Portable Thunderbolt 3 SSDs are the fastest external drives currently available. However, they have a couple of issues:
#1: They're pretty expensive at around $220-400.
#2: They slow down substantially after 20-48GB of storage written.
The Custom DIY Portable SSD does not slow down. It runs at full speed and does not overheat!
We used the Sabrent Rocket 1TB SSD which is using the brand new Phison PS5016-E16 SSD controller which is the world's first SSD controller that supports PCIe 4.0 speeds of up to 5,000MB/s read.
We combined that SSD with the Trebleet Thunderbolt 3 enclosure that supports speeds of up to 3,000MB/s as well as USB-C 10gbps for maximum compatibility to create the fastest portable SSD you can get your hands on right now!
This is great if you need a portable external Thunderbolt 3 SSD for your MacBook, Mac or any PC or computer that supports Thunderbolt 3.

Actually, I followed your advice a year and a half ago, buying the combination Trebleet enclosure and Sabrent Rocket. The result was DISASTROUS. My M1 Mac mini kept spontaneously disconnecting the drive. I complained to Apple and they spent three months doing a bazillion tests on the mini, eventually replacing my entire logic board. But the problem stayed the same all the way through. I complained to Trebleet, and they said sorry, not our fault: must be your Sabrent Rocket. So I complained to Sabrent, and they said sorry, it must be your Trebleet enclosure. So I went back to Trebleet again, and they suddenly announced that they had changed their list of compatible SSDs, marking the Sabrent Rocket as “incompatible with Apple computers”. Oh, and the Sabrent warranty? They refused to honor it. Net result, after following your recommendations last year, I have a $450 paperweight on my desk.

I bought the 1TB Sabrent Rocket SSD on your recommendation and it was a disaster!! It heated up to such high temperatures that I couldn't touch it! Yes, that hot!! Turns out it was faulty, had to return it to Amazon (a lot of hassle and time wasted waiting for a refund). I wasn't confident that a replacement wouldn't have the same issues. So I ordered a Seagate One Touch SSD 2TB for an extra €80 over the Sabrent and it's purring like a kitten! It's smaller, totally cool to the touch and works perfectly! So go for the Seagate instead of the Sabrent!

I had the same problem with 2TB Sabrent Rocket. It got super hot just idle. It got so hot transferring 390gb it crashed the M1 Max. I’m retuning the Sabrent and got the Samsung 980 Pro 1TB. Sabrent is really fast 2.6gb transfers but runs too hot that fast.

You have to be careful with gen4. m.2 they heat up a lot more than gen 3. I use a gen 4 as my boot and it has a special built heatsink to handle the heat. Other m.2 drives also have D-ram and high endurance which is very important.

I tried this Sabrent (2TB) with both the Trebleet and Konyead. I was only getting around 1400-1440 write with Black Magic for both on my M1 Mac Mini. The Konyead was much less expensive, 109 with an amazon coupon vs 149 on the Trebleet but wasn't usb 3.2 backwards compatible like the Trebleet is. I decided to return them both in favor of the pre build Sabrent Rocket Q (2TB, 1330 Write but still cheaper and backwards compatible).

Externals are basically used as mobile storage for transport of smaller files. So, if you're looking for superfast storage with massive capacities, (IMO) you're better of with a small NAS. But if you're in need of an oversized flash drive, any off-the-shelf enclosure and medium-quality SSD will do the trick, with minimum compatibility issues. Building stuff is always better, but people get worked up at amazing speeds that are completely unnecessary for an oversized flash drive.

Really good stuff, Max! Would love to do this but 1TB just isn't enough, and 2TB would be cutting it close for projects I get that are transcoded to Prores, which can amount to about 1-1/2 TB's worth of clips. Looking at going to 4TB is almost a mortgage payment!!

I used a Ugreen enclosure with the Sabrent Rocket for my M1 MBA 13. Initial speeds with the included cable was 856MB/s Write, 842MB/s Read. When I used the Apple supplied USB-C to USB-C power cord, the readings jumped up to 2624/2629 MB/s respectively! The case was rated for 10 Gbps, but with a good cable, the external SSD runs at 20 Gbps. Am wondering if a 40Gbps rated cable would offer further performance improvements.

Good timing on this as I was actually looking for a Thunderbolt solution as my MacBook M1 Pro 16" with 4 TB is delayed and I can pickup 1 TB model now. I have an order in for a MacBook Pro 16" with 4 TB Drive and feel the marginal cost for the convenience and performance of a 4 TB makes sense. The marginal cost from 1 TB to 4 is $1,000 which is not inexpensive but a good value considering the Sarbrent 4 TB SSD is $649 and the Trebleet is $149 for a total of: $798. I want to avoid having to shuffle SSDs. With this said may still purchase the recommendation here for additional storage. There is additional value with the External SSD as for example if I have a large Final Cut Project I can give to another person on the SSD for them to work on it. Note that I am just an enthusiast and have a large photo library in Lightroom and have been using Apple Photos more seriously. I just received a TREBLEET TB v2 enclosure and put a WD SN770 1TB m.2 gen4 SSD in it. So far, so good. I was looking at other enclosures, but decided on this because of your recommendation, and although not the cheaper options, I wanted to take advantage of the TB speed, and that this v2 enclosure works with both the MBP M1 Pro TB ports AND the USB on my older MBP 2015. Blackmagic speed test has write/read on the MBP 2021 in the 2700-2900Mb/s range, on the MBP 2015 it’s in the 400Mb/s range (as expected). Assembling is very easy, applied the silicon strip, but not sure it is actually in contact with the top of the case, and wonder how effective it is because of that. If not maybe a thin heat sink? It does get a bit warm, but in my limited use so far not excessive. Thanks!

The TBW value that manufacturers provide have nearly zero useful bearing on how long your SSD will last. The value provided is for the manufacturers to have an excuse to not replace a failed drive (if you exceed the TBW figure, you end your warranty -- and the drive keeps track). There is a crypt-o mining application named "Chia". The process involves creating huge files. The process to create those huge files uses "temp" space. The faster your "temp" space performs, the faster your huge files are created. So most people use NVMe drives for the temp space (a RAM drive is faster, but you need a minimum of 256 GB of RAM). Every file created by the Chia process uses over 1 TB of writing to the NVMe drive. People that are avid Chia miners have been hammering away at their NVMe drives for nearly 2 years, 24 hours a day, non-stop. No one has yet to wear out their NVMe drive. Software shows that their drives are "critical", based on them exceeding the manufacturer's TBW value. This is to get people to buy replacement drives. But the Chia miners ignore the "critical" message, and keep processing for over year since they got the "critical" message, and without any performance drop. So when you are shopping for an NVMe drive, you can ignore the TBW value, other than if you expect to exceed that value which will end your warranty. If your NVMe fails, it will not be because of how much data you have written to it. Your NVMe drive will still be working flawlessly, long after you are 6 feet under. You could not wear it out if you tried.

Not only that but building your own gives you a better chance to repair it if the adapter board ever goes bad. With some of the off the shelf ones, the memory and adapter board would be one piece and no socket for the NVME. I have no idea what you would do with those ones. Some of the Samsung T series external SSDs are like that too. Some of them have a replaceable drive inside but then some of them have it all on one board and no socketed separate drive. That is the T5 or T7. Or the WD might have a socketed drive but glue holding it in.

Perfect timing Max. I am planning a MBA purchase and was thinking about external drives... Do you think it's better to go with the 256GB storage and then do it all externally in a box like this? I was thinking about doing 512GB internal and then getting an external for all image files, etc. but I could see going with 256GB and then either getting a larger external or a pair of externals. Lastly, what is the performance specs and cost sweetpoint in the Sabrent drives? Is the 1TB the best or does the 2TB read/write faster?

Sure you can do it very easily. Get the NVME of your choice and a USB 3.2 gen 2 x 2 enclosure. Go for Thunderbolt 3 or better if you have the cash!! The only drawbacks of Thunderbolt are price and Thunderbolt devices not working on a USB socket (even though the USB-C variant looks the same for both standards). If you don't need the SSD to be portable, that can allow even more speed from a connection to a PCIe slot directly.

Unfortunately the Acasis TB4 enclosure I was looking at had a disclaimer that the WD850 and the Samsung Pro980 are not recommended. I reached out to them and received a reply that it would work but only give write speeds below 1000. Some other vids on KZread seem to echo these results, especially with the WD850.
