Best Fingerboard Trucks 2023? | The Blackriver Truck Review

Ойын-сауық

About 2 months ago, I released an unboxing and first impressions video on the latest release from Blackriver - the BRT 3.0s. I had purchased the 29mm simply red trucks to go with my custom Berlinwood.
After I released the video, there were lots of great questions from you all! First, are there any differences in the 3.0s from the 2.0s? I did touch upon this in the first impressions, however, there were certain elements that I could not answer for certain.
After 2 months of use I figured it is a good time to provide an update. But before we take an updated look at BRT 3.0s, be sure to hit that subscribe button if you havent’ done so already. We have a ton of reviews in the pipeline, a couple more fingerboard history videos as well.
On top of that, I have a little surprise. I purchased two more BRTs to try out! One wide and one extra wide! I purchased these from Faymus Decks because I needed them ASAP! Faymus ships items super quick, and since I’m on the west coast of the US, it arrives within days. Shoutout for the great customer service. I found out about this after I ordered a set of BRT 2.0s from Faymus for the black Friday / cyber Monday deal. They were here the following evening!
Now I did run into a snag. I received both sets of BRTs. One marked X-Wide and one marked Wide. However, upon looking closely, the one marked Wide (32mm) was actually a set of X-Wide trucks. It appears that there was a mistake during Blackriver’s fulfillment. These things happen in business. Now in this situation I definitely benefitted from it. I have multiple 34mm decks I need to set up, and since the X-Wide costs more money, it saved me cash.
I was hoping to do comparisons across all three sizes for this video, but since I do not have a set of BRT 3’s in 32mm, that update will need to occur in the future.
Like last video, the first impressions are impressive. BRT 2.0s were gorgeous trucks. No surprise here, but the 3.0 take it up another level! The embossed Blackriver skull on the baseplate looks so premium!
When comparing the 2.0 to 3.0 side-by-side, I noticed a couple of other differences. First, the baseplate seems to be slightly thicker on the 3.0. Additionally, I compared the nuts between the two. The 3.0 nuts thick base goes higher than the 2.0 as well. Both these show that yes, the trucks have been reinforced!
Also, when weighing the two different trucks, there was a .15 gram difference between each truck. This would amount to the 3.0 being .3 of a gram heavier on a setup than the 2.0. In my video, I mentioned that I felt like it was slightly heavier. And turns out my perception was spot on. Now, Blackriver Trucks always had heft to them and felt solid. This to me is a strength of the product.
When using the 3.0 vs the 2.0 I don’t feel any major difference. It still feels like Blackriver trucks!
So far, I’m really enjoying riding the 3.0s and have yet to have any issues across any of the three sets that I have.
Now, how can you ensure the best experience using BRTs? First, use a magnetic electronic screwdriver. Second, ONLY USE BLACKRIVER SCREWS AND NUTS. This is important. Most stripped baseplates are caused by using a third party screw. The only time I stripped a baseplate was when I used a tech deck screw with the baseplate.
Third, be sure to screw the baseplate flat onto the deck however, don’t screw too hard. The electronic screwdriver helps loads. Fourth, when screwing on the nuts, don’t overtighten them on the axle. Screw them on just enough so your wheel doesn’t wiggle. I noticed the one time I overtightened the trucks the wheel stuck onto the axle and I had to remove the axle from the hanger to remove it.
Speaking of hangers and axles. Axle can move, this is by design, if your axle falls out of position you can simply push the axle back into position and tighten the wheels on each side. It won’t affect your ride. In the worst cases, I’ve also seen other people remove the axle, apply Loctite or some other adhesive, and reinsert the axle. This will prevent any axle movement in the future.
Pros:
Reinforced baseplate
Strengthened nuts
Embossed skull design
Supposedly reinforced steel axles as well!
Pioneer in Pro fingerboard gear
Blackriver gives back to the fingerboard community through event sponsorships, giveaways and contests
Cons:
Expensive - You’re looking at $70+ USD after shipping and tax, however, one thing to consider is longevity I’m still using a set of BRT 1.0s from 12 years ago on a setup.
Weight: Some find it too heavy. Some, such as I, may prefer the additional heft.
Hope you all enjoy this review of the Blackriver trucks 3.0s. If you found this useful let me know by leaving a comment, liking this video, and subscribing. Also check out the history of fingerboarding playlist which features almost 5 hours of detailed fingerboard content!
As always, thank you for watching this video and may you land a super steezy heelflip today!

Pro tip: back-thread/rotate the screws/bolts counterclockwise. Wait for that “tick” sound/feel. This way you know the threads are primed and you won’t risk making new threads. If you just start tightening without doing so, you’ll often strip the backplates or axels, over tightening also does it like you mentioned. I have 1.0 brts with no stripping issues. Always helps to slow down and treat these components with tender love and care lol. I’ve helped a ton of people with this method. Hope it helps more people. ✌️

I've never had BRT trucks, but I'm saving to get a set of this 3.0. I've got two sets of Ytrucks. A set I recently got (34 mm) and another set (32mm) I've rocked for a decade now. To me, Ytrucks and BRTs are the best-looking trucks out there.

Yeah! There's a lot of other little differences between trucks. It's interesting! Like if a deckmaker uses BRTs their design choices will be different from one who mains Dynamic!

@@cdplaya 100%, I like both but it depends on the set up. Like some set ups I try dynamics and it doesnt feel that good, but Ill set it up with brt's and it feels amazing. Always use the trucks the deck maker personally rides and you get the best experience. Most OG deck makers main Brt's so brands like gripskin, berlinwood, prete, woob etc etc are best with brt. Woob is an exception tho since I think it works equaly well with dynamics if you want a different pop angle, however most people will find it hard gettin a woob anyway so yk... a bit of an irelivant peace of advice since if you already own a woob you know this LOL

I do think the use of only black river screws is pretty much crucial, but dont forget to back thread so the screw is in the right place so you dont make a new hole. Also you notice that Chris is using a long screw driver, fingerboarders do yourself the favor and get yourself one. It makes screwing threads a literal brease compared to the stock brr tool. The stock brr tool should only really be used when your putting trucks from an old set up to a new set up. Also in regards to the stock black river locknuts, sorry brr... but they suck. Like they are pretty bad and for some reason I always get one or two that dont truly lock. The best locknuts are the FBS and Karat locknuts which recently restocked, I recomend all fingerboarders pick up a few sets of those. Pro tip, save money to buy extra locknuts, screws (dirrect from brr), and/or hangars for the best experience with brr trucks. You'll probably never need to buy another set of trucks if you only use one set up if you just get an extra set of screws, some extra locknuts, and some extra washers (the original brr washers aren't that good since they are kind of wobbly, somethins slightly thicker and wider is better and adds more consitent presure).
