I purchased amboss and the first approach that I have was overwhelming, but I’m agree with you about all the integrated tool that the platform has to offer. To me I also have usmle rx and as you said on the video wasting time looking to many resources can be catastrophic on the journey on the steps but to me I think you need to take a few hours dissecting the content on amboss to get used on the platform.

First! Can you make a video on how you would go about learning for med school in house lecture exams? Imo, question banks are important but what would your schedule look like in trying to get LEARN the material from lectures (without taking notes, in reference to your step 2 video) and then doing question banks? I haven't seen a video fron you specifically talking about dealing with lectures so I am very interested to know your approach. I've seen you whiteboarding in some videos. Is that your approach to lectures...but what about not taking any notes? Thank you!

Hi Santiago! I just found your channel and realized you are a medical student in Colombia too! I wanted to ask you how can I use AMBOSS but orientated to the basic subjects of medicine? ( I'm currently in second semester at UNAL) I find the USMLE approach really appealing but since I will be taking the test in a few years, I would like to focus and use the platform mainly for basics (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, pathology). Thank you so much and I love your channel!! Ps: those USMLE scores are astounding, congratulations! I really hope I can get those scores too

Hey Daniel! To start I’d suggest using mostly the library (you can buy it without the qBank, a you can save quite a few bucks). Try to read all of the topics you’d be reading anyways with it. That’ll give you a good grasp on the subjects and help you start with the right foot once you get serious with your prep. But do a 5 day free trial before buying it to see if it actually fits your needs or not

Excitement is the more practical synonym for happiness, and it is precisely what you should strive to chase. When people suggest you follow your passion or bliss, they are in fact referring to the same singular concept: excitement. The question you should be asking isn’t “what is my passion” or “what are my goals” but rather “what would excite me?”

Hola, Santiago!

Great video- When questions are poorly written it makes them particularly difficult. LOL! :) It also makes them less valuable for practice as the real exam questions are not poorly written. This is particularly important for those with English as a second language. In addition, no current Q bank explains how a question is to be done, nor the concepts involved. Providing more statistics, graphs, data, explanation, and references is a great marketing tool for medical students and this is the approach of all of the major Q banks. Information/data is a magnet for a medical student's eyes. Students typically do not know where and when to draw the line and stop, hence they waste a great deal of time. Q banks that provide more only encourage this. As an example, I have a neuro H&P note written by a student that is three pages long, while a note written by a Chief Resident on the same patient is 1/3 of a page long. Training your information filters for relevance and pertinence (index of suspicion) needs to begin day one, and the explanations and references in the Q banks do not direct you on that, in fact the more verbose they are the worse they are at directing you in that way. Often students are frustrated by how little information they are provided in a vignette, or how it is provided. Most often they think it is designed in some way to fool them. That is definitely not the case on USMLE, but it is true in some commercial Q bank questions. Ask yourself why you are given certain information while other information is not given. The answer to that will reveal how you are being tested on medical thinking more than your possession of knowledge. While some seem to feel information and memorization is the challenge and the point, it is not. You are expected to have the knowledge, that's why your school certifies you to take USMLE (you passed their exams), you you are tested more on understanding it and using it. In addition, looking up information is a skill to be developed. I find frequently that students, left to their own devices, don't know what to look up to understand what is in a vignette they are reviewing. Frequently it is a single word and they don't realize that. They will study everything the Q bank provides, as well as their review book, and some medical web site, then com back and still not understand what is in front of them in the vignette. I have seen this frequently even in top performing students. I call it dilutional study. It is exacerbated by Q banks that provide "more". It's easy to spot when pimping a student or resident. Ask them a question, the length of their answer is proportional to their ignorance, they may know information, facts to regurgitate, but their understanding is poor. The longer their answer and the more information it contains, the less credit they get for their response. I will usually ask them "What is the most important/relevant thing you said?" to give them a second shot. The one that answers with a single word or short phrase understands the most. The one that says "I don't know" either lacks confidence or is simply honest, if honest they should have answered with an applicable concept they understand (concepts trump knowledge every time), so zero credit. If they lacked confidence they need encouragement, but that's another matter. Question (clinical vignette) based (case based) learning should begin on day one of medical school, not just for exam preparation. Classically I see numerous KZreadrs explain the concept of "X" (some physiology, pathology, disease, etc.), and they present only facts to be memorized and no concepts at all. I feel they may not actually know the concept, or even what a concept is vs information. They do not describe how to use concepts to answer questions about things you have never read about or seen before, nor have any applicable facts memorized. Frequently, the masses will want to follow some particular student's methods because it is working for them, while that person may have very different aptitudes. This used to apply just within a school where top students would sell their notes, now with the internet it has simply exploded. People will often follow a student (non-expert) like zombies. They are blindly following anecdotal evidence, an individual's personal experience, and that's concerning when considering those followers are going to practice evidence based care. Maybe this is why today we see too many doctors advocating, and even selling, non-evidence based therapies...and in some cases facing criminal charges over it. Patricia Derges? If you have to ask "What is high yield?" you aren't understanding medicine. As a medical student, you need to train to teach yourself efficiently, become an efficient self-correcting learner. A question should be done in a minute and 15 seconds or less, certainly no more than a minute and a half. Review of the question should take similar time. Think about that. Yes, even the "difficult" ones. Think about when you are a resident working 80 hours per week, studying and preparing for your cases, while still studying for exams and doing questions every day. More resources, expanded resources, or more in depth resources are not necessarily better, in fact they can be worse if you do not develop the skill to use them efficiently.

Late comment, but do you think AMBOSS can be used to also study for in-house lecture examinations? Someone already commented on asking if you can do a video on how to study for in house lecture exams in med school (I second this please make a video on it when you can!), but do you think AMBOSS is a good way to at the very least have a decent question bank to study from, and maybe learn the content in addition? Sorry, I’m just so bogged down by the vast number of resources out there and so little money in my wallet lol. Between B&B, UWorld, Pixorize, Sketchy, and now AMBOSS I’m completely lost on which ones I should prioritize on!

Santiago, what do you think of amboss' "attending tip" feature? I've realised sometimes I click it and it only serves as reassurance that my mental pathway was correct but at other times, it totally "ruins" the question because it unveils the way the question was trying to trick you. I would like to know your take on this. PD: thank you for sharing your amazing wisdom in your videos. I think you have la cabeza bien amueblada ;)

Hey, there's not an option to purchase only the Qbank. Because it's interconnected with the rest of the platform, it's an "add-on" in addition to the normal platform membership.
