My grandad was in Sicily during the invasion. The likes of Attila were left wishing they taken the easy way out when grandads brigade commander opened the prisons and let all their victims out. I remember him saying that while his unit had distinguished itself in heavy fighting all across North Africa even they battle hardened as they were wouldn't have the stomach for what the people there did. He said the things he saw done to the fascists just confirmed their guilt to him. Anyone who can hate like that must have a good reason.

To put it into kinder words than the person above me, the boy was either molested, raped, or both.

Easily one of THE most disturbingly unecessary scenes in movie history. Bertolucci's fascination in disturbing the audience with graphic violence, even if only implied, was beyond the pale. The assumption that they are immune to it or its impact reflects a mind of arrogance on his part I'm not sure I'll ever understand. That's not to say that this, or any of his other work, is a "bad" movie, only that the truth is wielded like a thief slashing blindly in an alley way instead of skillfully, like a surgeon. Violence like this *is* full of brutality. Even the slightest inference of it would be. Which is why filming it like this is about as deft as hitting them across the shoulder blades with a 2x4. It leaves them so stunned, the following scenes are all but lost in their recovery from it. Pity.

At first fascists proved more that once than are capable of these things. I don't know if people who usually say is unecessary to show the brutality in movie like this or Pasolini's Salo , have you people had fascists in you country? Or are you fascists undercover saying that things like that never happened? Things like that happened, even neo fascists abuse of under 18 years old girls even today... was on the news about 4 o 5 months ago. And then it's also a metaphor: the secret marriage (because they are hiding themselves in the movie) between bourgeoisie and fascism, this marriage kills the innocence of Italy, the innocent young italians... People who don't understand this movie have never really studied fascism, ok you have to be italian to get all of the things but you can imagine that most of the thing in this movie are from reality, the people are real, how society is show and described... 100% totally real. Bertolucci is teaching you cinema and history at the same time in this movie. You don't get it because you are probably american, and you study mainly your history I would like to see you, coming from a land with this history.. of an unrealized revolution with so much blood of innocent people, would you be able to tell this story without the brutality?

A morbid and unuseful scene, to make worse this character that was however disquieting enough...and from the movie to the reality, a moment useful to feed antifascists feelings in the '70, when the movie was in the cinemas.

This is a film about a society, and its gradual descent into murderous barbarism. How do you depict a society run by murderers if you don't show the murders?
