Truly wholesome seeing a father teaching the things he loves to his son. But teaching him how to ride motorcycles is on a different level of love right there. Man i wish more fathers were like you.

This is one of the best bikes ever, whether you are a beginner or a seasoned rider. Super versatile, great engine response, and incredible handling.

Ive been riding since '97, se definitely not a beginner. Actually i just swapped my '15 HD Street 500 for a '07 S40 Boulevard. I far prefer this, its lighter, narrower and has heaps of tortque. I love the simplicity too. Im not a fan of computers and EFI multi cylinder bikes.

This was awesome! thanks guys! I’m 5’6” and just buying my first bike. I sat on a BEAUTY of a bike today - a white, 3-tone S40. I hadn’t really been considering an S40, so hadn’t read or watched much. But this video totally gives me confidence that it’s a bike I’d really enjoy. Thanks Chris and Shady Bill!!

I was introduced to riding by my boyfriend. He test rode this bike for me and I bought it on his recommendation. I’ve had it just over a year now and I love it. 😊

I just found your video, as a guy on a pretty classy chopper said my best choice as a first bike would be this one. What I love about your video is that it seems very genuine and the fact that you take a viewer along for the ride is just 👌🏻 I'm sold haha so thank you! Wish me luck, hope I don't fall on my first try 😂

I keep hearing these called "beginner" bikes. I've been riding 40 years now and have been thinking about getting one. I have had an 1100 Virago for about 20 years now and found an 800 Intruder for cheap. I forgot how much I like riding small lightweight bikes. The 1100 is better on the highway but I much prefer the 800 for getting around town and I've heard these 650s are extremely easy to work on, very low maintenance.

Had one. Loved it. And regret selling it. Have had several bikes since, more power, more image. But that S40 was my love. Had a guy pull up beside me at a city intersection while we waited for the light to change. He rolled down that window of his pickup truck and yelled at me, 'I had one of those! Nothing could beat it across an intersection!'. Sounds funny, but the thing had more low end grunt than a John Deere.. really! It was a blast to ride in the city and country roads. It was light, fun, and cheap. Loved it. Wish I hadn't sold it.

650cc dual sport bikes are sometimes used to tour across continents. KLRs and DR650s can do it all, highways, backroads, 3rd world dirt roads and trails. They may not be great at any of them, but they can do them all. That 650 Savage can be a great starter bike that you can live with for years before needing "a real bike"

since this bike is not that heavy why not cut the piston and crankshell shorter which allow the piston to pump faster and acheive a higher rpm

Nice review. I'm still not sure if I should get a Savage or something like GS500e for a first bike. Is cruising on the highway at 60-70mph relatively comfortable? I was training for the license on MT-07, so not totally green, but it was a little too big.

The gs500e is a great 1st bike. it has way more zip than a small cruiser. and is way more fun, That said as a 1st bike I think the small cruisers are a bit better to learn on due to the low seat height. All will run 60-70 all day long and all are an east sell to the next new rider.

You should know that they ALL have a badly designed cam chain tensioner that can go BOOM anywhere from your indicated mileage on. You may get some cam chain noise first {if you're lucky} or you may not. Fix it now while you can {I've had two}.
