Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video we are comparing three legendary studio microphones, the Beyerdynamic M88 and M201 and the Shure SM7B. While the Beyerdynamic microphones may not be what you first think of for vocal microphones, they work extremely well. If you're looking for a dynamic microphone for podcasting, voiceover work or singing, this video is for you.

What other microphones do you want to hear compared to the SM7B?

Can you compare Audix OM7, Se V7x, and Sennheiser e935 to SM7B? I suspect that one of this microphones is cleaner and less boomy in the low mids compared to Sm7B. Do you have access to these microphones?

Fortunately, I've got them both. After I've been using the SM7B for livestream all the time, I just wanna try some different. And the M201TG just got into my eyes. I'm now using it mostly for the instruments like piano etc. while I always remember that this one is also great for spoken words (with popfilter and fethead). I'm glad that someone finally make a video to compare them. Maybe I will do so in the near future. Great video, thx a lot for the efforts!

Also, thank you for clearly and precisely labelling the sections of the video. That allowed me, after watching it sequentially, to jump from one mic to another to compare them for specific tests (speech vs. speech, for instance).

Excellent comparison, thank you very much for doing this. One note though, the the background bass heavy beat music is super annoying and distracting.

Have you tried using the M201 as a boom mic? I’m wondering if it would be a better option in situations where you have a lot of ambient noise or reverberation.

  • @JohnScottB

If you're suggesting a boom mic like away from your face, out of frame, then the M201 is a bad option. It doesn't have a design intended to reject ambient noise or room echo. Most shotgun mics intended to be boomed like this suffer from comb filtering in untreated rooms like you are describing. The better option for indoors for mics like that is a hyper or supercardioid small diaphragm condenser microphone. The Sennheiser MKH50 is the crowned jewel for applications like that. That said, the best thing in an untreated room is getting a microphone you can get up close with and talk directly into.

I am very surprised you did not mention anything about the biggest difference between these mics. M201TG is a humbucker. That translate into an EMF hum rejecting noise cancelling quiet as a mouse pro tool. The choice is all yours.

Ooh, it's been awhile since I made this video so I can't tell you any specific settings but I always start with an EQ to get, starting with a HPF around 80-90hz to get rid of the excess low end, and then I just tweak the mid range if there's anything that's honking out in my voice, plus a little extra top end usually for some brightness/snap. Then I compress using a 4:1 ratio and set the threshold so I'm not hitting it super hard but it's always working a little bit. After that if I need another EQ I'll do that, but I keep it simple and let the mics do their thing for the most part.

M88 показался лучшим из всех по детальности и жиру, хорошая нижняя середина, напомнил тлм 103 почему то, но действительно по сравнению с sm7b m 88 на много лучше, хоть и в цене разница большая удивительно

They should just start marketing the m88 as a kick mic. It’s great on kick, bad on voice. Beyerdynamic should just accept the inevitable. Fender did it with the Bassman 🤷🏻‍♂️

The Shure SM7B is the gold standard for vocal mics? Are you kidding? It´s not much better than the SM58 which is in fact a not so good vocal mic, but the SM7B is way too expensive. Compared to a Beyerdynamc M88 or TG-X81 it sounds like a piece of ***** . Additionally: the M88 is gain hungry? Compared to the SM7B it´s in fact a gain monster. At this point I stopped this audio as you can´t be serious.

So you stopped 20 seconds into the video to write this? That's too bad... to clarify, I said it's "pretty much the gold standard in terms of vocal dynamic microphones." I challenge you to show me a professional list of the best dynamic vocal microphones that does not include the SM7B somewhere near the top.

  • @anonymusum

@@JohnScottB Of course I stopped after you said that the M88 was "gain-hungry" cause in fact it´s just the opposite. And if there´s a gain-hungry mic out there it´s the SM7B. So why should I have listened to something that is so far away from facts?

@@anonymusum He didn't say that the M88 was _more_ gain hungry than the SM7b. It's true that the M88 isn't gain hungry for a dynamic -- and that the SM7b is one of the most gain-hungry dynamics -- but his warning that you need enough clean gain is still valid. You did yourself a disservice by not watching the rest of the video, if only for the various tests. Even if he spoke Klingon, you'd still be able to compare the mics via their tests.
