Best App to learn German fast? Native Speaker Review & Language learning tips

Obviously, Duolingo is the best-known free app right now. I think it is a good option, if you can not afford babbel. But since it's free, there's obviously not as much development power behind it. And I'm saying that as a hardened debian user, so trust me, I already gave it the benefit of the doubt here.
But I simply think it does not offer great visuals, functionality or linguistic concept. You can basically get in your lessons and be rewarded by the app for just rushing through it. Some of the lessons are pretty weird and not contiguous.
On the other hand, babbel is expensive. Some people might find that motivating (I don't). However, it is pretty perfect for beginners. You will not find a more intuitively to use app out there. The UX is pristine and simple. Only the grammar section could be a little bigger (for the languages I tested).
Best app for learning German for beginners - Native Speaker Review
In my opinion, babbel really is probable the best app to learn German fast. Mostly, because it is pretty effortless, and it's platform-independent (can be used from any browser and also on your phone). Same goes for duolingo, but I find the UX quite depressing, to be frank. It looks like crap and yeah, that makes a difference. I personally like a pretty app over anything, because it motivates me if the UI is clean and relaxing instead of "web 2.0" style...
What do to after completing your course with an app? More language learning tips
I think, if you want to learn German fast, you really have to plan it out. An app might get you there half-way, as in the first 6-12 months (depending on your efforts) the app will totally be enough. But after that, you should look into other resources, such as simplified language books/magazines and videos, e.g. videos in slow German or with subtitles.
Who is that app for?
I'd say, Babbel is an especially beginner-oriented app (German language A1 level, European Framework (CEF)). Because at some point, you will just need additional material. It's not an all-in-one solution. But that's still super good and if you stick to the courses, you'll be able to speak conversational German within 6-12 months (depending on how much time you spend practicing).
About me
I make videos about German language, German grammar and German culture. So if you are looking for these kinds of things-hi! Welcome. Most of the upcoming videos are made for beginners like you. Advanced videos (slow German, conversational German) will follow soon.

This is my German language passion project. I just always wanted to do something like this. My main channel (mostly about minimalism and hiking) and my socials can be found below ↓↓↓ I don't really have a page for this project like a learning platform or anything, but if you have questions, you can contact me on Instagram, on TikTok (also German language & culture content) or in the comment section of course.

I am American (Californian, actually if that makes a difference). Our English classes combined literature and grammar. In the lower grades spelling was emphasized too (English is incredibly difficult to spell, and I still have trouble - and I appreciate the consistency of German spelling). I remember having a lot of grammar in middle school - even sentence diagraming. Grammar also was woven into writing practice.

That's cool. Thanks for sharing! I never would've thought that English class includes so much grammar. In Germany English was pretty basic... Tenses, SPO, gerund, that's it. I find the English adjectives most difficult. At some point you just plateau and it's really hard from here to native speaker level... But I'm not complaining... 😅

hmm... i bought the lifetime subscription for babbel and tried it for a bit and got discouraged and just watched the germanpod101 beginner words and would listen to them, write them down like " benutzen ist use" many times and try to use the word in a german sentence or two. im up to roughly 360 words in german so far. you made me want to give babbel another shot i think i got discouraged as i was super new to learning german. it also has helped me learn german by having a job where i can sit and listen, watch and write down german. i think its bad ass but im sure my bosses dont think so lol. i will for sure keep in mind of your opinion of the grammar part of babbel. i diddnt stick my toes much in the german grammer at the moment and focused on words instead, hopefully it will help me in the long run

I'm absolutely not saying that it is for everyone. But I would say it is pretty entry-level-friendly. I started Swedish from scratch and I found it pretty helpful. I would admit that it is easier to pick up where you left off with a book. But if you want to do that with Babbel, I think the way to go is to repeat vocabulary first for a while and then repeat the last 3-5 lessons and start over. The grammar part of babbel is a bit weak but they kind of drizzle it over the cake here and there. But you have to pay close attention and imo it is not redundant enough. So it comes down to discipline (and KZread, I guess). But as I said, you will always need a book at some point and I do recommend getting a dedicated grammar book from the start, to look up stuff. German is very systematic and rules are hard to remember but easy to find. I think with a difficult language the key is just more training. _Repetition is the mother of knowledge._ So if you have the lifetime subscription, just put the babbel widget on your home screen and try to do it 1-2 times a day. That will help. It's not nothing. I find it also motivating to go back to the beginner lessons and see how much I already know and how far I've come :-)

Im enjoying my learning thus far, and so many questions come up that i find to be kind of fun from a cultural aspect as someone gazing in. For example, is it abnormal for people to speak strictly formally to friends, family, and strangers? I interpret it to be akin to a well-mannered kid saying yes sir and yes maam in english. Perhaps im lazy and would like an excuse to use Sie tenses for everything though haha

  • @LearnGermanorcrytrying

    @LearnGermanorcrytrying

No, we don't speak formally with friends, only with figures of authority or strangers. "Sie" is used in some companies per default or in school, I have heard that not all teachers are "per Du" usually. But I don't know much about that. Anyway, "du" is very common in work settings today, unless the company is stiff as hell in their approach for some reason, but in Tech it's not common to surname people.

Hi! Thanks for the recommendation of Babble! I recently moved to Germany and just finished the Integration course and received my B1 certificate, but I feel that the course was a bit too quick (about 5 months) and I really feel that I'm only at an A2 level. I tried Duolingo but that app did nothing for me as I felt like I was just rushing through the lessons to get the dopamine rush lol. Babbel on the other hand has been wonderful, I actually leave my study sessions feeling like I learned something new or legitimately solidified my understanding of a certain theme. DW has also been awesome, they have some great lessons that are free!

Hi. I took a huge break from social media, incl. this channel, so I am only answering comments now. But maybe this is still useful to somebody watching later :) I have tried Duolingo too but it also didn't help me much with French. The vocabulary was too weird and situative. I like how Babbel keeps you kinda on the hook. I just wish the lessons would go up to C2. If you read this, it would be interesting to hear how your experience was with the app after a few weeks now :) I mostly use it for Swedish now, and I'm making steady progress. But it takes some discipline (as every language training does I guess)...

Maybe you're confusing the fact that Elementary School used to be called "Grammar School" a couple generations ago. Idk. EDIT: Since you're British I can't speak on how English is taught over there. In the US, we're taught grammar along with every other part of mastering reading comprehension and writing, and it's grilled into us. Bad grammar = bad grades. Big time.

In most cases, the reason for unsatisfactory results of learning a foreign language is a loss of interest in the student, or you have stopped at some stage of their training and began to "stomp in one place. Thus, the effort and time you have spent in the absence of new techniques will not allow progress in mastering the language. For example, if you spend your time and effort learning the alphabet for months on end, you will not learn to read, write, speak and understand the spoken and written language. Yuriy Ivantsiv in his book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign language" writes that you should not selectively stop at one thing, and try to gradually move forward, without skipping anything and not jumping, developing all the necessary language skills for you proportionally. Only then will you get effective results. In your strategy for learning any information for you, including a foreign language, you should adhere to the following principle: you made a breakthrough - mastered the new information, then you need to take the time to consolidate the material and bring it to automaticity. The next step - learn new material and master it, and so on. "There are no secrets to success. It's the result of good preparation, hard work, and learning from your mistakes." Colin Powell. Many thanks to the author of the channel for the tremendous work in creating the instructional video. Thanks to such helpful videos, we have rapid progress in language learning.

Thanks! I totally agree. You have to really immerse yourself, elaborate on the knowledge (old and new), repeat it over and over and use it in your life and head. I think nothing has ever helped me as much as being desperate and just having to rely on my language under pressure. But that is a total luxury. By now, I am learning two languages with Babbel and PONS (books only) and one with Mondly (and no books). The book + app method seems to help a lot, maybe I should make another video about that, because it really helps to stay motivated (it's more diverse and the change of medium makes it less stressful too).
