    4:40 - the Zephyrus M16 and G16 do make sense as more lightweight and less "gamery" alternatives to models like the Strix Scar. A lot of people want a powerful laptop that isn't too over the top design wise with lots of RGB lighting.

    Great video, guys! The only remark I have is that in the 4060/4070 range for laptops that perform well, have a great screen, good keyboard and are relatively quiet you are missing this generation's Asus ROG Flow X16. Those are, while more expensive, the main competitors for the Lenovo Legion Slim 7 series.

    Josh - great video (!!!) - but I have to share that the Blade 16 (4k/minLED) has major display blooming and color accuracy issues - depending on which panel you receive. They do not include the capability to switch between single zone and multi zone (like Asus). There are a few threads on reddit and razors support pages. Also, the Alienware screen is dark (300 nits) - which is crazy. Just FYI...

    Love your channel/reviews, love that you really are using hardware for more than a minute before giving an opinion. Also I love the technical details - spreadsheets, graphs etc. What I would like to see less of is cutting - please cut on cutting :) You are fast in delivery - that's OK, more information in less time - I'm for it. But I would like to see longer cuts, leaving out those that are not informational - like when you are talking how fast or slow is internet browsing on a laptop there is a cut to video of (generic) internet browsing on a laptop - that's really unnecessary IMO because some very informational cuts are second long and could be longer. Also all other cuts that simply can not be experienced thru the video (typing, temperature, even sound can't be really perceived as live/in person) - we rely on your word. So I would like to see fewer cuts, longer cuts to the actual laptop and spreadsheets/graphs.

    The problem with the 7i is that the 4080 so significantly outperforms the 4070 this gen that despite the higher cost, it is actually a practical upgrade, even for those who want the best 'bang for the buck.' For daily use, there are no issues at all. So, even if the Slim is a bit more neat and portable, I think the trade offs just aren't worth it. 4060 or 4070 are not very much an upgrade this gen, but the 4080 is and has at least acceptable 12 GB of VRAM. You have to think a bit long term. It isn't more expensive if it lasts 2 years longer.

    I can speak to the ASUS TUF laptop, I've had it for about 3 years and is running strong as helll. Limited only by the graphics card, it is such an affordable option to run games like Siege at High graphics perfectly. And it has THE BEST fans ever, absolutely quiet as hell, and always stays cool. I've upgraded to the HP OMEN, which is simply put...Dreamy. I can run Forza Horizon 5 on max graphics on damn near every setting with 80fps, only limited by it saying "Low Video Memeory" if I put every single useless setting on max too lol. It's fans are LOUD, and you always need it in performance mode for it to game smoothly but goddamn does it work well!

    Josh, keep up the great work, by far the best laptop reviewer out there. Because unlike the others, you use the laptop for more than just gaming or video editing. You actually have a good methodology and ranking system for work laptops. Recent years have proven that companies must provide us with products that can compete in all aspects: study, work, AND gaming. That means battery life, portability, even aesthetics matters. You seem to be the only KZreadr who realized that people want an "all-in-one" and you help decide what you should compromise.

    The purpose of Zephyrus M16 is for people that want to compromise a bit on the performance for a slimmer laptop (compared to the Strix Scar). I think this could be a solid contender for the best gaming laptop for most people, if you consider the RTX4070 variant which goes for a bit less than $2k but it's often on sale. If the budget allows it, the RTX 4080 is also a good choice for this model. And in my opinion you get more for your money than you get on the 7i. The Lenovo software is disgusting, the design is so much nicer ( the way that the display just starts at the bottom of the chasis , but not only ). In terms of performance, I think they're the same with rtx 4070. There's much to say, but yeah, I think you completely dismissed the model for no reason, other than you just had a 4090 model of it and didn't consider any other model.

  • @zeroxinfinity5816

    What do you think of the 4090 model? Do you think its worth it? How much difference is there between 4080 and 4090 model?

  • @93xDmario

    @93xDmario

    5 ай бұрын

    @@zeroxinfinity5816i think M16 is best with 4070 due to the slim design. A more powerful GPU could overheat a bit the system, so I wouldn't go further than 4080. There is a difference obviously between 4080 and 4090( you can check KZread videos on it), but the biggest gap is between 4070 and 4080. If you really need 4090 power, I would look for something else. The Strix Scar 16 or 18 is better, but also thicker. I don't think any laptop offers good RTX 4090 performance in a slim design, even 4080 is a bit of stretch. Perhaps the zephyrus duo 2023 since it has good intake due to the screen lifting up, but that's quite expensive, you need to look for reviews. I also saw Asus recently launched some X16, which can use external GPU, if that's something you're interested in ( for example get a model with lower end GPU and get an external 4090 or something).

    @@93xDmario Thanks for the detailed comparison! I bought the 4090 model a month ago from Best Buy, its still within the return period (2 months). I got it open box for around $3200 (with taxes). My biggest gripe with it now is the subpar battery life, and the fast battery degradation. Its already down 7 percent of its original battery health which makes me think it had a defective battery. Plus I don't like the keyboard at all. Its a fingerprint/dust magnet and it looks awful outdoors. The screen is excellent though. The miniled is great! Other than that I don't really have that many complaints over the performance, I was playing AC Mirage 4k for about 60-70 fps and 100-110 fps with frame generation. I think atleast for this generation of games it should be fine I guess ( but I doubt it for the next gen). But Im not sure whether to return this and even if I do what to get lol!

  • @93xDmario

    @93xDmario

    5 ай бұрын

    @@zeroxinfinity5816 RTX 4090 will be good for a long period of time, don't stress about it. When a new game is released, nvidia also launches a driver to optimize the GPU for it, so it'll be fine. 4k gaming at 60-70 fps is great, you don't need more than that. And games which require higher fps, like moba/shooters, will definetely run at max refresh rate for your screen even at highest settings (probably not on 4k however). It'll take like 3-4 years until games will demand way more, as the game engines get updated. For the battery issue, it's indeed strange, perhaps an issue from factory with the battery itself. Wear is normal, but not to this extent. For example I have 19% wear on my almost 3 years old laptop. I did take care of it, kept the battery charge at 60%-80% max when I used it mostly on cable, but still, 7% in a month is insane regardless of charge level. In the first year you shouldn't see more than a few %, perhaps 7-10% is what I would expect after a year if you didn't take care of it at all. If you don't want to complicate your life with warranty and all, I would just return it and simply get another one brand new / look for other models. For the keyboard and chasis, indeed, mine is also a fingerprint magnet and gets pretty dirty quickly. I have some cleaning kit which I use and it held pretty well in time, the material itself I mean. For the keyboard itself, not sure what to tell you, I still hold on to my laptop because it has an optomechanical keyboard. It's sooooo good to type and game on it, it has a really satisfying clicky feeling and really good travel / response. Sadly Asus doesn't make those anymore ( it was only one generation I think), I guess people didn't like it because it's a bit more noisy than a normal keyboard, but for me it's absolutely insane and if I have to go back to a normal membrane keyboard I'll get depression. All-in-all, personally I would return it so I don't have to deal with warranty for the battery ( since I think that batteries also have a shorter warranty time ), since you don't know if they will replace it. Technically, it still could be "within parameters" so they might reject your request. If you choose the same model or not, it's another good question. I don't think there's another laptop on the slim side that is better than this, unless you go for the most premium stuff, like zephyrus duo 16 or perhaps Razer (tho, razer got thicker this year). However, those are way more expensive I think. Sadly 2024 I don't think will bring much for gaming laptops...we probably won't have new GPUs and about CPUs not sure, but the current generation is enough for gaming aspect for a long time. So, unless you're willing to pay more, you'll have to look at 14" models ( lenovo slim 5 14" ) or maybe lenovo slim 7. Still, not sure any of them have RTX 4090 variants, probably not even 4080. I think alienwares are also pretty slim, like M16 model, probably a little thicker than Zephyrus M16, but I think their design is, simply put, ugly af and the price is more premium. They do have some white models, which would reduce significantly the fingerprints you see. Not sure what to tell you man, but I would start by returning that model. Afterwards, you could decide to reorder it, try something else as mentioned above or just wait for like 4 to 6 months to see what comes up on the market. Perhaps, since next year we won't have new GPUs almost surely, they'll focus more on cooling, design, making thinner laptops, etc...but no guarantee obviously. It could be worse tho, looking at the model you have in my local shops, the RTX 4090 variant is $4950. The 4070 variant is $2850 (32gb of ram) so...enjoy the good life of having best-buy and other such stores :D ... I got depression when I saw the 4070 variant on best-buy for $1500 ( it had $450-500 off )... In eastern europe appreantly we're "rich AF" and can totally afford this s!%t xD

    One point from my side maybe. Fan volume for now hasnt really been an issue for me. I can play most games on my omen 16 with a rtx 4060 with the balanced mode and the fans make very little noise. The 40 series is already capped at lower wattage for the budget laptop gpus and has very good scaling when it comes to wattage reduction so that probably is the reason why the temps are pretty good while also delivering enough performance for most games I have played so far. Now the requirement might change in a couple years but I dont see myself particularly needing to switch to the perfromance mode while gaming for an year atleast. And anyways I always use headphones so even when I am alone noise is not an issue.

    Hi Josh. Your complaints regarding the Blade 16 are really interesting,. Especially regarding Fan-Noise. I went through two Blade 16's from Bestbuy and both were the Mercury editions like yours. A lot of folks seem to be having display and performance issues with this variation of the laptop including myself. Most reviews I read were using the standard matte black version and it supposedly has a fantastic performance to fan noise ratio. Especially in balanced mode. Still a huge fan of the Alienware x16 though.

    Interesting, I'm an archi student and could use with a laptop upgrade but I am also a gamer you who frankly demands the high performance, hence I will settle for no gpu less than the 4080. As such, the two recommended here, Asus rog scar 16 and the alienware x16 sounds promising. Does anybody have good experience with Alienware? (never had any of their products) As for the Asus, the mini led screen sounds fantastic and as such, understandably why its the best choice. I currently own a old lenovo y700 (it has served good purpose) however it really starts to show its years in archi programs and Adobe software (and lacking of a powerful gpu for gaming). Many in my class have bought the lenovo legion slim 7 and are quite happy with it, however many of them arent gamers so they would never feel like they are missing out. Any tips would be great.

    This is exactly my use-case, as I have been debating between the Blade 16 (Mercury, with 4080), the Alienware X16, (4080 or 4090) and the Lenovo Legion Slim 7i (4070). My criteria were basically 1) that it was relatively slim and lightweight, 2) that it could handle the games that I play when travelling (CS2, Doom: Eternal, Rocket League, RTS games), and 3) that I could open it up in a boardroom / customer meeting and still have the machine look like a "normal" laptop. The Blade 16 met most of this criteria, BUT, I've had several Razer laptops in the past, and I'm always skeptical about their longevity. I've also heard some horror stories about the 16" dual-mode MiniLED display on the Blade 16. It was also an eye-watering $5200 CAD for the Blade 16 (Razer or Amazon.ca pricing). The Alienware X16 is a laptop I'm a big fan of, but for two points. 1) The "butt" on the X16 makes it hard to fit into any of my current laptop briefcases or backpacks, which means I'd need to buy a new one. Two, it's not the least bit subtle as a device to open up in a customer meeting. As much as I'm a big believer in the concept that the messaging / presentation should be the important factor, the reality is that the appearance of the messenger can be just as critical. And the Alienware kind of tarnishes the messaging somewhat. I LOVE the Alienware, and I could pick one up (refurb'd) from Best Buy in Canada for $2800 CAD, with the 4080. Good deal for the level of performance. In the end, after testing out a Lenovo Legion Slim 7i in several local Best Buy stores, I picked one of these up. Keyboard is great (on par with the non-mechanical Alienware keyboard), trackpad is better, display is brighter, and it's 1.5 lbs lighter. It also fits into my briefcase with no issues. Performance is pretty good overall; 200+ FPS in CS2, running everything on high, native 2560 x 1600, and that's with Optimus (not dGPU mode). Same with Doom: Eternal: 2560 x 1600, native, high (not Ultra), no DLSS, and 200+ FPS. I only picked it up last week, and I have until after Christmas to return (if desired), but I'm pretty happy with it. Everybody tells me that I should want a 4080 instead of 4070, but for my use-case, it's the difference between having a 350 HP car and a 500 HP car. If the speed limit is 130 km/h, what difference does the extra 150 HP made?

  • @tfuu5144

    I don’t like that the Legion Slim 7 tops out with 4070 graphics. I wish a 4080 option was available, even in a low-power variant just so you could have something with more than an 8 GB frame buffer. Lenovo offers a low-watt 4080 in the ThinkPad P1, which I believe is even slimmer than the Legion so it’s not a matter of chassis or cooling.

    I'm really liking the Legion Slim 5 14 as a software engineering student who games. It's a nice size: 14,5" 16:10 OLED display with a 2.8K resolution which makes everything look very crisp and it has 140W PD over USB-C so I bought the one from Rocoren for pretty cheap and I use that same charger for my phone etc. My actual charger can stay at home for when I want to game since it's annoying to keep plugging it out and in, in my setup since I manage my cables pretty neat. I get around 7 hours of battery life with normal school use in battery saving mode, quiet mode and 80% brightness: coding, browsing, running VM's (without stressing it too much of course). Most my "lab" sessions are 3 hours and I leave with 60-70% battery left. The only downside imo is that it doesn't have a mini displayport like my previous laptop but only HDMI. So since most ultrawide monitors don't support HDMI 2.1 I'm forced to use up an USB-C port for my monitor. An ethernet port would be nice too.
