In North America, you will come across countless cars with license plates. Some plates leave a good impression, while others do not. In this video, I review the 2023 standard issue plate from every American state and Canadian Province and Territory.

Animal + natural wonder + cohesive colors/font with overall simplicity is the way to go. Appreciate seeing Nevadas plate, very cool. I always knew the orange blob on WI was a silhouette of a sailboat but I agree there’s no context clues for it.

This was a unique departure from your usual content, and I really enjoyed listening to your commentary on the subject. Thanks for sharing your insights. Feel free to disregard the protracted comment that follows, but you inspired me to make my own lists of the best and worst designs, so here are my picks: Worst: Maryland, Ohio (either design), Vermont, New Brunswick, and Kentucky (Kentucky’s plate made my list of bad designs strictly because the placement of the state silhouette seems uneven and doesn’t sit well with my OCD) Favorites: South Carolina, North Dakota, Manitoba (though I agree with your suggestion to consolidate font colors), Northwest Territories, Alaska (specifically the third version), Rhode Island and Maine. Weirdest: Virginia (the slogan “Virginia is for lovers” rubs me the wrong way) and Yukon (any casual observer might mistake the gold digger for someone taking a dump) Additional rambling thoughts: I’m not a fan of either license plate of Kansas, but “to the stars” is a beautiful sentiment, especially in full context: “It is a salute to the free-spirited. To the rowdy. To the wide-eyed wanderers. To the dreamers. To the stars.” I would have preferred green font instead of red for Washington state, primarily because green seems more appropriate for the “evergreen state.” I really like Wyoming’s plate overall, especially the font, but I eliminated it from my list of favorite designs because the silhouette of the rancher and horse detracts from the scenic background. Since 1992, Alberta does not issue (or generally allow, as it turns out) front license plates. Anyway, thanks for sharing. Take my upvote!

Thanks for watching! Your picks for best and worst are definitely sensible. And good critiques in general. In full context, "to the stars" on the Kansas plate makes more sense. Another viewer pointed out how this phrase is actually on the state seal, so it makes sense that they wanted to retain some mention of it in their license plate redesign.

Agree the Arizona plate could be better. Utah is my fav. Michigan is going to be bringing back 3 more simple plates from the past including the bicentennial plate of 76 (to be released in 2026) That was a fleur de lis on Quebec’s plate 😊 Thanks for sharing this, enjoyed it!

Thanks for watching! I really like how those 3 Michigan plates look! It'll be good to see them on the road at some point.

I live in Kansas. The state seal says "ad astra per apsera" which means through hardship to the stars. The new plate (which I do NOT like) simply says "to the stars" so that's where that comes from. I used to like the older Oklahoma tags that said "Oklahoma is OK". Loved this video, by the way! Great idea!!

Thanks for the background! I get it now- it's a nice phrase. I also like that "Oklahoma is OK" design much more than the current one. The "Native America" one with the insignia from the state flag might be my favorite, though.

Tennessee's license plate hearkens back to those used in the State in the 1950s. Back then, the plate was not rectangular. It was in the nature of a trapezoid, similar to the geographical shape of Tennessee
