I don't have as many as you, but I've been through multiple lights too. I had settled on Knog blinders, and still use them some. However, I recently bought a Specialized Turbo S (used) and it has integrated Supernova lights, both front and rear. They are FANTASTIC. The front light is a V1260 (yes, 1260 lumens). Not sure about the reat, but it's really bright too. The downside is that when on, the are continuously on, no flash mode

Hi Cruise , Jack here from Taiwan. I don't want to sound like nitpicking, but from my understanding, there is a difference between water proof, water resistant, splash resistant and etc... Water proof generally means that the device can withstand being submerge in the water for a certain period of time, while water resistant and splash proof cannot. Upon checking Meteor Vortex Pro official spec, it states that the light is rated at IPX4, which is splash proof. For your reference, according to Wikipedia IP code page: "For example, a cellular phone rated at IP68 is "dust resistant" and can be "immersed in 1.5 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes"."

Sorry, I was using the casual meaning of "waterproof", meaning that they're fine for riding in rain. But that's a good point, I'll be careful about using this word when talking about lights in the future

Over the years I finally converge to just two brands Cateye and Gentos. My choices are based on a couple of factors: 1.USB charge as I use it everyday 2.Quiet, must not rattle during ride 3. Strictly waterproof 4. Detachable easily and repeatably without problem 5. Good color rendering 6. Well designed beam angle, shine on the road ahead but not into people's eye. 7. reliable exposed to natural elements and vibration.

I used a Cateye HL-EL300 in tandem with an HL-EL530(over 10 years ago). That was not good enough so I got an EgalTac M2C4(850 Lm max) that ran on two 18650 batteries. I made a special mount for it, and it still works. This is also about 10 years old and is quite a bit heavy. I am thinking of getting a Fenix LD41(960 Lm) or LD42(1000 Lm) 4AA light, which will be much lighter, have more light output, and use AA's instead of expensive 18650's. I never use them much over 350-400 lumens though, unless it is a really dark road. The beam pattern of these flashlights is just too good to compromise on. Don't give up on night riding, it is awesome. Just be more careful on roads you don't know. I like the beam patterns on flashlights as they are bigger because they have bigger reflectors.

October through April, I spent at least one hour a day, riding after-dark. In mid-winter, my nightly rides were completed almost entirely after-dark. I spent about three hours a night riding with a light on. I used the Bright Eyes 1600. It is a waterproof light with external battery pack. It has 5 modes (low, medium, high, fast strobe, slow strobe). It is a great light for the price. The company backs their products and when the battery started to lose its charge and die quicker, they sent me a new one. It is available on Amazon or at their site.

Ive been using a moon Meteor Vortex pro for a few years now. One of the main features that attracted me to it was the swappable battery as I did a fair amount of 160km+ night rides and always lugging around a heavy battery pack as i did in my early days to power a Magic shine MJ-858 or MJ-872 just seemed very overkill not to mention the extra weight of it, It made more sense to have the vortex pro and two extra batteries. I never done those rides solo so there was never a time when i needed to use even 50% of the power of the magicshine lights. I did use the 858 for evening commutes for a short time with smaller double 18650 battery packs but ive come to the same conclusion as above. I dont need 25% of the lights power for an urban commute. One problem that has always plagued the brand since before the pandemic is spare parts for their lights. Batteries and spare mounts etc etc etc were so hard to come by. I managed to get an extra two batteries when i bought the light in 2018 or 2019. they were hard to find back then, and they are pretty hard to find now and if you do find them, they wont be cheap and you might have to pay a lot to have them imported from outside the country unless youre a resident of HK. Having a proprietary battery sucks. The light's strongest feature is also its strongest weakness. (but yes -- referring back to one of my comments in one of your previous videos about starting commuting by bicycle -- lights were also a thing i spent absolutely tonnes of money collecting, I have so many lights from a lot of brands that have been sitting in their boxes in storage for a super long time) I wished there was a company that still made lights with decent output that ran on a single swappable 18650 cell like my old fluxient U2

I've got a Lezyne 400XL, it is strong enough for my riding. What I like is not having to store & find a charging cable. Minus is the rubber cover, I believe replacements are available. BTW, strap works better if you rotate the fitting 180° so it clips at the back. Regarding the Nitecore BR35 you reviewed, some lights are too strong & not road legal, in any case make sure you're not blinding other road users. For my rear light I have Lifeline from Chain Reaction, I recommend it.

I've been very happy with Cygolite. Currently use a Dash Pro 600 for commuting/errands since it's all in one. No mount to get stolen while doing errands inside. For rides where I do not leave the bike, I use the Metro 700. I even have my Pace 135 from 2009 that still takes/holds a charge.

I recently bought the Nitecore BR35 for my night commutes through unlit parks. It makes a huge difference to my visibility riding on unlit roads with a max output of a constant 1800 lumens and two lamps. I can see all the overhanging branches, barriers, turns and holes in the path. It is very secure and doesn't move even on rough trails. The remote control is handy as is the constant output and time remaining readout. I'm very happy with my purchase and can now cycle confidentially at full speed in the dark. It's waterproof too and also feels like it's good quality. I have some of their flashlights and have been pleased with them so I expect this light to last. I see that they sell the a replacement mount separately which is good if you want to quickly use the light on more than one bike or if you break the one you have. One thing that would have been nice on the mount is the ability to rotate it horizontally because my handlebars aren't straight so the light is at a slight angle. It's not a huge problem as it lights my path just fine but it does limit where you can mount it.

Another practical everyday ride topic. Good on you mate! My light... I use an Exposure Joystick on my commuter. I was riding on the dark bike path in Melbourne which included pitch black sections, bumpy and sometimes wet (as I ride in rain too), so strong light was critical to avoid accidents (to your point). It can be way too strong, and it can cause issue to incoming drivers/cyclists so I would power down in busy/lit sections of my ride. On the back I had a Lezyne Strip red light. On a rainy or dark road it is often difficult for drivers to notice us ahead of them so I would always go for moving flash type (knight rider thing) to draw attention. But it was missing when I got home one night. I imagine its rubber band released itself after going over road cracks at 40km/h sprint on the way home :(

I have been using an older Dinotte boutique brand light set for years. It costed a fortune but at the time there weren't many super bright options. My new commuter e-bike came stock with a built in Supernova light that has a shaped beam just like you would find on a car. I don't have to worry about the light blinding anyone while getting all the benefits of a super bright light. I really wish more average priced commuter lights had shaped beams.

I purchased both front and rear Cateye lights that you reviewed for about $80 (from THE enormous online retailer) last year. They've been rock solid for commuting in the city/suburbs. Battery life on front light is definitely shortened by cold weather, though. In summer, it just lasts and lasts.

Whenever I am on a night ride I always have three lights attached to my handlebar. The first one is a headlight and horn combo that is turned on strobe mode. The horn has a wired horn button. It is very useful during my urban commute. The second one is a more powerful light in terms of lumens that is turned on steady mode. My third light is my back up headlight in case one of my lights is low on power. All my headlights have three modes(High,Low and strobe mode) . I have one tail light that has automatic left and right turn signals and brake lights. All my lights are USB rechargeable. I also attach one light on rhe rear of my helmet. It has three light modes. All of these aside from the high viz shirt that I use. My cycling shoes also have reflective coating on its rear. I also turn on my head and tail lights during daytime rides.

Good tip if using high beam light, the type that can scare ghost away like the nite core b35 or the cheaper variety that comes with a separate battery pack on amazon is to point them slightly downwards away from the eye level of upcoming driver/ pedestrian/ cyclist. Got into a minor accident with a kid on an electric scooter because his front light blinded me as his friend whom I suppose was drafting behind him suddenly swoops into my direction. I could not react in time. As far as back light goes Moon Nebula is highly recommended. Bright, affordable and mounts on most seat post. Garmin Varia rtl 510 is also fantastic as it is a rear light that doubles as a "radar" to let you know by beeping + visual indicator when a car is approaching from behind. I couple this with a good helmet mirror (evt safe zone bicycle helmet mirror) to "scan" whats behind me. Lowers my anxiety when out on the road. Only downside (like most niche product) is that it is very expensive. I am also considering purchasing the noxgear tracer 360 running vest; a lighting system you strap onto your body to be seen at night. Whats holding me back is that i do not know anybody who uses this device. It also looks very ugly.

I use a brand-less China made headlight with 2 CREE L2 LED bulbs (each with max 1,200 lumens) which can switch to 2,400, 1200 or 800 lumens, and also to stroke mode. Price was around US$10. Have been riding with it for more than 5 years in the sun and rain and never failed me once. I fed it with a water resistant mobile battery case housing 4 x 18650 lithium batteries at a total cost of about US$35 which you strap onto the top tube. It weights about 320 gm, but lights up 2,400 lumens for 5 to 6 hours, which I put on while riding at day time. I do this so that traffic from a km away is aware of my bike. At night time I tune it down to medium or low avoid dazzling oncoming traffic and pedestrians. For tail night I use a MOON at 100 lumen in day time. Again it is for visibility. Safety first. Cost apart, I think the Nitecore is a good choice.

My bike light is a 3 LED bike light it is made by bikehut it is the best bike light I purchased it has 8 light levels , it can also be used as a power bank, which is useful to keep my bike computer charged on long rides. Light levels 1) 1600 lumens 2) 1000 lumens 3) 640 lumens 4) 240 lumens 5) 15 lumens to be seen day time 6) 640 lumens pulse 7) 640 lumens with Flash 8) strobe Flash So it can be used as a to be seen light and a to see with light very useful. 1 and 2 are for when I go off road on the bike trails. Hi! Nice little film about lights. I use the Lezyne front light and it is good....on flash. Unfortunately it doesn't last that long on full beam; OK for brief patch black riverside trails etc. Don't know how you lost the cover though (original design I know!) I've been using mine for over 2 years and still have it:)

Great. Although I don’t think that you can really show how much the light shines in your bike room as the camera will automatically balance the excess brightness or whatever. I think you could perfectly compare the lights (as some of us have 300 lumen lights or so) shining in the bike room simultaneously (with 2 or more). So we could see at least some kind of a difference between the beams of 400, 900 and possibly 1800 lumens.

Not exactly correct. If you look a the light 'bleed' into the rest of the room you'll see that the camera does not correct for all the different brightness levels. However, a side-by-side comparison, as suggested by Two Wheel Cruise, would show a difference in beam pattern. At least for the bicycle lights available for testing.

On top of the standard front and back lights, a helmet mounted light is great because you can direct at cars at junctions etc. I have a brace of moon areolites on my helmet. Great battery life on flash. I have a Hope R2i up front, which is great!! rear I have a moon meteor, which I rate for side vision, but battery is limited and an iris 180 lumin. Nice and compact, bright, not so good for side vision. Lights I haven't liked, moon front light, can,t remember the model and a nite rider front. After seeing the Hope's 1000 lumins, made me a little doubtful about their claimed 900 and they both stopped working after a month. The Bright Eyes line is easily the best i've ever seen. They're mountain bike lights that are durable and fully water proof. For the commute at night you need a very bright light to see through the shadows caused by streetlights, 200-400 lumen lights just arent actually very safe. The cheapest in their line I only paid 40 bucks for, use it on the lowest setting and with the free diffuser lens for more width and it makes other lights I had used seem completely useless in comparison. It has an external battery so it can still provide 600 lumens on low for hours, and my only issue is it seems to phantom load power when plugged in while off so I just unplug it until night time

I like the Cygolite brand too, for a front light. As you've noted Cygolite uses a solid mounting system instead of some form of rubber band. One of the main reason I chose Cygolite. Which line of Cygolite front light do you like? The sealed, enclosed rechargeable battery Metro line (which may be waterproof); or, the Expilion with interchangeable rechargeable batteries? For about 5year now I've using their Expilion 410 & 500 in tandem. They are two very different lights: the 410 is a narriw beam, while the 500 is a fairly broad beam; it is hard to think of them as from the same manufacturer give the beam difference. Also, find this maximum output give me the best light duration from their "standardize" size of battery, any higher output & I'd need more batteries. My usual setting is low with the broad 500 beam (~100lumens) and the narrow beam 410 on medium (~250lumens). I find this low amount of lumens works well on the road when the night is dark (without street lights or traffic headlight glare / but I've yet to find a light output for wet conditions). When more light is needed I have the battery power to turn up to 900lumens on any construction area or porthole filled road section.
