Hey man, I also have hashimotos, and I was able to completely eliminate my need for medication using diet alone. It took a LOT of experimenting to get it down, and it is strict. It's basically a very strict soft-keto. Meat, eggs, thoroughly cooked vegetables (raw is an absolute no-go with autoimmune), olive oil, avocado oil, limited quantities of fruit, and various seasonings and spices (which you must experiment with yourself). Hitting 80%fat/

I *_FIXED_* my IBS by losing weight, eating less carbs and more protein (ketosis/Mediterranean focused but not super strict), dropping alcohol to only once a month, increased consumption of olive oil, eating more fermented foods, beef bone & vegetable broths, taking omega-3 and garlic capsules, a probiotic supplement, and a multivitamin with Zinc & Magnesium. Also, by fasting (6-18) and doing a 3-day water only faster every 4 months (roughly 4 times a year), and an increase in light exercise. I don't know which of these (or comination of) has lead to this result but I can now eat previous triggering meals like Indian food again with minimal, and often no heartburn or bowl issues.

As a child I had terrible psoriasis on my scalp. In my twenties I had a goiter and was diagnosed with Graves disease. I never felt better until in my mid-40's I found out I had Celiac and my gut was quite a mess. I had never heard the word before! My poor children inherited the celiac and one also has Hashimoto's. I have done most of the diets that you mention here and finally got better. I didn't have information that people have now, so thank you for what you do. Despite having chronic methane SIBO/ IBS, I feel really good today, 11 years later. I really appreciate all the information on your channel. You answer so many questions that I've often wondered about.

I'm sure you're aware that the modified Paleo vs Swank diet study was led by Dr. Terry Wahls (author of The Wahls Protocol), the doctor who reversed her own progressive MS with diet and went from a wheelchair to walking, running, and biking. She certainly didn’t reverse her MS. She definitely walked back a lot of her symptoms and improved the quality of her life. She still has progressive MS, and is managing her flair ups and progression to a much slower pace than she initially experienced. A bit more clarity was needed so people weren’t thinking they could literally reverse their MS with her protocol, like gone forever, which isn’t possible yet

Excellent video, thank you. Many years ago I made some Sauerkraut in the hope that it would be beneficial for my Ulcerative Colitis. I had never eaten Sauerkraut before so I was relieved to find that I liked the taste. I added a tablespoon to my lunchtime salad every day. On the fourth day I noticed some digestive gurgling in the afternoon and needed a bathroom visit. Let's just say that I felt completely empty after that experience and I thought that Sauerkraut would be a great treatment for anyone suffering from constipation. I was concerned that I had caused problems by eating too much but some online sites suggested that my reaction wasn't unusual as Sauerkraut is potent stuff. I decided to l stop eating it for a few days and then reintroduce it by adding very small quantities initially but gradually building up over time. It didn't take long for my digestion to be completely happy with the Sauerkraut and now I can eat large quantities whenever I choose and I have no problems whatsoever. I assume that my gut microbes eventually adapted to the new food.

I wonder how much of an impact the placebo effect plays into all of these studies. Did the reduction of symptoms align with the elimination of certain foods that matched the individual's beliefs? These studies would be more valuable if there was a clear metric being measured rather than the individual's perception of symptoms.

Maybe there is a reason why a person can’t tolerate a certain food: high ph in the stomach, SIBO, fatty liver, etc. Maybe another desease make you intolerant to a food, you cure it and then you can reintroduced foods once again

I recently saw something about foods containing high amounts of oxalates. Some of the foods we consider good foods, like spinach, almonds, soy, beets, blackberries contain high amounts of oxalates and these can also cause all kinds of problems if eaten in higher levels than people can manage. Is there some truth to that? What do you know about this and could that explain the few people who react bad to things like spinach?

  • @Dan-dg9pi

    @Dan-dg9pi

I saw this too. The person cited very few if any studies and relied on her own personal experience (N=1). And when asked about her own diet, she named four foods (!) I think that kind of message is what gives nutrition science a bad name. I eat spinach and broccoli a lot and don't have a problem. And I think I recall Gil doing a whole video or two with an expert on the topic that made it clear that a small subset of people should avoid oxalates but most others can consume them without fear of damage (e.g., kidney stones).

Looks like some very moderate results, such as "some improvement". My best advice is 5 pronged. To improve your autoimmune symptoms. 1. No ultraprocessed foods. 2. Daily exercise 3. Fasting(16-8).. to include no food at least 4 hours before sleep. 4. A very regimented sleep pattern. 5. Waist circumference HALF of your height in inches.

Interesting topic. I was introduced to the concept of biochemical individuality when I was dealing with a downward spiral with severe food allergies. I'm extremely sensitive to chemical additives in foods and pesticides and herbicides where they affect me much worse than most people. Or at least I notice the effects more than others. One of the things that I have never heard you talk about is glyphosate in grains. I have mostly eliminated grains from my diet because of headaches when I don't eat organic grains. Sometimes I forget like yesterday and had some oats (one of the worst crops for glyphosate) and got a bad headache a few hours later. New studies are coming out that even organic grain products contain glyphosate now, and that blood tests are showing that even children are testing over 90% tested, test positive for it in their blood, mainly being traced to the fact that it is being used heavily as a desiccant to dry out fields of crops and it then shows up in our food supply. One other thing that I have noticed with not eating wheat products is that it has significantly improved my prostate health. And that I notice a difference right away in frequency of urination and difficulty with urination when I introduce wheat products back into my diet. Some people say it might be the gluten because it gums up the works down there, but my suspicion is that many of the problems that people are attributing to gluten are actually due to glyphosate in the food supply. For me it's hard to take any nutritionist seriously when talking about diets if they aren't talking about the quality of food, and the fact that we are literally being poisoned by industrialized food production. It doesn't come as any surprise to me that people get better when taken off of grains because of the pervasiveness of glyphosate and neonicotinoids that are found in common everyday foods consumed by millions of people, and that are banned in many countries. The US has recently forced Mexico to delay their plans of removing glyphosate from being used in agriculture, but you don't hear anything about it. We are being poisoned by our own government and food suppliers while nutritionists don't even acknowledge the problem.

And you find people in the comments of yhis videos, that say for me it was so helpful, and they have a life back. They simple don't lie. But they maybe have some problems with seed oil, but this don't mean that I have will have problems with seed oil. For me it is rational to follow what works for most people as reported in the trial results and then refine to what improves your life. So I went from low carb to Mediterranean diet with a lot of diary products. In the moment I start with noodles or normal rice I am in trouble again.

I had severe psoriatic arthritis for 20 years. I was already underweight and ate a relatively healthy diet (not much added sugar or processed foods). I tried several diets including gluten-free, vegetarian and elimination diet. No noticeable change with any of them. My advice is don't drive yourself crazy trying to treat the disease with diet. I'm fortunate to be a high responder to the biologics (quickly went completely clear.) Don't waste time getting a disease that negatively affects your life under control. Then experiment with diets. And if you don't have the disease, don't tell someone suffering about some diet or alternative medicine that you heard about on youtube. We've given it a lot more thought than you have.

I would love video's going into more detail. The gut-immune axis seems huge to me - it may explain why many people report needing to eliminate so many (otherwise healthy) plant foods, for instance. For my personal journey I would love an overview on the role of specific fats in (possibly) healing auto-immune. From this rough overview, I would guess saturated (usually animal) fats are to be avoided, while plant-fats and omega 3s are possibly healthy.

As a long time follower (60 or so years), none of these are clear enough to influence my choices. We have to test ourselves. Eliminate foods that were non existant 100 years ago and then self test?

My guess is if people with food sensitivities got an allergy test, they would find they are not "officially" allergic to any of those foods. Which may be correct in one way, but woefully wrong in the most important way. People would be greatly helped by better tests. Elimination diets are slow and error-prone.

well done ! I would highly appreciate a vid about IGG antibodies created by foodproteins.. some say they matter others say not at all.. and could this, besides the "lack of specific bacteria for a certain food " theory, be another explanation for so many individual intolerances ?

I wish I was able to tolerate it! I have been on the AIP Diet for 4 months and have had wonderful results but have wondered about other diets, so thank you!

@@eomorrow You could consider making your own kombucha. Yes, it needs sugar to feed the bacteria and yeast (the SCOBY, or symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast), but you can make it without adding extra fruit purees and such, and you can let it ferment longer, which will reduce the sugar since the SCOBY continues to feed on the sugar. That will also increase the tartness. KZread is full of make-your-own kombucha videos.

Live yogurt and miso for years, no improvement. Natto - some improvement after a few months. I still cannot eat any onion or white potato, or too much whole wheat or dairy. I can eat other gluten though. And garlic, no problem even though it's a Fodmap and related to onion. I agree with the hypothesis that it's highly individual. I can't fast. I already eat only 2 meals, and I am underweight. 😢

i would like you to discuss these videos about Hashimoto's. lately youtube has been posting tons of videos making claims about "curing" it or reducing symptoms. I have Hashimoto's and the thyroid meds seem to be enough for me. why do some people have such extreme symptoms and some just seem to deal with it? all of them say not to use salt with iodine because it makes it worse. I have always used it and my symptoms are nothing to call home about. can you do a whole video on hashimoto's?

Food digestion is energy intensive, and some are more intensive than others. That alone would explain why some are more fatigue inducing than others, as with how much one eats. The food need to be broken down, and absorbed, and what variables is involved that can explain individual differences? How much is gut bacteria, or stomach acid, or any other factors in the process.
