Best App for boat navigation - free marine navigation!
Best app for boat navigation - Is this the best free boat navigation app? In this boating app review, I test a free marine navigation app from Argo Navigation and talk about what's good and what's it's lacking at this time. Come see how this boat navigation app works and ultimately what I learned using a free easy to use marine navigation app. This app works on iphone and android and for many people might eliminate the need for a costly navigation device.

Can you save your routes to use them for another time???
Sir, thank you so so much for the Argo App information. I am new to boating the ICW and was very nervous about cruising around NC, SC and FL, even the Bahamas until now. I have been watching and learning from the Waterway guides and KZread videos, but you are the Champ. Thank you again for this excellent Navigational tool.

Very cool I have a spare phone now got a plotter
Really well done, thank you very much. We like to try out new water and an app like this allows for a much more enjoyable trip. More time enjoying the trip and less time figuring out best routes to and from makes for a much better day on the waters. Kudos to you Wayne !
Ive been using this for guidance on TIMS FORD LAKE in TN although tit doesnt givd much infofor our lakes it does track us and I wont get lost. Awesome! Thanks
Love this video... keep up the great work 💪
I grew up in Southern MD (Piney Point-St. Georges Island area), one thing I learned is the water can be very shallow and you have no idea, thats why the ole Bay sank a lot of ships! Now in Texas, I hope this works well for our lakes
Great review, thanks for the information.
Thanks. I will try this tomorrow.
enjoyed your review. I'm a few miles south, below Chesapeake Beach near Breezy Point Marina. i wish this was available 10 years ago. i had a 2462 Bayliner and used Loran and GPS for areas around the Choptank River. Boat is no longer and i have a canoe and run the Patuxent or the bay on calm days. This will be a help. Thanks.
Crazy I watched this video and I was literally boating in the same spot Saturday
Gonna try it for sure
definitely will give that a try real soon....thanks

Nice - I had an Apple QuickTake 100
Awesome downloading it now
This would be great to plug into a larger screen say a portable 15" screen. I just down loaded it and it's tough to see while you are trying to boat.
Can you put in gps coordinates to take you to an off the coast destination?
Does it give bearing or heading numbers ?
Thanks so much for the information Wayne. I'm new to boating next season so I'm looking for anything useful to help me navigate the Chesapeake Bay. There are only a handful of restaurants that I plan to frequent in the first year or so.

It's great for those trips! I can plan our trip at home and tell my wife how long it will take us to get to our destination.
Does the app ever display the course you are to steer ?
Does this work in the Bahamas or USVI, etc?
What does the red, green, and yellow mean on the route?!
When will this app be available in Europe ?
it's not showing depth data and markers for my lake (lake moultrie, sc)
Been using it for a month. There some differences with depth between the app and the Garmin. Deep in the Sebastian River I cant get depth but not an issue with the Garmin now. Look forward to a landscape mode.
@WayneTheBoatGuy

I think it's main purpose is to keep us from running aground and knowing the best path (course) to take so that we don't end up in shallow water.
@RTerrence

@@WayneTheBoatGuy The problem with that is auto route assumes mean low water so you only get routes based on low tide. Where I take my boat there are short cuts I can take at high tide. It would be better if the app did its calculations based on what the tide was at any given time.
Wayne always have redundancy. I spent a lot of time on the " High Seas " before GPS. I now own a cruiser in the Chesapeake Bay area. You can still lose signal. 😮
When setting the draft, should I account for the prop and lower unit of my outboard motor since they extend below the hull?

I set mine with a foot buffer so that under most circumstances I am ok. Keep in mind the course plotting uses the data from the charts and not ‘real-time’ data.

Looks like a promising app but its really weird that i cannot install it on a Pixel 7 in 2024.... Pixel is the OG of Android phones so if it isnt compatible with that what is it with?....
where's the bearing and heading info?
is the depth difference with your boat and app because the app is subtracting your boats draft? seems like that could be the difference between them.
@WayneTheBoatGuy
2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's that sophisticated. The data they display is from the nautical charts. And I think the charts lean towards showing depths at low tide. So if the paper chart reads 6 ft so will the app.
Can they get it for the Uk 🇬🇧
We love your videos. They are very informative and in some ways inspirational and encouraging. Are you still using the Argo navigation App? Would you still recommend it over other navigation apps that you've tried?

Thank you! Yes, I still really prefer Argo because it does exactly what we want it to do in our area. When we pick a destination for the afternoon, it lets us know how long it will take us to get there at the speed we typically travel - before we even leave the house!

Nice video. Did the app send you on the wrong side of the buoy, or it recognizes it?
@WayneTheBoatGuy

Yeah, that was the issue that I found. The app uses the NOAA depth points and there was an issue with how that area was measured by the NOAA and the way the app calculates things. There were no depth measurement taken close to that marker.

Good question, but I don't think so. I think this app is designed for people who don't venture too far out - or at least out of cell range.
Curious, 12 ft of water shown by boat depth-sounder/ transducer, yet app says 10 ft. Isn’t the depth found under boat by the transducer more reflective of tide than app.
@WayneTheBoatGuy
10 ай бұрын
The app uses published depth chart data and not actual measurements. The chart data is based on low tide.
On the return, were you required to re-enter boat draft? Maybe you didn’t, or maybe the app didn’t ask. Had that been disabled somehow? Just a thought. Nice vid. Thank you for posting!

Can you see where other users are? Or does it have any traffic details like waze?
@WayneTheBoatGuy

There is an option for boaters to show hazards and other situations and it will be neat to see results in more crowded harbors etc. I think once more people start using the app it will have more info to show.
@argoboating

Yep, you can see where other users are (as long as they are actively using the app). Traffic details are added by the users. So the more users in your area the more hazard reports, map issue reports, etc. there will be on the map

Hi Wayne. I'm using Navionics Boating, but it is not free. The map for the Mediterranean sea costs 20€ per year. Not expensive considering how handy such an app is.
Looks like an app that is use for sure. I downloaded and there’s no depth info for the Illinois River where I boat. Fail! 😭

I have noticed recently that because they use data from NOAA the mapping is essentially of coastal waters - which certainly excludes many popular boating areas. I know they are working on updates all the time and hopefully there will be options on the near future for our great rivers!

yes you can. But you can also use google maps as well. In your google map settings, go to offline settings, and you can download an area to where you'll be offline. This area can be quite big if you choose. Select that, download, then when you go offline you can utilize the google map without internet/signal. Been using it for years
I tried the app, I created 3 routes, the problem is on all the 3 routes, there are always some shallow depth of water in the routes, which will damage my boat if I follow the routes exactly, so this app is a disaster for me

Did you set up your draft and depth preferences in the app? If so, and it's still routing you in to shallow water please reach out to Argo and they'll look into it.
@tg3026

I don't believe you should rely solely on one navigational device, because the ICW is a living breathing system that is consistently being dragged by the Army Corps of Engineers where build up is. Everyday tidal water in and out you are bound to have shallow water, debris like logs, that are not captured on any device. Use of a spotter is very important. Please don't devalue a great tool. Thanks, didn't mean to be so long winded. Much respect. ❣
