Conversation area probably. Just got offer accepted on a 3 bed 2.5 bath 2 level home. All yard in front handled by HOA, but I have a very small fenced in area in the back with patio. Wondering what could go there 🤔

I am working on a conversation area in the front(I have a patio in the back and a raised deck already)as I wanted to utilize some private space in the front that is shaded by our big Princeton Maple. I ripped out some ugly old bushes and we are working on leveling it, etc...

My grass yard slopes down to woods, and I would love to add mulched tiers - with maybe a rain garden - with plants with year round color that attract pollinators, and not need to mow the lawn on the slope.

If you live with mosquitoes I encourage you to consider screening in your area. We (in Michigan) use our space 100% more with it screened in.

@@sylviaskinner6849 If it is in your budget you should. I ended up making a seating area, a herb garden and got some pet chickens. I can read in the shade, do a little gardening or watch the chicks' antics. It's tons of fun and I use the space all the time!

Great Video Julie, We use a small propane firepit on the Boat, the aft cockpit is the perfect conversation area, 1/20th the size of a backyard but still works. At home we have a pond with a recirculating pump for the water feature sounds.

Hi Julie You look great. I love your suggestions and I did purchase a water feature from Amazon on prime day. But you will be filling up your outdoor space with lots of fun things for the girls. Playhouse, swings, inflatable swimming pool, Elmo sprinkler thingie, child sized table and chairs, small raised beds to let the girls garden. I remember all that. Luckily you will not be keeping any of it for very long. Except I kept the sturdy swing set which is still used. You only need a small fire feature for the family to have a s’more night!! Fun times ahead for you! Funny I brought orange in my home. Paint, pillows blankets. My floors are reddish orange so I just went with it to blend. I’m so glad warm colors came back! Stay pretty! 🤗🤗🥰

Excellent video, Julie! This is exactly what I’ve been looking for , and especially on Prime Day, I can take full advantage of renovating my backyard. My backyard is pretty much a concrete, patio enclosed space that needs some TLC. Any tips or suggestions about what I can do about the floors? I have areas rugs and some conversation areas, but now am wondering about the concrete itself. Thanks!

I have the same- plain old boring concrete. I added an area rug to mine for now. But I can also see stamping it or stenciling with a cool design when I find what I like Michael 👍🏻

Julie, how about creating a wellness outdoor oasis like for example an infrared light cabin or whirlpool, chairs etc? This would make an amazing video....especially for Toddler - Moms with a backyard garden who need a zone relax (like me) :))

What great input on yards! We have bats in the neighborhood 🦇and I tend to avoid being out when they swoop around (therefore no strings of lights and evenings out). I think orange accents 🧡and a water feature ⛲️are things I will add!

Great video Julie! I have a small yard myself. The outdoor spaces is something I have been working on for several years... Baby steps. After saving money for it... We added a raised deck with a cover. We have an outdoor electrical outlet we installed next to the deck so I asked for a string of outdoor light last Christmas... I hung them and it really looks nice! I searched far and wide for thick cushioned comfortable chairs with a high back. I finally found some through Lowes's and I swear they are so comfortable and even work for short people like me(and the cushions don't seem to fade much).. I got four of them(they come in sets of two and deliver right to your house) and 3 end tables and got a water fountain to put in the corner with flowers around it. Then. I placed several planters with flowers around it and a couple on the tables. I picked up a gas grill with folding sides that tucks neatly in the corner of the deck(ready to pull out and use) and tada! I have an outdoor oasis and conversation area. It is on the west side of the house so you can watch the sunsets... I also have a back patio that we put a hot tub on that has two tables with some seating around it. This is on the side of the house that gets the afternoon shade and is very private. An outdoor light is there that lights up the area at night. The people that originally built this 1965 rancher put outdoor electrical outlets and lamp posts with lights all around the house. We still added a couple ourselves. We also added a backyard lamp post out in the yard near the deck. It helps light up the deck at night too... We also use solar lights for pathways... They are inexpensive and you can place them around stairs, walkways, etc. In the front we are working on another seating area that is buffered from the street by a large Princeton gold maple for shade. It has an electrical outlet next to it so I think I will add another water fountain. This one I am trying to design for... The ideas you gave me I think will work. I am just stuck on using metal benches and chairs or plastic? Cushions or no cushions? We get harsh weather so I am trying to find something that will hold up to the weather... I am putting down screening and either using pebble stones or 3/4 inch crushed rock with pavers (natural rock or concrete pavers)... Still not sure... With the hot tub patio I used folding chairs that I can pick up and put away when the weather gets bad... And I throw covers on the two tables. I purchased canvas outdoor covers for my furniture on the deck for the Winter weather we get here...

@@youbetcha108 Yes. It is. Most of our remodeling has taken place in the last 7 or 8 years. We had to wait until we finished paying for five years of of college for our son and finished paying for our house and boosted our supplemental retirement investments... So now we have been having fun fixing up the house and traveling of course... So you can do it over time. A big tip... Start learning how to do remodeling... Unless you can pay for a contractor. Saves you a bunch... As long as you follow local city codes and get city permits.. II keep saying we are done, but I keep finding projects. I have said I am not building another retaining wall though. I have done 2 now. One 70 ft. Long At 4 ft. High(raising the ground level and installed a vynl fence) and another with a gradual slope at 60 ft long with heights of 1 ft. To 3 ft to 1 ft. That is just the outside. The inside we refinished our basement ourselves and added 2 bedrooms and a bathroom... Just some of our projects...I am getting too old to do this... But when you can't afford contractors let alone even find one who will do your small projects... Well you are on your own... Ha, ha.... 🤣🤣🤣

@@youbetcha108 You would be suprised at what you can do... We waited years before we could afford to do it. The kids come first of course. But now that it is done I have my very own art room for the first time(with a big egress window facing South and I get alot of light) and my husband has his own office and it is also a spare bedroom. And we have a third bathroom in the basement. I use the downstairs bathroom for myself as I designed it with a beachy zen vibe with restful beach foam blue colors and ocean side theme. I designed it to be very efficient with a nice clear glass curved door/corner shower to save space so I could have room for a linen cabinet and a bamboo bench outside the shower to sit on. I still managed a toilet and sink and additional storage cabinet next to the sink. The bathroom is only 6 x 8, but it has everything you would want in a bathroom. I also went with a higher end cabinet with a higher end faucet and nice decor/nice glass tile backsplash. The flooring is in a weathered wood look vynl to go with the beach theme. And I even installed a robe hook just outside the shower door... Added some nice soft plush bath mats and some art pieces and it is my little retreat. My artroom I designed to hold my easel, desk, bookcase, space for a cabinet(that I refurbished) that has heavy duty pull out drawers that are extra wide and deep with heavy duty hardware. It works perfect to hold my canvases, board, supplies... A small room(13 x8), but works for me and can still be used for a bedroom down the road as I framed in and installed a closet(I put in a door too) that I store larger canvases in and supplies in. I just installed a standard clothes rod and shelf in it. But what I did that was unusual was I build removable wall panels as the bathroom was next door. So if you ever needed to work on the plumbing you just lift up and slide out the panels to access the plumbing. When the panels are back in place they look like the other walls other than a slight seam that you can't see unless you get up close. My idea. So you don't have to tear out walls for repairing plumbing and then have to pay someone to fix it. 😉

Burnt orange is actually the only non-neutral pop of color my HOA will allow. I think accent pillows like that would look great on beige or gray cushions. Of steel, wicker or wood framed lounge seating, which would be easiest to maintain? I sat in a West Elm Porto chair and it's very comfortable, but the care instructions scare me a bit.

Depends on the climate you’re dealing with- all three work beautifully in Southern CA, but if you’re in a seaside locale- the salt air degrades all three. Lots to consider, so definitely do your research. I’m partial to wood myself, I love natural materials that add warmth to the outdoor space

Julie you look radiant! This was the most perfect video for me along with how to shop using Pinterest. I was trying to buy a seating set for our patio but was getting so frustrated looking on-line. I’m an in person shopper but couldn’t’t find anything since I live in a rural community. I live amongst farming land so need something made of metal that can easily be hosed down. After 3 weeks of looking, I was going to give up. Now, I have a new method to try! 😊. Does the directions for the iPhone work as well on a iPad? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I'm pretty much in an opposite situation than you. My yard is 3.3 acres, house tops a hill, long driveway curves around into garages on back/lower side of house..the only flat area is where cars park.🙄 However the area in front is large & more wide & level. 1 lg oak tree out front us where I hope to place a simple seating bench & shad loving plants around gravel/flagstone(?) area. Challenging to have privacy from street. Plan seating on house side (E) of tree. But first must rebuild wrap around deck...doing it in order is frustrating but necessary. 😉

I am trying to create an outdoor storage under the staircase that’s outdoor leading from my apartment terrace to another terrace above my apartment. Part of the storage will be inside my home and part of it will be outside on the terrace. Wondering about how to make it waterproof, aesthetic and functional. What I will be storing under: 1️⃣shoes on a pull out vertical storage, linen, luggage....this will be facing inside the apartment under the tallest part of the staircase. 2️⃣my art studio will be part inside and part outdoors...this will be high to mid section of the staircase. 3️⃣washer dryer..this will be in the middle to Low section. The entire staircase will be outside on the terrace open to rain. It will be against a wall on one side as I am planning to curve it along the wall but away from the lounge area that I am creating on the terrace which will be a covered area using glass, metal and wood as per the restrictions. The staircase will be curling away from this covered area and the lower end landing onto a sitout from which the last 5 steps will end up onto my terrace garden. The little patio will be a romantic sitout ( you sit on pillows and have your cuppa). And of course no one will be able to see the storage doors as they will be covered with homemade artwork. All storage will be accessible from the new room but will also be accessible from the terrace. We are on the TOP floor of the building (8th and 9th floor).

This is really a contractor/ carpenter question based on the materials you’re working with and your specific site conditions. Teak is beautiful and works for indoor/ outdoor applications. I would slope the ceilings and line with a waterproof membrane. Consider your building’s materials to possibly mimic the look

Julie I meant to ask you about mosquitoes what do you do with your outside areas during the summer. I get bit from head to toe. I’ve got the mosquito zappers along with fans that are high and low, they still get me. Do you have any magic suggestions? Take care❤

I had a HUGE mosquito problem in our courtyard which is why I got rid of all the grass and installed turf instead. That may not be your solution but mosquito spray helps- I like Bifen (on Amazon) amzn.to/3nTlDDH

I’ve checks the links the conversation area table and chairs are like $700, fire place is like 300+ , the water features are also 100+ and the list goes on. So yeah not budget friendly either you write in bio Everything is less than $100 and give links to things that are less than a $100.

Great ideas-- looking forward to your gravel path reveal! I was recently on the hunt for an outdoor dining set on a budget in anticipation of a backyard shindig for my husband's bday. I scored a teak table and chairs dining set for 6 (expandable to 8) on FB Marketplace for only $100!!! Arranging for delivery (60 miles) cost 3x that, but the set was still an incredible bargain for only $400!! I then went to work and added 2 coats of teak oil and the set is good as new! We must be on the same wavelength because I added thick B&W cabana striped tufted seat cushions and a B&W striped umbrella with built in solar lights. The bday party was a huge success. 🖤🤍🖤
