Best Budget Tablet in 2020? Unboxing the Veikk A15 Pro - Review after testing for 6 Months

Need a great graphic drawing tablet for around $50*? The Veikk A15 Pro is an excellent choice! I'm using this for art and photography and even making 3D models for 3D printing.
Download the drivers from the official website:
www.veikk.com/
I purchased both of these A15 Pro tablets on Amazon:

*Update 9/22/2020: I noticed that the price has now gone up to $69.99, so keep an eye out for sales!
You might also consider the A50 which has a touchpad instead of the dial but is otherwise almost the same tablet. And it's currently a little cheaper at $59.99.

  • @JaggedThings

    @JaggedThings

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, you can. In the "DriverSetting" Window you can have a maximum of 4 different settings that it can cycle through. The built-in options are "Wheel" (which I believe mimics the mouse wheel), "Zoom" (which should be the same as canvas zoom), "Brush Zoom" (brush resize), "Keyboard" (programable keyboard commands) and then "Invalid" (do nothing) and "Default" (I'm not sure what default would do actually). And you can either save that configuration for "AllApps" or you can tell it which program you want to use this particular configuration for. So you can save different configurations for different paint apps or sculpting apps.

    The settings are saved on the computer or device instead of the tablet. Just like custom button settings on a mouse. The good thing is that means it doesn't matter how long it's unplugged. The only bad thing I can think of is that if you plug it into a new device, then you have to set it up again. Just once per device though.

    Does the surface scratch easily? Also does it feel glossy?

  • @JaggedThings

    @JaggedThings

    3 жыл бұрын

    Using the pen that comes with it definitely won't damage the surface. Will it get scratched by random other things lying about? I haven't scratched the surface at all yet. To be honest, the worst thing is keeping it clean. It feels like a plastic sort of material so surely something will scratch it one day. It doesn't feel glossy at all. It has a slight texture almost like paper, or like the surface of the trackpad on my laptop.

    I'm wondering if I should by this or a50 which is an older version ... Specs are almost the same exception in dial and a50 is cheaper in my area

  • @JaggedThings

    @JaggedThings

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well, you're right. The specs on the drawing area and the pen seem to be the same. The a15 pro has more buttons but if you're like me, you may not need all those buttons. The a50's touchpad vs the wheel might actually be more intuitive to use since you can customize what up/down and left/right actually do. So you can set up/down to zoom in/out and use left/right to resize your brush without having to click a button to switch between zoom and brush size like you do with the a15 pro. The a15 pro has 3 modes for that wheel so there's one more mode to play with, and the a50 has a "two finger tap" function that's customizable. I'm not sure what I'd program the tap function to do, but I'm sure I could come up with something useful. So I like the specs of the a50! If cost is a big factor, or if you think you'd prefer the touch pad instead of a dial, I'd say go for the a50. I don't think I'd be disappointed.

    Can I use this only for note taking for college students?

  • @saintmute

    @saintmute

    Ай бұрын

    Yes. It should work. Assuming the software you use to take notes supports using a tablet. It's an older tablet now so you may be able to pick one up for a lot less now. I'm sure there are newer versions available now too so take into consideration that this one might be harder to find new and getting drivers for older tablets can sometimes be challenging. So make sure you get the drivers before you purchase one just to get ahead of the game.

  • @JaggedThings

    @JaggedThings

    All the buttons and the scroll wheel are programmable so even if it doesn't scroll right out of the box you can program the scroll wheel to send whatever keystroke your software needs to scroll. So if it needs the up arrow or down arrow, or page up and page down, it can send those keystrokes. I've yet to try to use it as an input device for a phone or tablet, although they say it can work with those. I don't know how it'd work in that situation. I'm sure there's instructions out there somewhere if that's how you intend to use it.

  • @JaggedThings

    @JaggedThings

    Long answer: There's a lot to consider so I don't know that I can really give you a perfect answer. I'll try to break down the points that I see right off the top. Personally I don't know shorthand and I type a LOT faster than I hand write so if I were just transcribing what a professor was saying in class, then I'd probably use a keyboard. But if I needed to add little sketches then I might consider using a tablet if just pencil and paper are out of the question. Speed is probably very important so whatever is fastest and accurate. It's frustrating if you fall behind taking notes. Also, if you aren't using a tablet (android) that allows you to write with a stylus directly on the screen, then you will need to get used to writing on one of these art tablets while looking at a separate screen. It takes a while to get used to it. In fact, I ended up purchasing a tablet that has a screen built in. That has it's own set of problems though. So if you believe using a tablet like the Veikk a15 or the Deco Mini7 is still the best choice, then here are my main concerns. The Veikk is larger. The working area is 10x6 inches where the Deco has a 4x3 inch working area. Personally I think it's easier if your tablet matches the size of your screen as much as possible. So from past experience with a small tablet connected to a laptop it was more challenging because small movements on the small tablet meant large movements on the large screen. Likewise if you are using a large tablet to take notes on a cellphone then what might seem like normal handwriting might appear very tiny on your cellphone. So if you were using a cellphone I'd choose the Deco mini7. Also, the Veikk will be powered by whatever device it's connected to. I'm not sure how much it would drain the battery. The Deco is wireless so it has it's own battery which they claim should last 10 hours. That sound like plenty. So if you're planning on using these with a laptop I'd probably use the Veikk. If you're using it with an Android Tablet or cellphone I'd pick the Deco. You will need to practice with either one before you use them in class. I hope this helps! These are just my opinions though, you may discover other challenges and problems when using any device.

    No it doesn't. In fact, the only Veikk tablet that I'm aware of that does, is one of their display tablets, the VK1200. Their other larger display tablets don't mention supporting any sort of tilt function. The smaller (and cheaper) VK1200 proudly boasts about supporting 60 degree tilt.
