Great to see younger men using the perfectly serviceable " old school " gear, rather than jumping on the bandwagon of shiny new ($$$) stuff.

Yessir, thank you! We know fisherman come from a wide range of backgrounds with different budgets. We try to help everyone in the community. The shiney stuff is great if you can afford it, but I have caught a ton of stuff on Senators too.

It would be really cool to see this in a 209 or 309, as these are often used for surf casting.

@KoOLe3pY no, I cast my 6/0 stock 80# mono 60 yards at.most... bigger hands help alot. My friends are like 5'10"+ big hands and have no problem getting 80 yards but ig with enough practice any1 can do it...

I have watched a bunch of ulua fishing videos and I have learned how to cast those without doing anything to them I can cast mine a country mile now I've learned how to cast my TLD 25 at country mile you just have to educate your thumb on how to do it

I’m new to mag reels and like this tutorial, but how does the mags affect the spool tension knob? So does having the mags negate the need to mess that tension knob and rely on the mags to slow the spool mainly?

A bit of a demonstration at the end of this video. I did work on a casting comparison video, but surprisingly they all casted the same. Turns out it is more of a rod/user/lure rather than the reel.

Does this only work with the metal spools or will the plastic spools work as well

  • @brigandoutdoors3876

Hey Matt from what I understand it would work. Basically it’s the opposing magnets that do the slowing, not the magnet to the spook itself.

It's the magnetic field inducing Eddie Currents into a CONDUCTIVE moving surface that slows motion. So no on the plastic spool. Doesn't have to be a magnetic spool, but it has to be a conductive material

@@DaRealMaverick make sense... so in theory if you have a plastic spool if you could find so sort of even aluminum plate to epoxy to the spool (I'm assuming it needs to be light and you'd need to balance the other side of the spool) then it's potentially possibly maybe possible to actually make a similar mod that would work? ok, yeah easier to buy a used reel and likely faster even with the sad state of mail delivery these days. Thanks so much for sharing this mod...i might buy a second side plate for the US Senator 113n I have to fiddled with this. Then again for some reason my bird's nests almost never happen after a 'few' decades practice buuut sure would be fun to not really have any concern and hit the cast a bit harder. I'm mean in the spirit of the science and all.

obviously it wasn't originally made to cast....that is the whole reason people came up with the mod - lol. Natural brass and/or aluminum is not magnetic, but alloys can be. I am willing to bet the spool rod (what it spins on) or other components in close proximity are steel though. Regardless, there is a noticeable braking with this mod, try it yourself.

@@brigandoutdoors3876 I have been told that this only works with the aluminum spools but I can't see why it would work for aluminum and not for other conductive metals. Most of the Penn spools, BTW, are I believe bronze, not brass, and plated with chromium, except for those that are obviously anodized aluminum, or plastic/bekelite/carbon. Not that there should be much difference between brass and bronze, when rotating in a magnetic field...but brass is softer than bronze.
