Are these useful nowadays?

Anyone else thinks the Help desk and desktop support job is the most underrated in the IT field. In order to be able to answer the questions correctly you must have network, software, database good knowledge. Above all, the help desk is the person who solves most of the problems the normal users experience in daily basis. They deserve to be paid as same as security analysts, network engineers, software developers, etc.

Thanks for your comment A L. Security Analysts, Network Engineers, Software Developers, etc, and other Intermediate and Senior level IT roles solve more complex IT problems. Those roles require more qualifications and experience which is the reason they are compensated higher than 1st line support jobs.

that’s why you have to specialize in something! imo help desk is just to get your foot in the door. after that go into something specific that you like and focus on that.

If you keep getting better at Helpdesk/ Desktop Support then you can go from level one to level to to level three. Level three techs usually make around the same money that those other jobs do. Although level three can mean different thing depending on where you work.

I just wanted to say thank you! I got the job and I start next Monday. My interview was heavily focused on Domain and access control list. They first asked me what is the reg editor. They then asked what is a domain and what may be the reason a user is not showing in the domain. How do you add a user to a domain. The last question was what is an ip address.

Had the interview on Wednesday, this came in handy, one feedback the interviewer gave in a scenario was always ask user what error is on screen. Edit: Got the job 😊

Agree. That will at least help you try to narrow down the problem. In my experience working in school tech support, I usually have to ask the user if they have any error message on screen otherwise, they don't usually provide that information which can make it very difficult to remotely troubleshoot.

Thanks for this comment. I have an interest in true crime and I see the exact same problem solving process in criminal investigations. It's so common across various fields, including cybersecurity as well. I currently work as desktop support. Your experience in law enforcement will help you with stressful customer service situations as well. I don't know what area of law enforcement you worked, but if you can handle a domestic violence situation with professionalism, you have what it takes for this job as well.

Really good question setup however i feel some of them are more of network administrator role as i am one so i can see where this is going but it is such a fine line in IT its impossible not to cross it.

Hi Sasa, Good point. Job roles and responsibilities in IT usually cross over, which is why we tried to be as comprehensive as possible.

Idk if you check the comments or not but although a lot of these questions weren't on my interview. These questions and answers have actually helped me troubleshoot lol so it's not only an "Interview Questions and Answers" they're also troubleshooting questions and answers
