I purchased the SL2 and Love it! It’s my first DSLR. It’s easy enough to use and I wouldn’t have it any other way. If I had to do it all over again I’d make the same choice. I’m not really into using adaptors in general because I like to keep things simple. Thanks for the video! They are helpful!

*_For those who are still confused between which one to choose:_* > The Canon M50 is great and all, the silent-shoot funtion could be really handy in wedding-situations but if you're not a wedding-DP; that leaves us with the 120fps slo-mo video *but* in _720p only,_ the 10fps shutter-speed while shooting stills and the 4K-rec mode; as definite-advantages to the Canon Rebel SL2 / EOS 200D. Now, *Point 1:* Given the specs, if you are a sports or nature/bird-photographer, having that 10fps in the M50 would greatly help. So, go for the M50 in that case. *Point 2:* If you are videographer, which I am more of than a photographer *and* I actually own the Rebel SL2 / EOS 200D _(I'll tell you why),_ things kinda change here. For instance - The 720p 120fps could be upscaled to 1080p and to some audience, it would look just fine but; it's still "720p upscaled to 1080p". So if you shoot natively in 4K, don't even think of upscaling 720p to 2160p... *Point 3:* Now, things start to fall-apart for the M50 here and for native 4K-shooters: one would come to Canon for many reasons and one of the most important-ones are its *dual-pixel autofocus* abilities, _which you _*_lose_* when you shoot at 4K in the M50. Also, it crops-in a little; which (is okay?) but also, the video is a bit-shaky in that. Put warp-stabiliser in post-production and it crops-in again a bit; which would still give us a video sharper than 1080p but it would not be true-4K and uploading that cropped-thing in 4K would actually lead to unsharp-videos at the end. View that in any-format on KZread, say 1080p; it would actually look like it's 720p - you get the idea; which leads to - *Point 4:* The 4K on the M50 is nothing but a _gimmick,_ especially to pro-videographers (it might be okay for casual-shooters but then again, it's unlikely for a 'casual-videographer' to shoot in 4K and put the extra-effort and time in editing the 4K-footage at post for their highly-demanding requirements on a machine). In-contrast to the M50 thus, the Canon SL2 / EOS 200D seems like a more complete and finished-product. And finally - *Point 5:* At this point, shelling-out the extra cash to go for the M50 makes no sense if you are thinking that you'd stick with 1080p for the gimmicky 4K-performance by the M50. Why? Well, you can invest the extra-cash on other equipment like a tri/monopod, an external-mic or even; more lenses. Adding to that, *_EF-lenses on the Rebel SL2 / EOS-200D will always be better than tge EF-M lenses on mirrorless-cameras like the M50 and you can always expand your EF-series lenses for the future if you buy a better APS-C camera-body._* > Hence, the Canon Rebel SL2 / EOS 200D is the clear winner here; for me atleast. Some notes: *1.* Although after the things stated in *point-4,* what you can do is that; upload the video in 1440p or 2K instead of 4K. You'll get better results overall; however, do bear in mind that you'd still lose the Dual-Pixel AF and it can lead you to trouble if, say; one of the footages becomes completely-unusable because the subject was not in focus... *2.* The M50 can be a sidekick to your main DSLR in instances when you're looking for something less-bulky or heavy to carry-along with you. *3.* In that case, I'd suggest you to save some cash and buy the body-only version of the M50; get the EF-M to EF-S adapter for it and now you're good to go; rather than buying a set of EF-M lenses and wasting money unnecessarily. That will be my verdict. Now, I hope everything is now a bit easier for you to choose so; good-luck and happy shooting! 😄👍

I just recently bought the SL2 (200D in Australia) and love love love it. Before it I had a Nikon D5100 which definitely served me well for the beginning of my channel but the decision to save up and upgrade has been probably one of the best decisions I've made for my channel. If I had waited a little bit longer I could have bought the M50 but I'm definitely not disappointed with the SL2. Also just want to mention that I always come here when I need help making decisions like that. I got my mic from doing research from your videos and am still trying to figure out an ideal lighting setup but I just really want to thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you, because I feel like I would still be in the awkward blindly bumbling stage if it weren't for your videos, not just your tech videos but your strategy videos too. You've helped me a lot and I know I'm not the only one, so thank you!

Sean, first of all, thanks (again) for being awesome at your craft. Thanks too for actually replying to comments. While my channel is a fraction of yours, I realize how much effort it takes to keep on top of these comments/questions. Regarding the M50 I absolutely love it. Here's something for your viewers. I'm an author, blogger, etc. and release multiple videos each week. I wanted to amp up my game to the DSLR (my wife has one), but I'm just not that camera savvy and was having issues with getting me in focus. LOL. The M50 is ridiculously awesome, quick, and I don't need to worry. Plus, I can see in the viewer, I'm exactly in focus. I also love the weight. In addition to doing the videos in my home office, I'm also able to zip it around town with me (using the set up you described--I already had the joby and rode mic and so forth). I absolutely love it.

Hi Sean - a great video with an indepth look at the pros & cons of both cameras. You do an awesome job of showing and not telling. Yes, I believe that mirrorless camera is the way to go. Especially for the auto focus alone - 6 points vs. 90 points is a big deal. I move around a lot, and I want a camera that will track me. As well, I like the idea of the smaller size. I'm currently shooting with a Panasonic FZ150, and when I see the 80D and other cameras, I'm always disillusioned with the size. The smaller size is important because I often shoot with 3 or 4 camera angles, and the amount of equipment I have makes the smaller size practical. Thanks again. All the best, Cheers Rick

At the time the M50 kit was $899 they have dropped the price since then which makes the M50 a bit more compelling. You can use touch to focus in live view mode on the SL2 which will help with the limited 9 auto focus points through the viewfinder.

Hi Sean, your videos have been highly informative and inspirational, many thanks! I've always enjoyed helping others over the years in retro game console repairs, and finally pulled the trigger to make a serious attempt to vlog about that hobby. Looking forward to start creating, on your advice I have just purchased the Canon M50, and thought I'd put an extra smile on your face by letting you know my family of professional photographers (mom, step-dad and sister) that are dedicated Nikon fans now consider me the black sheep for going Canon :D

AH! We were just trying to decide which camera to get for our channel. We just bought the Canon SL2, but we were really leaning towards the M50. We are still thinking about getting a second camera for other angles and we still want that M50.

This is so useful for me to watch, but so packed with information I will have to watch it a second time. I'm in that limbo land where it's probably time to get a good camera. My biggest priority as a musician, however, is sound. It's good to know both of these have mic inputs. Though I'm also looking into possibilities for recording sound separately. Do you have any videos where you discuss this kind of setup? Or do you know other channels that specifically discuss that? I'm so new at this still. 😅

I know this video is a few months old, but I wanted to share this I bought my SL2 a few months ago and so far doing great, it did fall over or got knocked over on the tripod once killing the 18-55 lens, but I got another refurbished at a good price. my SL2 has been knocked into, dropped it has a couple of dings on it , shot in 110 degree and 45 degree weather it just keeps on working. Love the time lapse movie feature. Its a great companion to my 7Dmkii I also use it as my carry around camera. Do get the SDXC cards

I have the Canon SL2. I up graded from the Canon T6 And I love it. It fulfills all my needs. Not to mention the T6 took great pictures as well, But the SL2 added a 24 mp sensor & newer digits 7 processor, touch screen better Wifi connection and time laps video with a internal valometer. So it does not have nine hundred focal points but i do fine with 9.

Another great comparison, Sean. I think it's interesting how once you take away the 4K, the M50 and the SL2 really aren't that appart, sure the M50 does have some benifits over the SL2 but are they $400 worth of benefits? Maybe, but right now I'm in the SL2 camp.

I have been watching quite a few of your videos tonight, and became curious about the comparison between the Canon M 50 and SL2, so I am grateful for this video. I have also subscribed to your channel, as there is a lot of good stuff here. I would - and may - go for the M 50, partly because it is mirror-less, and partly for its 4K (and other) features. This, though, would depend on the availability of other EF-M lenses from third party vendors. I will take a look and see what is available.

Great video! I've purchased much of my equipment based on Sean's advice. One thing he doesn't mention is that you can only record video for 30 minutes. Maybe that's a newbie mistake with DSLR (The sl2 was my first purchase). But still, pretty important if you do long-form conversation style videos. Overall thanks so much! This stuff is super helpful.
