No dents dings or trauma. Refinished Lacquer looks perfect. A very good job in the restoration most of the engraving is sharp and clear. The little Besson stamp on the 2nd valve is the only engraving that is a little undecipherable. This is a player! The lead pipe is clean and true, and my mouthpiece seats in the receiver perfectly. Valves have little compression, but the action on the valves and slides is perfect. It's amazing that this horn has survived all these years. The Besson trumpets of the early 20th century were the first truly modern trumpets. The innovations in leadpipe design, bell shape, and wrap (the overall shape of the tubing and instrument) resulted in a far superior instrument to the trumpets of the day. Bach trumpets were inspired (or copied) from early Besson trumpets, and most modern trumpets closely follow the same pattern. Most modern trumpets are in fact close copies or clones of early 20th century Besson instruments. The Besson Brevete was a very popular choice for generations of Jazz trumpeters, and was played at various times by artists like Miles Davis, Rafael Mendez (the Olds Mendez was basically a copy of his old Brevete), Lee Morgan, and Fats Navarro. The Besson Meha was also a very popular choice, being a brighter horn more suitable for lead and big band playing, played by the famous Conrad Gozzo and others. These original French Besson trumpets are now collectors items, and command high prices. Unfortunately they were out of production. Serial Number 102601 circa 1934-49. There were apparently three different models: "Brevete” Meha, Meha without the Brevete designation. Brevete without the Meha designation. The original French Mehas are classified in two eras - prewar and postwar. The prewar Mehas (approximately serial number 90,000 and prior) are considered more collectible, although both prewar and postwar are eagarly sought after from a playing perspective. Serial Numbers Dating a French Besson Meha can be a real crapshoot, given the poor recordkeeping that occurred during and after World War II. This is especially true of the later years, as there are reports of serial numbers up to 141,000, yet the only reference point we have is #92,000 in 1947 (and who knows how accurate that data point is?)

Steve: I think you loved playing that horn. You sounded your very best on that horn. Your sound filled the horn and was compact The “G’s and A’s” were unreal. My teacher Roy Stevens played a Brevette his G’s and Double C’s just popped and screamed. I hope you kept that horn for your collection. WOW John D

You're right that horn sounded fantastic. Unfortunately I was moving and trying to save up for a downpayment on a house here in San Diego. HornTrader mostly you but that horn held its own with a worn out sloppy valve system....
I thought the Brevette had a .464 bore, the Meha's had a .460 & .470 depending....I had a silver-plated model made around '49 and loved it, sadly it was stolen back in early '88 and never found...sound great as usual Stevie

God I love trumpets. Espically Bessons I actually have one, Forgot The type but It sounds like it was made yesterday yet I think it’s from 1990 idk
My late father left a Besson trumpet which none of his children can play. The trumpet has an "A" stamped on the centre valve with the S/N "141872" immediately below it. There is then an oval engraving with the words "Besson Brevete" and a star in the centre of the oval. The inscription on the main body reads (I think) "50 medals of Honour" with an ornate capital "B" below it. Then "BESSON" with a star below it. Then the words "LONDON-PARIS-NEW YORK" with "Made in England". The instrument no doubt needs perhaps a lot of maintenance but it has certainly not been mistreated since Dad passed on. In fact, it has not been played in many years. In the case I have found 2 mouthpieces - one with the inscription "BENGE 7C" and the other with the inscription "Paddy Fitzallan P3".Can anyone shed light on the history and/or value of this instrument please?

Sounds like you have a vintage French Besson. When I bought mine new it was $600 back in 1973 and they have doubled in price since then. There's nothing to taking it apart and cleaning it etc but unless you know what your doing I would leave it to a professional. If your wanting to sell it I would put it up on eBay as a French Besson. Hope this helps.

A7ty34g Actually, what he has is an English Besson with nickel silver trim. Different horn than the all brass French ones but still great playing horns.
Use to have a silver French Besson Brevette in high school/college. It was a beautiful trumpet but unfortunately was stolen.
