Some one else is doing a part, or just him?

steamboatdad Pretty sure that it's just him. The Hardanger fiddle usually has a very flat fingerboard compared to ordinary violins, so that the fiddler can play several strings at the same time.

TemperaMagenta thanks. I showed this to a local fiddler who has played one of those fiddles. He said it was certainly possible and likely. So, amazing.

It's one fiddle, played on two strings. He wrote music transcriptions for these tunes and a CD see www.hfaa.org

Correct. On a hardanger fiddle you play on two or (sometimes) three strings at the same time (in this tune it's only two); and then you have "under-strings", or resonant-strings (not played upon) which also add to the sound. Usually four or five of them. On earlier fiddles there could be only two or three of these. These strings are placed below the fingerboard and pass through the bridge below the played strings.
