We've curated a list of what we consider to be our best headphones for rock music and heavy metal. These genres usually feature electric guitars, electric bass, percussion, keyboards (electronic, piano, or organ), and, of course, vocals. There can be many other instruments in the mix: think sax with Bruce Springsteen, flutes in Jethro Tull, or bagpipes in Korn. Vocals and lyrics also play a huge role in rock and metal, be they screaming vocals or more soulful or fun-sounding lyrics. You want a headphone that will bring out the best in your favorite singer's voice and won't let it get lost amid the instrumentation. When your headphone is well-matched to your music, it makes for a better listening experience.

Hello, thanks for this great review. What do you think about the Denon AH-D9200 for pop/rock/metal ? Good enough ? I need a close back option and Meze Liri is out of my budget! Thanks guys 👍
Solid! I have the old Utopias for everything but, if I can get together the coin, would like to get the Susvara
The Audeze LCD-X combined with the ifi Zen Dac/Amp separates is great for this 50+ year metalhead. I very much enjoy the detail, tight yet not booming bass, and smooth treble. When I listen to my favorite band Lovebites, it's heaven.
When cycling, walking, or for any outdoor activity, I use Koss KTXPRO1 headphones. Cheap, lightweight, and sound very good in all my DAPs.
Nice you and your video
My RS1X brought me back the joy of listening to music. And I listen to Death Metal
Haven’t even watched the video yet, seen the title and immediately clicked like. Been waiting forever for a video like this. From anyone!
I really enjoy the Nutopia and the Susvara for rock. If I had to pick one for metal, I’d probably go Nutopia. Surprised it didn’t make the list. I’d probably put the Susvara in the last video for classical and Nutopia here.

Nutopia as in Focal Utopia new version?

We typically don't recommend warm headphones for Rock and Metal. We like a headphone with top-end sizzle and a more forward sound, *but everyone hears differently!* The Utopia 2022 is a great choice for many genres. 🙂
I often travel by plane and long-distance train, are there any “close-back” models? Because the leaking sound will disturb those around me, especially when I listen to Deathcore! Thanks a lot!

For closed back recommendations for Rock Music we recommend The Hifiman Audiovana, Meze Liric, and the TH-900 MK2 for our high-end options. Other, more budget friendly options include the Focal Bathys, Focal Clestee, and the DCA Aeon 2 Noire. Hope this helps! I find Clear MG to be quiet shouty especially for rock. It's very tiring. I have put a video about it as well so i would consider something with more tamed treble.

I auditioned it against 800s and lcd x for metal usage and went with the lcd x. I personally found the mg to be less engaging. The 800s staging was just so huge it sounded hollow.

It's a little bit above $200, but the Hifiman Sundara Closed www.moon-audio.com/hifiman-sundara-headphones.html is an excellent headphone at it's price point!
Ironic ... I spent 3 years, and $14,000 delving deeep into HeadFi. I tried everything, but gave up ever finding a pair of headphones that did any justice to Metal music. ATH-M50 were as close as I came. But they were a bit congested. I tried Beyer T1, Senn 800s, etc. This was 14 years ago however

As a metalhead I appreciate someone addressing this topic. 1. Grado for Americana, and rock is amazing. Didn't like it as much for extreme metal. 325x would be a good introduction In their line up.

How about Final Audio 8000? Surely Top5

Agreed. Great for metal
Best for metal in my opinion: Abyss 1266 TC Fostex TH900 Utopia Final D8000 and Pro Meze Empyrean is good too Budget: Used Fostex TH-600 or E-MU Teak Hifiman Sundara Grado SR line is great for rock but not for metal Drop Ultrasone Signature X is good too for the money

Interesting to see your opinion on headphones for metal. I have been shopping and watching reviews but no one recommends anything PORTABLE in the budget category for metal. Earbuds are mostly underwhelming and uncomfortable and planar magnetic require amps. Not sure what to buy if nothing sounds great; might as well settle for anything cheap, unfortunately.
Abyss are best for metal and rock. Not so sure for EDM though.

This was a good planar summit fi option for me. That resolution while listening to ulcerate. My gawd.
Zmf verite should be here instead of susvara and fostex too definitely.

Recently bought Erzetich Phobos v2021, had to change pads to lambskin ZMF but oh man what a headphone it is for metal especially 🤘 it was best deal ever, guy wanted only 1000$ so for half price I got them (already had my ZMF pads), sometimes simple change of pads do wonders to the sound, now I only need some jfet amp to make them even better
Not so agree with the recommendation. The two Hifiman is not that punch. There are better choices in the market

Best earbuds for ALL MUSIC DENON PEARL PROS , they compete and sound better than my more expensive earbuds.
