tips, clear voice … it’s all appreciated! Thank you ☺️
I just love your recipes and the way you cook.❤❤❤
Love your recipes. Can’t wait for your new book to come out. 😊
My sister's birthday was yesterday, and she requested a German Chocolate cake. I tried this recipe, and it was so good! The consistency of the cake was perfect. My nephew said it was the best cake he had ever eaten (in all of his 7 years of experience lol). Needless to say, I binged on your videos, and I can't wait to make more of your recipes!
My absolute favorite cake! Looks delicious! 😋
Love it my friend wow many thanks always bless with your family really appreciate everything you do
this was one of the first cakes my mom taught me to make 40plus years ago, your recipe is perfect. The one thing I do is toast half of the coconut for a few minutes. it makes the frosting even more toffee like
This was always my dad's birthday cake! So good!
I made it today and it is sooooo delicious and soft and fluffy and lovely ! Everyone loved it ! Thank you very much for the recipe!!!!🎉
There is nothing better than a Great Grean Chocolate Cake!!! I love it!!! God Bless Us All!!!
I live in Dallas and the Dallas Morning News repetaed printing the recipie for this in the 90's I still have it , this is my favorite cake .
Favorite birthday cake and perfect timing, ❤thanks John!

When I was growing up in Northern Colorado, the local supermarket chain sold German chocolate danish pastries! They were our favorite weekend breakfast treat. I haven't seen them in years...John, it seems like the perfect thing for you to try your hand at to develop a recipe?
Incredibly moist and decadent. Will be making again and again!
Happy Easter to me, I'm making this delicious looking cake. Thanks so much for this one.
My Mother always made this cake for our birthdays (6kids)... and you got it right - we're Texans! Thanks for the memories, Mom! RIP
Because of you I am becoming much more confident in my baking skills. Thank you for showing us there isn't anything we can't bake,we just need the right teacher. 😊

This was such a helpful video. Making this for my mother-in-law’s birthday next week!

OMG…. That looks delicious!
I made it and it is amazing! I’m not a chocolate cake fan but this is different than chocolate. It’s lighter. Moist and fluffy. Thank you!
This looks amazing! I have not had a German chocolate cake in a very long time. I wish I had a slice right now.
As I always say you are amazing. I cannot wait for you to come home. 🤗
This looks soooo fantastic! But I'm in the middle of making your English muffins and watching your bagel video. But this cake will be made as soon as I check to make sure i have the ingrediance. Always wanted to make this:)🥰🤩😘You're the best!
My family's all time favorite chocolate cake for the past 3 generations.😋
This looks like perfection! Yum!
My favorite cake and yours looks AHmazinG!
Glad to see no cake pan strips! I made your recipe twice, first no cake strips and the cake was perfect. The second time with the strips the cake was dense like a brownie.
Looks amazing
This is how I make mine 😮 I like your recipe better 🤣
This frosting's texture looks very similar to the Brazilian brigadeiro. Amazing! 😊
I will absolutely make it halving the sugar and the butter, looking forward.
I could probably watch and listen to you bake all day. How do you stay so slim.
My favorite cake!!

Can't wait to make this, this weekend. 🕵🏻♀️
Looks good 😊
Can't wait to try this amazing recipe. Where can I find that rustic bowl? I love it!
In my top two favorite cakes.
Wowwww so yummy 😋
I’m so glad to see the real German chocolate recipe. German chocolate cakes ARE NOT a dark chocolate cake with pecan and coconut frosting and chocolate icing around the edges.
I'm so making this ❤
This is my husbands favorite cake. Good old Betty Crocker cake mix and icing. 😂I haven't made a homemade cake in years, but I'm hooked John. 😋 I'm making this cake for sure soooooo move over Betty Crocker 😂I'm making John's cake and icing. ❤ You are the best ❤
By medium, I meant high. 😂 Love your recipes, John. I try a lot of them and they are ALWAYS fabulous! ❤
Funny story. We were in Germany for 4 years. I made German chocolate cake for our German friends... they loved it but never heard of German chocolate cake before. 😅😅😅
Great teacher
My favorite
Making this for my son’s birthday tomorrow 🥳🥳🥳🥳
Deeeeeelicious!! 😋😋😋
Watching a second time! Yum... would you do a video about your favorite flour especially if you use organic or sprouted wheat, if that's good for cakes and cookies? ❤❤❤
Прекрасный торт!
Omg looks so yum!! Definitely will make it ilove ur recipes!! You saved us
in before "I'm from germany, and I've never heard of this cake" comments >
Uhauuuu bárbaro!! 😋😋🤩🤩👏👏👏
I used only 200 grams of sugar instead of 350 grams in the recipe, and the sweetness is just right.
As a baker, I am often asked to bring desserts when invited to dinner. German’s Chocolate Cake was my father’s favorite.
Hi John! Love this recipe:) Question.. do you have a sesame seed bun recipe by chance? I'm wanting to make burgers for my boyfriends birthday. Thanks!
Very nice n delicious. 🙂😊.
Love it yummy 😋
Awesome
Winter tip: use the hairdryer in warm/hot setting to keep the butter at the needed temperature. If it starts to harden apply a little heat and if it is too much just stop. Regulate as needed.
Toasting the coconut also improves the frosting greatly.
Made this in 2 9x13's. Didn't change a thing, but used normal semi sweet chocolate instead of german because i couldnt find any in the store. Turned out great! Used coffee instead of water like recommended
It doesn't help that places like Coldstone have an ice cream mix called Germanchökolätekäke, which isn't German either. It's just crazy English with umlauts. Thanks for this wonderful cake by Samuel German and Mrs. George Clay. That frosting looks superb, to say the least.
Oooo woww
I love the German chocolate cake videos ❤❤
I love me some German chocolate 🍫 cake yummy 😋🤤
Hello and thank you for the recipe, it was deliecious! I made the cake this weekend, just with a different frosting/topping. I found the cake quite oily when I took it out of the pans, and after 24hours the delicious fluffiness started to sink and loose the air from the egg whites. Can you please let me know what I may have done wrong. I wondered if the butter was too much for the egg whites?
I want some cake 🤤
Yummy
Mmmm😋Yummy👍
