Best Friend SPANISH CLASS!! (Clase de Español, hecho por un Americano) | Sam Cushing

A video of me trying to teach my close friend, Bryce, Spanish to prepare for his South American vacation.
We had such a blast making this video, we couldn't stop laughing.... hoping my Spanish was good enough for you guys to take away at least a few key phrases!

¡Un video de mí tratando de enseñarle español a mi amigo, Bryce!
Nos divertimos mucho haciendo este video, espero que les guste! Aunque he vivido en España, Argentina y Colombia (por dos años), todavía no pretendo hablar con fluidez ... ¡así que disculpe cualquier error porfa!

Hi I am a native Spanish speaker living in a Spanish-speaking country. I also speak English and French. Maybe I am wrong but I believe you are using a translator which translates every word literally. While the word “amazing” does mean in certain contexts “increíble” in Spanish it is seldom used to describe a person and then again it might be used to refer to the first impression one might have had. First impressions are rather important in Latin culture as they are in most others. The most appropriate translation I believe would be is “fascinante”. The word “increíble” while might be applied to people in certain instances, it is more often used to describe things, situations or places in that context. Spanish is a very colloquial language and every region or country has its own particular words. In this case since it seems to be a close friend we might refer to him as “un gran amigo”, “una gran persona”, un amigo/persona estupenda ( careful with that because it might be confused with estúpido which is an insult 🤣 ). Oftentimes colloquially it is referred as “tremendo amigo” or “tremendo pana” “pana” meaning “amigo” in some Latin American countries. Most likely believe it or not, you will hear among youth sometimes “mi amigo es súper cool”, “cool” is from English. Chévere might be used but not that often. There are a lot more of expressions used which vary from region to region and country to country. The word “increíble” it is most often used to mean “hard to believe” which has a somewhat sarcastic/negative connotation. The expression “increíble pero cierto” is an example of this. (Incredible but true) to express dismay or frustration. One way to check if a dictionary or translator is good and safe to use is to check two words: sympathy and sympathetic. These are translated almost always as “simpatía” and “simpático”. The only time sympathetic truly means “simpático” is when referring to the nervous system: parasympathetic or sympathetic nervous system which in Spanish is “sistema nervioso simpático y parasimpático. The expresiones used in funerals “my deepest sympathy” is “mis condolencias” o “mi más sentido pésame”. Do not ever say “mis simpatías” you will be in a very awkward situation, although we Latins know you are not a native speaker and we usually are very polite and most often understand what you might be trying to say. Used otherwise sympathy=compasión, sympathetic=compasivo. If these are not described as such do throw away the dictionary or translator app. A good dictionary does give examples of the various meanings an English word might have in Spanish. Spanish is the most complex of the Romance Languages with the second largest vocabulary of the European Languages. English is the first. While English is precise and to the point in many instances and easier to learn ( the difficult part is the pronunciation ) that is why is used in technology and science and most of the time internationally; Spanish, as well as Italian, French and Portuguese are very warm, emotional and passionate languages which reflect the idiosyncrasy of the Latin culture. They are very musical in their accent and the meaning of words is deciphered most of the time by the intonation and way it is said and pronounced. We also tend to speak very fast among us which makes it hard to figure out for a non speaker. This is very, very common in Spanish, particularly this side of the Atlantic. That is why it is rather difficult to understand for anglophones. This is what makes all of us unique and amazing 😉. ¡Hasta luego!

That was a fun topic, as I love the Spanish language. Sam you speak well with a good accent. I'm so glad you were able to study in Spain and live with a family. I'm also glad you were able to live in Argentina for 2 yrs. I had 2 yrs. jr, High school, the 4 yrs Highschool ,with little learning and little conversation. Then I went to a community college and really enjoyed taking it. The professor who taught conversation was nice but she did all the talking, yet she passed us. She did take us on a few field trips to Spanish/Puerto Rican restaurants and to a play In the fall of 1982,I joined a Spanish language program in Mexico city for 4.5 months. I lived with a Mexican family and attended classes 5 days a week. At first I could barely understand/comprehend others and spoke little As time went on I go better. I would say I have a basic understanding, can red a bit and write. I cannot have a long conversation. I like the expression when shopping at a craft type market and something I think is too expensive, "No vale la pena"

Sugerencias: En donde puedo encontrar un latte de calabaza? Of course, if you are at the coffee shop then you could just say: Podria tener un latte de Calabaza. Spanish is the easiest language by far. Your Spanish is excellent and I love the idea of sharing these stories. The easiest way to remember tengo sed, tengo hambre, tengo calor, tengo frio, etc. Es decir en este caso tengo representa "I am". Excellent video
