    Scuds are a great addition to an aquarium. I feel like if you have an established tank, scuds will thrive and coexist with most nano fish. Ideal clean up crew!

    That has been my experience as well. If there are nooks and crannies for them to hid in, you can get a little colony going in an aquarium and it will look immaculate.

    I tried to set up a snail nursery in an established one gallon sorta eco tank (pickle jar) with Daphnia, Cyclops, locally collected Scuds and associated critters. The black rams horn snail laid eggs, the eggs hatched, the baby snails disappeared. Hmm. There are obviously several varieties of Scuds from what I've heard and read. Some ravenously eat plants, some don't. The ones I have don't eat plants as I've got a couple small ones in the small tank, however, I feed them with plant trimmings from my other tanks which they eat but after the trimmings go soft. I also feed them green water from outdoor rain barrels and a light layer of algae that tries to grow on the tank's sides as a result of direct sunlight. Now I see them attacking the tiny snails ... hmm, guess I'll have to set up another snail nursery. BTW, several of the fish I have also love newly hatched snails, that's why I'm setting up a snail nursery, without fish and without Scuds.

    I can't tell which one really wins, but I would say scuds are the best cleaners overall because they not only eat algae but almost everything undesirable, including detritus, dead shrimp, dead snails, etc. Speaking of snails, I think the snails were partially responsible for cleaning the scud tank. You didn't mention them! They are good too. So are shrimp. And isopods. And dwarf sucker catfish. Even seed shrimp.

    Scuds for the win. I kept amphipods in my saltwater tank for algae control (garden tank, no fish in it). They are fascinating to watch as they stake out territories & make homes. My endlers ate all my freshwater scuds & I need to replace them one of these days. I did find that my saltwater scuds ate my tiny zoanthids & my freshwater scuds periodically ate my bladder snails.

    Thanks for sharing Dan. WOW they made quick work of riding the algae! What would you recommend if anything for new born fry tanks? I have baby guppies and angelfish that I'm weekly scrubbing algae off the glass for the past 2 years.

  • @DansFish

    @DansFish

    4 жыл бұрын

    Personally, I LOVE algae in fry tanks because it offers grazing surfaces and helps keep the nitrogenous chemicals in check. However, I've raised lots of baby fish with both scuds and ancistrus plecos. As long as the fry are free swimming and fully mobile, you will probably be okay with either. I suppose their is a chance they could get sucked up if they sleep on the bottom, but, in general, I think both species are fine with fry.

    @@DEXTER-TV-series Nope I have a very small strain of amphipod. They're basically dwarf amphipods and shouldn't be a threat to any of my healthy fish. The tank has been set up with ember tetras and amphipods and is heavily planted. No dead fish so far. I can imagine the amphipods eating eggs, fry and dying fish though. The baby amphipods are perfect live feed for my fish. The adult amphipods are smaller than neocaridina but probably aren't on the menu for my tetras but my betta loves them. My tank has a bunch of amphipods, ostracods, flatworms and detritus worms living in there so my fish are pretty happy and have coloured up beautifully due to all the livefeed they're hunting.

    @@mitchl5220 @Nacho Friend Oh, this is very interesting! My big respect! I want to do something similar!!! A holistic ecosystem, an aquarium in which there will be not only fish, but also food for them and there will be those who recycle their waste and make the water clean without having to spend time and energy and water and money for endless water changes and fish feeding. Can you make some video about your aquarium, please?! :)

    So scuds are viable algae eaters? Id say having a tank with shrimp, aquatic isopods, and scuds would be a solid composition for an ecosystem, which can also double as food for the fish.
