Just seen that there’s a major historical series just started called :Mary and George. Set in the times of James I and showing a lot of sexy scenes in Ruff times, and with one of the guys from Red White and Royal Blue as the male lead, it’s already broken social media. I forecast this year as the year of the return of the non ironical ruff. It’s already been on the runways expect it on the high street within a couple of years. This video has been one of the few I’ve remembered afterwards. Thanks so much for making it!

I am more a "piratecore" gal than a "barbcore," but Sir Francis Drake sported a ruff. I am guessing a nice admiral coat with a ruff might be in the future of my wardrobe.

this is the first time i've found your channel and by the gods am i glad i did. Ruffs need to return! they only look "goofy" to most modern people because they're not used to them. there's been way goofier in fashion this past decade.

In Denmark priests still wear the same type of ruffles as they did in the 16th century. When my mom was a teen, her parents send her to a home economics school, where the girls actually had to learn to make ruffles in case they married a priest.

@@FantasticalFolliesCostuming It's just tradition. They haven't changed any part of their outfit since the 16th century and everything is still handmade by a special tailor. The cost for each one is about 3000$. Our church law is also from back then. I guess the reformation was more than enough of change for us.

The black full coordinated outfit is obviously amazing, but for the more everyday looks, the office chic and brewery ones are genuinely great. A+ styling. I unfortunately don't really own any necklines that would work with a ruff rn but I'm keeping it in mind for next time I make an addition to my wardrobe... I would absolutely wear a black lace ruff irl, so!

These where popular in the Summer of 1934. They were loosely gathered and large. They were called, "Lingerie Collars". Jean Harlow wore one around that time. 💄💎

I need my shirts to have a collar, but a lot of my shirts are blouses without collars, so I've been adding white cotton broderie trim to them, to create a simple collar like thing. I realise now how easy it would be to turn it into a ruff with a couple more layers or gathering. May have to try that now.

FINALLY!! I love historical reconstruction as much as the next guy, but it's so refreshing to see another person with an interest in bringing some of these concepts into modern wear! Normally I don't dabble in bardcore til it's time to work at the renn faire in the summer, but this has definitely made me start contemplating how to squeeze ruffs into future outfits. To be honest, the only things I want anywhere near my neck are warm & non-itchy scarf/shawl types of things or a warm kitten, so ruffs aren't my thing. But. I am 100% in favor of anyone wearing historical clothing or historical fashion inspired clothing as everyday wear because modern fashion is really blah. The smaller grosgrain ribbon ruff is a nice accent. And the black lace one with the Queen of Hearts dress is so cool looking, although I am betting all that poly lace probably got itchy. Linen has floppy issues, so I'm not surprised that was a problem. I did make a shorter linen ruffly bit to put around the neckline of my 1780s Italian gown & it was just enough. (It was also very far from my neck, since the necklines of those dresses are pretty open).

My next project will likely be to finally tackle my Nier Automata 2B dress & I have to consider the neck very carefully. I really want to try putting on ribbon ties and wearing it with the ruffles pointed down. And I want to make one with patterns. Like, I can see a blue and yellow polkadot grosgrain as the base with yellow fabric as the collar and then like little bees at the very front.

Frills are apparently in fashion this year so it is definitely the time to bring back the ruff. Loved the video! BTW my favourite look was the denim jacket. Which surprised me. But as you said, structured jackets really seemed to work well.

As I wore Regency dresses on the picket line numerous times last summer/fall, and even wore my Elizabethan kirtle for a couple of pickets, I don't think I'd have an issues wearing a ruff in public. My smock has a high ruffled collar with some blackwork-esque embroidery. I think I'm more likely to get or make a ruffled chemisette for under my Regency dresses, especially since I'm about to make a new one. Something to consider. Fun in any case.

I've been wanting to make myself a ruff for the past three years... you are not alone. I actually picked up an antique pleating iron specifically for this purpose. Thanks so much for the research trail to follow. Well done. The ensembles look marvelous. Let's start a trend... Apparently the theatre kids, when they're going complete period appropriate, will use large curling irons on their cotton ruffs (that's still damp from the starch mixture) to help form the waves. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

And no, you are not the only one who thinks ruffs are fabulous. Two years ago I saw a gentleman with the most amazing leather ruff at Pride - it was spectacular... Let's bring 'em back...

I have a ruff. It goes with my Elizabethan gown. I have ruffles around the neck of other regular garments though (organza chemisette anda swiss dot cotton chemisette), even if it's not a ruff...per se. Love the ruffles you had around your neck in this video but LOOOOOOOOVE your Victorian coat. I bet putting some sew-in buckram interfacing inside your linen ruff would make it stand up better.

YT doesn't like me linking, but if you go on their website it's pretty easy to find. I don’t know if I’d be comfortable wearing a ruff without also wearing obviously historical, masculine clothes. Today’s fashion tends to see most kinds of frilly frills as very feminine (outside of high fashion and sometimes piratey stuff). I worry that it would get like those dresses I kept after I transitioned, but never actually wear, because they make me feel like everyone looks at me and thinks ”womanly woman girl” or worse ”oh, so [name] was never really trans after all, huh?” and I KNOW fashion doesn’t have gender, but I still don’t want to wear stuff that makes me feel bad, you know? But maybe wearing a ruff with some slightly artsy stuff would work. The freedom to find masculinity in historical trends is one of the things I love about historical fashion/history bounding/etc after all. Like, I wore puffy just bellow the knee pants and tights for a play once, and that historical thing about men having nice big calfs? It made me feel AMAZING. Masculine and kinda hot in a way I had never felt like before. I’ve been meaning to bring that in to be everyday (or at least formal) clothes ever since, but it just gets put off. And I feel like people would definitelly think it was for a play or something. But then again, if people didn’t think so about a ruff… maybe. And maybe ruffs too. I loved the look with the leather jacket.

I agree, I think in today's society, a ruff can read very feminine without careful styling. But it's SO cool that you're finding room to play in historical clothing! And I totally think you can figure out some awesome ways to sport a ruff (or just historical clothing) in a way that makes you feel good and confident! Just gotta take the plunge and allow yourself the room to experiment. Because you have every right to wear what makes you happy, whether it's gendered or historical--or not. And if you are happy, that comes off as confidence to other people, and they're much less likely to question the anachronism. And thanks! I'd had a really fun punk look planned with the jacket, but the weather got in the way 😣 I guess there's always next winter!

Aw, thank you! It's one of my favorites! I don't know if you're a knitter, but if you are, it's the "Zelda" sweater from White Lies Designs, and the pattern's on Ravelry!

I don't think the problem was ever that people thought they looked bad, I've actually seen lots of imitations. The reason they disappeared in the first place was that they were deemed "un-enlightenment". The Oxford collar is called that because of Oxford University: an institution with close ties to the English monarchy. European anti-monarchists in the 18th Century adopted the neckerchief, which is more or less just wearing the ruff unpleated and unstarched. Also worth noting, the ruff never left women's fashion: it just became the choker. So we *do* unironically wear ruffs, technically. But the main reason why ruffs proper stayed out of fashion I think is that they were difficult to make. It seems like you've solved that issue by using ribbon. I think the main way to get rid of the political baggage would be to ditch the white color. Pride stripe ruffs anyone?

Ok, but the only real reason to wear anything weird is because you like it. You can wear a ballgown just doing chores about the house if it makes you happy lol

HAH! I mean. I totally agree 😁 Wear what makes you happy! And avoid the bleach if you're cleaning in that ball gown...not that I'm speaking from experience...~cough~

Ruffs were wearing money. It tools so much specialized staff to keep them up, democratizing a ruff needs a very certain hand to make it work. It fights with soft modern every day clothes, the Morgan Donner Tudor men’s shirt with built in ruff seems a better strategy.

That's definitely a great way to take it, if you live in a climate where you can wear an extra shirt underneath! It'd be HOT here in Texas, though 🥵🥵

White glue is cheap, acrylic matte medium is better. But spendy. Way better. Use either on a sheet of clean glass and watch the humidity, you want dry dry air. It still takes like a week to dry. Don’t dilute a lot, chemical bonds weaken blah blah. Never made a ruff but spend a decade in art school with materials.

Another "benefit" of using polyester is that it lasts FOREVER. Yes, quite literally forever & ever & ever. About the poly/pearls comment; please don't belittle people who value the earth & take its protection seriously - e.g. over & above their own instant gratification. I would have been glad to have shared your video, but your active promotion of polyester is irresponsible & the levity with which you treat the subject saddens me. YT & home sewers who promote polyester & those who churn out new outfits every week, can cause as much damage to the planet as the Fast Fashion industry we try to combat.

Here on Fantastical Follies, my aim is to make historical costuming accessible to everyone. While I value the importance of slow fashion and the preservation of the environment, not everyone comes from privilege like you, and therefore not everyone has access or the money to be able to afford those natural fibers you hold so holy. If you want to use natural fibers, that’s your prerogative. But don’t gatekeep and criticize others for using alternatives if that is all that they can afford to use. That attitude is not welcome here.
