    @@DannysGalaxyTab Honestly? I don't believe there is a person in these comments who could raise a welt on my ass much less get me upset. I just felt like sharing my opinion similar to the OP. Just as they had the right to declare what sounds pleasing to their ear I had the right to state what annoys me. Was it particularly kind or polite? No, but considering they had already tossed politeness out the window why should I be responsible for retrieving it? Am I being too blunt? It's aggressive American thing. You see, I simply can't help myself. 🙄 Your little giggle party was "cute" though, even if the wit is a bit dull.

Just a small note - when you go for a more budget-friendly model like this one, you usually need to swap out the blade and also invest in a better miter gauge to get the most out of it. What a great review and super thorough and well presented video. Subbed and looking forward to more videos. About the rubbish mitre gauge, it’s possible to use a punch or nail set to make a dimple at a few points along the bar which (by displacing material) makes the bar a little wider, works better on a steel bar of course, but may help. For the vertical angle it would need shimming. Best of luck with your channel, I am sure you’ll do fantastically well!

    I've had mine now for about four months and it hasn't missed a beat. There has been quite a bit of talk about the differences between this and the DeWalt and the only thing anyone has given me is that the gearing screws for the height adjustment are plastic on the Rutlands and metal on the DeWalt. I don't see the price difference being justified by that! It's a cracking saw. I got a mitre gauge from Banggood and shoved the other one in a drawer with all the other standard issue ones. Never had a good one!

    Thank you, I think my dewalt thicknesser is great, I can't really fault it it's definately worth the extra bit of money because it produces small shavings rather than strips of wood that clog up the machine like my old Triton thicknesser did. My Scheppach planer is okay, it's getting old (approx 5 years). It's not been used tons in that time but I've found the dust extraction pretty poor and the fence likes to move a tad. It does produce a nice clean/flat cut but I think for the price I paid (£400) I'd rather get a sturdy 2nd hand cast iron top planer.

My very budget Workzone saw has actually served me well and is surprisingly accurate for a £100 saw. Unfortunately the pressed tin table has non standard mitre grooves so I snapped up the Rutlands mitre gauge offer and am looking for a saw which was going to be a Dewalt but what a price. I think you have convinced me and I assume the Rutlands upgraded mitre gauge will fit the slots which I also assume are standard 19mm.

It makes a world of difference with the adjustable slides to take out the wobble. The flip stop works well with no movement when making repeat cuts. It would stop small slithers of wood falling down the gap, but I don't think a 0 clearance insert would help much with dust. The blade guard would help reduce the spray of the dust and keep it contained but I don't like using a guard especially cause it has no hole for extraction aswell. I think you'd either have to set up a vac that hovers over the table/wood or buy a 3rd party blade guard which comes with a dust extraction hole

    I'd buy the new Evolution, which is a very similar saw. It has been my experience recently that Rutlands don't stand by their warranty and consider the longevity of key parts of their machines (bearings in particular) to be unimportant. I recently had their router motor bearings fail well within teh warranty after light home use, they told me to replace them myself as they consider them "wear items". I had a lathe from them with bearings that failed within a month, they supplied new bearings and a new headstock casting due to poor machining but the headstock was cast with an upward tilt and the bearing pockets too large. Had loads of their other tools break also. In most cases they did replace or refund the ones that I bothered to complain about, but they will no-longer respond regarding the router. Avoid, not worth the hassle.

  • @SplitbarkStudio

    I havent made a sled for this yet, although I don't think it would cause too much of an issue proving that you make the blade gap slightly thicker to accommodate for the riving knife. It all looks like so much plastic and thin metal though, but I like the lightness, the throat plate won’t last very long, but even wood ones need replacing, be good if manufacturers left a copy template to make it easier to make your own. Having a locked riving knife is good idea, though I occasionally take mine off when doing rebates but that’s only because it’s too tall. The horrible brittle plastic blade guard is awful. Be good to see if the fence moves with the machine locked to the floor, but that looks good especially for that kind of money, is there an extending fence? I still use an old ELU which is great with extending rods for the fence so I can rip 8x4’s but not the most accurate thing in the world mind you it’s nearly 30 years old!

    This might be a dumb question, but can the riving knife be lowered much below the height of the blade? I've been considering buying this saw for cutting fret slots using a crosscut sled and a specialist fret slotting blade, in other words making multiple non-through cuts. The thing is, those blades have a tiny 0.6mm kerf, so the riving knife would completely block the cut if it can't be lowered out of the way. I'm assuming that others who use table saws for this purpose simply remove the riving knife completely, though I note that you say this model doesn't seem to allow that. Excellent review, by the way!

  • @SplitbarkStudio

    @SplitbarkStudio

    Very good question, the riving knife can only go to the 2 heights as shown in the video, as far as I'm aware you aren't able to take the Riving knife out. For me, I have had the worst budget saws possible and they even include the ability to take it out so I think it is a small flaw you cannot do it with this saw. Although I do like the ease of adjusting it

    @@SplitbarkStudio thanks for the reply! I actually got a response from Rutlands as well after asking them the same question, they said: "The thickness of the riving knife should always be slightly thinner than the kerf of the blade, as you mention, if the riving knife is thicker than the kerf then the wood will not pass by the knife. The riving knife can be removed but for safety reasons we would never recommend this, it is an important safety feature of the saw." So apparently the riving knife *can* be removed (no idea how, as I don't have the saw yet) but good to know it seems to be possible. And whilst I commend Rutlands for their adherence to full health and safety/liability guidelines, for the purpose I'm looking to use it for, there is virtually zero risk of kickback etc, as may otherwise be the case when using the saw without this feature. Think I might just go for it!

    The new Evolution job site saw looks almost identical to the Rutlands unit in so many respects that I assume they both come from the same source. There are some significant feature differences which may explain the extra cost of the Evo unit and makes choice a matter of personal choice. However, having had dealings with Rutlands in the past over an issue with their router and router lift, I found their insistence on conducting a dialogue via email and refusing to talk to me on the phone (try finding a phone number for them) very frustrating and unhelpful so that I would think very long and hard about spending my money at Rutlands on anything more than a cheap set of chisels - expensive machinery - most unlikely. Evolution on the other hand were very helpful and via the phone sorted a problem out for me very quickly and with little debate, and I have no link to Evolution. That's my experience of the two companies.

    It isn't a myth, dado sets are in practice almost impossible to use with our health and safety laws, even if you could somehow manage to satisfy all the health and safety requirements relating to the dado itself you would only be allowed to use it if you have no other possible way of cutting the dado. I had the HSE round to my workshop, he went through all the things I would need to do to make using the dado 'legal' he then said you have a router table and as that is safer and available to you you must use that instead.
