Apparently the indigenous word for the fruit sounded similar to the Spanish word for lawyer, so the Spanish eventually just called it that!

American is a variety of English, which means that candy is an English word. Don't confuse "English" with "British/British English"

To be fair, english has some contronyms too, like sanction and cleave. Not sure about spanish.

Always hilarious! Just one correction: French does have 3 words that are masculine in the singular and can be (not necessarily) feminine in the plural: amour, orgue, délice. There is no example of the reverse situation situation in modern French. "Heure" is always feminine.
