Hi Chris, I'm from Germany and your channel is one of my favorite channels when I look for high quality ebike information. For instance, I bought a Riese & Mueller Bike for my wife and the only reasonable source for good information was you. In light of the fact that R&M is a German brand that's hard to believe, isn't it. Many thanks for your passionate engagement. Mike

I'm gathering info in hopes of building a cargo bike. This video was great to see the variety of designs and inspire lots of good takeaways, so thank you once again, Chris. That slack seat tube allowing feet(or foot) down while in the seat seems like a kind of critical differentiator. Will it require out of seat stomping on the pedals of my homebuilt e-cargo to climb category 3 hills with a load, or at least an extreme granny gear??? I like the idea of a cargo bike that when unloaded could actually still be used on transit (bus rack, train), and there are weight, size, and design limits for transit use.

Thank you, great information here. I've recently been beginning to think about the possibility of moving my garden maintenance business from an estate car (station wagon) burning petrol to an e cargo bike or maybe e bike plus trai!er. I guess my question would be: Is a bike and trailer set up maybe the way to go if you need different levels of load carrying capabi!ity from day to day. Some days I would need minimal hand tools others I would need the whole collection eg. Mower, trimmer, hedge slippers plus support tools/spares AND hand tools. These bikes look great if I needed the same capacity every day, but maybe overki!l if I need less capacity (or just want to scoot for a sandwich atlunchtime

I'm curious, can you speak to the CVT transmissions, how are they on hills? One reason I'm considering an e-assist bike is I can't ride anywhere from my home without traveling up 6-9% grades. Will the CVT and electric power handle that adequately? In general, I'm probably riding less than 20 mile long trips usually, but it could be a longer ride easily. Thanks for your comment!

Thanks for another great video, Chris. I live in Devon in the UK and have just bought a Riese and Muller Multicharger with the Enviolo hub and Gates Carbon Drive. Where I live is really hilly - lots of short 300 to 600 ft climbs, many of them at a sustained 1 in 5 gradient (20%) and some as steep as 1 in 3 (33%). Having been unable to test the bike on such steep hills before purchase, I was a little nervous about how it deal with them. I'm pleased to say it does manage the 1 in 5 gradients without excess effort, although the really steep bits do require quite a strong rider and I suspect I might want to avoid those bits when I'm carrying a full load. I love the transmission on this bike. Very easy to use and intuitive. Great that you can adjust the ratio regardless of whether you are under load, freewheeling or stationary. It's really useful at the point when a hill just starts to ease off - the point where, with derailleur gears, you have to temporarily take the strain off to change up and then struggle to regain momentum. Just thought this comment might help anyone living in a hillier region who isn't sure whether the Enviolo would be suitable for them.

@@Propelbikes hey, thank you for the response. And I get it now knowing that you do not carry that bike yet. The Bullitt is an amazing bike. well balanced, fast, lightweight, and really good carrying load capacity. I choose not to buy the E version, and instead installed a Bafang 750 watt mid drive motor. I have tried the E version and its awesome. I have the mid drive motor along with the Fallbrook continuously variable rear hub. That combination works really well, especially with the hills of Oakland and San Francisco. My kid love it also. holla back if you want some pics or if you have any other questions. Hi Chris, it'd be awesome if you could feature some exotic bikes like foldable tandem e-bikes, and electric tandem bikes for families. I'd love to see these bikes, including cargo bikes, with longer range, faster charging, love the ones that still offer regen braking. Or it'd be awesome if you could hook up something like a powerfilm Lightsaver Max (solar panel) strapped to a backpack what would that extend the range like.

I ride a Bike Friday Haul A Day and its my favorite cargo bike out of the three I have owned. I just put an e-assist system on it, but even before that its the best. I had an Xtracycle with Bionix kit (5,000 miles on it) and Surely Big Dummy with same (put 5,000 on that too). The Xtracycle was great for really loading it up, but the length and overall size were drawbacks. Really firm frame, but wouldn't fit in the elevator at work. The Big Dummy was a nice riding bike with no load, but once loaded, say with a 120 pound passenger, it was difficult to keep straight. The frame was too flexible. The BF is light and easy to maneuver. With a heavy load it is not wippy or flexible and feels very stable. Will fit on a standard bus bike rack too by turning the front wheel backwards.Without a load it rides very nice too and doesn't feel bulky at all.

I looked at a Tern because it could take an adult passenger on the back, so you don’t necessarily need children to justify owning one. I actually ended up with a Raleigh ebike because of not only the cost, but weight and the step through frame. I couldn’t justify the extra expense as I have rarely wanted to give someone a lift and I prefer to have support from a local cycle shop rather than have to get to London.

Are there any ebikes that have a scooter type seat. I am a very big guy and have never found a comfortable sadle that could hold my close to 500lb weight. I will be lower soon it was 520 just 2 weeks ago. a bike will help me get it off faster, but most are not strong enough. I have a worksman trike, but it has just 3 gears and it is very hilly where i live and does not have electric.

Great video for knowledge about ebikes! I'm retiring from teaching after 38 yrs. & moving into a Sprinter van conversion since both daughters are now in college. I'm going to bounce around different towns about every 7 -10 days. Am looking for a cargo ebike and originally looked at the Rad cargo, but friends said to stay away from it. (I also notice it wasn't in your video) I really like the Tern S00, perfect for zipping around towns & grocery store. Where is your shop located?

It’s really optimized well for that.

Dear Chris, I’m from Germany and I really enjoy all of your videos and it‘s fun to watch them. The next bike will be a Load 60 or 75 an a question occured, when I saw a scene where Tara enters a Load 75 with 3 child seats in it. In Germany there is no possibility to order the high sidewalls with 3 kids seats. Is that different in the US or did you order the high side walls separately an changed the low ones for them? Thanks for your answer. Go on with your fabulous work! With best wishes, Ben

  • @Propelbikes

Ben, thanks for reaching out. The Load 75 with Tara in the front actually didn’t have any seats inside. I think you can include the rear seats with the high sidewalls but I don’t believe the 3rd seat is compatible with the high sidewalls.

Bike Friday has interesting and lovely machines. In the end, I went with a cart a long time ago (travoy) because getting the weight off the bike mad for a more easily manageable situation, bth while riding and at the destination. I kind of question a midrive with heavy loads - must be a lot of drive train maintenance. All lovely machines though.

Innovation(touring e-bikes for heavier riders): Similar to the Benno (but with 700c rims) A double rear bicycle cargo rack for e-bikes; to hold a battery in the rear AND alloted for cargo pannier bags. Load capacity? 60+lbs and for those long distance bike touring to also have a down tube battery in the bike frame for extra mileage and there would still be room for a water bottle cage on top of internalized/frame encased battery for e-bike and of course with at least a 750 watt e-bike MID DRIVE motor.

Issues that I have: 1. Some are too wide. They are nearly as wide as a small car. Somewhat defeats the purpose of bike. 2. Practically all are too expensive. I could get a decent used care for less than $5000. 3. I am not sure a two wheeler would be stable enough on icy roads. 4. Bikes tend to be easy to steal. Two guys could pick one up and put it in the back of a pickup truck. See # 2 above. 5. If the battery on one of the ebikes ran down, it would difficult to peddle.
