Undoubtedly one of the best things about this film is the room it has left for potential growth, for both Batman and Bruce Wayne. It isn't a character arc we've seen done before on the big screen. Bale went straight in as the charasmatic playboy. This is more gradual and makes more sense to me. It's exciting.

The most important moment in this movie is when Bruce hears one of the Riddler's henchmen use his signature line, "I'm vengeance". That is the moment Bruce realizes that he can't be JUST fighting for vengeance as The Batman, but also needs to be a beacon of hope as Bruce Wayne. I thought this was a perfect portrayal of Bruce when he's first starting out and hasn't realized how to use his Bruce Wayne persona for good yet.

I can't get enough of how perfect his casting is, not just as the Riddler, but as a grimdark version of Frank Gorshin's Riddler straight out of the '60s. Paul Dano's resemblance to a young Frank Gorshin is uncanny, and it's only when the Joker puts a sense of humour in him that you start to hear Gorshin's iconic, completely unhinged Riddler laugh start to filter into a character who was angry and humorless all the way along. Everything about this movie, from the young Riddler's ongoing, incomplete growth into the mad laughing Riddler we know, to Batman's recognition that he still needs to develop Bruce Wayne into a fully-fleshed-out cover identity, to his obvious still-present fear of heights, makes this feel like an early-stage Batman that nobod, not even Year One, has given us before. It makes me excited to see more of this, which I guess is how you get a sequel greenlit. Well done on all accounts.

One of the best comic book movies in general. A lot of common audiences won't like this because it isn't the non stop CGI action cringe fest, but movies like this, Logan and Joker are what the genre needs. As far as Bruce Wayne is concerned (most popular criticism of the movie), Pattinson did mention that Bruce himself has an arc for 3 movies. Pretty sure we'll see the Philanthropist side of him in the sequel.

This movie was just a couple of scenes short of being classified as a "horror" movie, rather than a "superhero" one. The Riddler was just a fancy "serial killer," going around and killing public figures on some twisted path of vengeance. And the overall dark tone of the movie's appearance was also very reminiscent of a slasher flick. This Batman wasn't the best (I'll still love the Nolan trilogy most of all), but it was definitely DIFFERENT! In the same way that "The Joker" was different. Honestly, WB should have slapped a "Black Label" on this film, and they would have gotten away with it.

I think a lot of the comments have addressed this already but this is an early version of Batman (Year 2) and at this point Batman and Bruce are indistinguishable; Being Batman is all Bruce cares about and its deeply impacted his personal life which is practically nonexistant. This Bruce is also still confused about his role as Batman and basically just goes out every night to take out his grief on criminals and as we know his perspective changes by the end of the movie on what Batman needs to be. Riddler was right saying that Batman was the real him, the Bruce persona will come later. If you guys havent already I recommend you read some of the comics that inspired the movie like Year One, Long Halloween, Batman: Ego, No Mans Land. I also recommend Batman: Black Mirror which is Dick Grayson not Bruce, and Court of Owls too just because theyre both good reads.

14:03 I totally get *Nikki's* criticism at this point. However, as you said, he's only been _Batman_ two years. And as you saw in the film, his singular goal of being _"Vengeance"_ was not working. In fact, he believes it helped create _The Riddler.¹_ It had people afraid of him that shouldn't be (such as the guy he saved from the _Joker-looking_ gang, and the initial hesitation people had when he was trying to save them at the end). This film is showing his birth. He reaches a crossroad and decides to be _"Justice"_ (and hope) instead of _"Vengeance."_ And my guess is the picture is also telling us that his _Bruce Wayne_ persona is also going to be doing more going forward. And of course we see how his relationship with _Alfred_ certainly changes after _Alfred_ is almost killed. Great reaction, as always.😎👍 ··•🦇•·· ¹ ─ Of course they both have similarities (e.g., both being orphans, they both keep immaculate, almost manic, journals, etc.).

For Nikki as a reference to liking Bruce Wayne's personnality in the other movies. This persona "bruce wayne rich philanthropist guy" is created later on in the comics, as this is early between year 1 and 3 of being batman. later in the movie when the candidate for mayor says " you do nothing for this city unlike your father did" and Alfred saying you cannot be "just batman" and all... it's hinting at how eventually he will create this philantropist personna. This is very Comic accurate as Bruce wayne identifies as Batman and not as actual Bruce wayne in the comics. Think of it as Steven Grant from moon knight. An alternate personna to deal with real life people.

I learned my lesson with Ledger, never doubt a casting before watching the movie. And Pattinson didn't disappoint. First 15 minutes of the movie I already loved him more as batman than Christian Bale. No disrespect to Bale, he also was decent. But Pattinson's batman actually felt like he struck fear into criminals.

I can see Nikki's point of view on the Bruce Wayne side of it. She's used to the well kept, groomed, pompous billionaire side. This Batman hasn't gotten to that point yet. He's only been Batman for two years in this movie, so he's so consumed with living that Batman persona that he hasn't taken the time to come into being Bruce Wayne yet. Vengeance is his priority right now, and he hasn't realized all the good he can do as Bruce. I believe that in future movies, he'll slowly start to come into being more of himself, and the Batman will come out when needed most. Also, I need much, much more of Paul Dano as the Riddler. He was so incredible in this role.

A good way to describe this movie is “7even (the Morgan Freeman/Brad Pitt thriller) as a Batman movie” with emo Bruce Wayne. When cross-examined with the comics, it’s very much a Year Two style Batman. He hasn’t figured out his public/private life balance yet, his costume has strong body armor because he isn’t as physically capable and able to dodge attacks yet, he doesn’t silently take out half a gang before any of them notice, he doesn’t have Batarangs but the symbol on his chest is removable and he uses it as a utility knife, he’s very emotional, savage, and feral when he fights, and much more. He’s sassy with Alfred because he’s at a stage where his only concern is his mission and he hasn’t achieved the “Billionaire Playboy” image.

Well, that's simply not true. Batman Begins is outstanding, but it's villains, Scarecrow and Ras, aren't exactly great villains. Scarecrow especially seems kind of wasted because he has so little to do. Captain America: Winter Soldier is one of the best mcu movies, and those villains aren't memorable. Logan. X-men first class and days of future past. Great movies. Villains are nothing special.

Robert is my Batman. " he wants to save Gotham, and he does so by making criminals shit their pants. What it's not working , he said so constantly throughout the movie. In the story Alfred treats Bruce warmly but they still have a distance. Alfred genuinely feels like the humanity Bruce once had has been gone in his quest to stop crime. Bruce is just awkward he's weird doesn't know how to act like a person. For example, Christian Bale Batman was a version where he needed to isolate himself for a time to understand what he needs to do, what he needs to become, but he never felt alien. Pattinson Bruce, Pattinson Batman feels alien. The dudes desperate for some kind of relationship that's beyond beating people's faces in but he doesn't allow myself to open up" - Brown table

But I also think it’s a nice change of pace of exploring this side of young Bruce Wayne since we always see the cleaner side of him. Matt Reeves mentioned he wanted this Bruce Wayne to have that emo rockstar quality to him. Which makes sense for this Bruce Wayne and this world. So it’s all intentional. We’ll eventually get that clean, playboy Bruce Wayne we all know as Matt Reeves wants to develop these characters in the sequels.

The music is strangely reminiscent of "The Imperial March" from The Empire Strikes Back. The two themes actually share the same ancestor, a classical music piece that itself brings forth several connotations of evil and death. Chopin's "Funeral March." The somber, haunting classical tune first appeared in the 1830s and has since become synonymous with death and funerals, conjuring impressions of grief and pain which audiences learned thanks to its appearances in various media, most notably in early animations such as the Looney Tunes.

This isn't a Bruce Wayne movie; it's The Batman...a film about a vengeance-fueled vigilante that the city is afraid of, BECOMING a hero in the eyes of Gotham. The suave mask of Bruce Wayne hasn't been realized by the young, angry Bruce just yet. That being said, as far as Batman films go, this is easily my fav so far. Perhaps it's because I'm an old fart, but I haven't been entirely impressed with most of them to date, though I did enjoy the Nolan trilogy. One of my favorite blink-and-you'll-miss-it details in this movie is that the "adrenaline" Batman shoots himself up with is green, just like the "drops" that are referenced as a new street drug. Potentially laying the groundwork for Bane to appear in the future, because he gets his strength from "Venom," a green super-steroid which turns him into a rage monster.

I respect Nikki’s opinion, however the comment about Bruce having long hair and looking so disheveled in this version is how I expected someone with childhood trauma to look, especially since this is supposed to be a much younger version of Bruce/Batman than we are used to seeing. I like the previous Batman’s but I like that with Pattinson’s Batman, we will get to see him progressively get better as both Bruce and Batman.

That scene with the adrenaline always gets me. It seriously shows that fear of losing anything he cares about. It's emotional and badass at the same time.

I don’t get why a lot of people don’t understand that he hasn’t built his Bruce Wayne persona yet. Matt Reeves has stated this multiple times. And so many people the first thing they nitpick about the movie is they weren’t sure about his Bruce Wayne. Bruce isn’t even sure about his persona. It was done on purpose. He’s more focused on his mission and not caring about anything. That’s why you see he gets hit and punches and shots without any caution. And that was his whole arc in the movie. Realizing he can’t just be vengeance. And I feel like she was basing everything on the Bruce Wayne persona instead of the Batman persona which Pattison killed. Easily on of the best Batman,
