Bern Steam Tram No 12 - City Tour - 18/08/19
Another most enjoyable excursion during The Swiss Bernese Oberland Rail tour organised by The Railway Touring Company took place on the Sunday morning of 18th August when Bern Steam Tram No 12 with trailer car (No 31) was chartered for a two hour tour of the city tramway network. No 12 and her sister Steam tram No 18 had worked the Bern network until being replaced by electric traction in the early years of the 20th Century. No 18 and trailer car (No 26) is housed in the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne. No 12 had been for many years a static open air exhibit outside Techorama, the Swiss Science Centre in Winterthur. From 1994, No 12 was extensively refurbished by a group of volunteers in Bern and returned to steam in 2002.

There is no question that the modern trams are superb, but this fine, machine in her smart livery is also well........superb.
What a great piece of rolling history!
It'd be a trip if the pantographs all lost power and this little gem could take over till they got it fixed.
Look at how clean the streets are. I wish we were more conscious about litter.

Honestly, you guys should start cleaning out that blonde baby who makes your country believe that the environment can deal with all the shit we throw at it. But I guess that just shows how America ticks. Don't give a fuck. About no one and nothing.

So true. What also is that people think it’s right to vandalize landmarks and such. Really ruined the Duke of Lancaster. I wish people could be more civilized.

Who knew there were steam trams? Obviously from another era but still aesthetically pleasing and serving a useful purpose.

Before that there were horse drawn trolleys.

Steam trams were really underrated back in the day because it was more common for the jump from horse to electric in the 1880s-1900s. However not every place could afford it so steam trams were still aplenty. I personally prefer steam trams (and everything steam powered really) over electric and diesel
What a beautiful city with fine architecture
Never seen a steam tram in operation before, only as a static exhibit. Nice whistle at 5:20!
I simply LOVE IT! LOVE SWISS TOO!! Greets from italy, Milan!!
I loved the shot upwards at 2:33 catching the incongruity of the steam or smoke rising past the catenary.
I think it is marvelous to see old but reliable equipment still riding the rails all over the world! Thanks for allowing a glimpse of this tour.
Atlas Editions made a very good model of this little tram and trailer. Quite a few of us have succeeded in making the models run, so its a treat to see the prototype in action. Thank you.
Wonderful. Great advert for a trip to Bern. Love the noise out of her :-)
I always wandered if they had steam whistles, amazing
Great Steam video , very enjoyable , thanks for sharing , Steve .
Nice video, reminded me of my own trip to Bern, a beautiful city. Thanks for sharing, it was enjoyable to watch.
I wonder how did the electric tram react to it's steam-powered counterpart

Great n first time I came to know there were steam trams were planning in Europe.Preserve this and all the best.
Beautiful.
It's such a beutiful little engine
Wow it's amazing 👍👏👍👏
I recognise the man talking at 0:22. He came over with the locomotive from the Brienz Rothorn Bahn that visited the Snowdon Mountain Railway.
Brilliant, I did the same tour in September 2017
Wow, wow and more wow! Couldn't think of a better way to see a city, wish we had steam trams in my country! Yes we have trams, we probably even had some steam trams some place(one private Railway in Sorrento rings a bell, LONG gone but possibly one of the tram engines is on Puffing Billy, converted into a more conventional loco, thats if my aging memory is correct) but mostly cable hauled back in steam days here. I'd find it rather scary operating a steam loco with cars, probably would not work with standard of driving in this country, they cant even deal with level crossings let alone a steam loco sharing the rd with them, at least our current electric trams have phenomenal braking systems.Poor fireman delegated to the back while mr driver has prime position up the front!

Bendigo had steam trams at one point from memory. Sydney had one of the largest if not the largest urban steam tram networks in the world
I've just realised that I was in Switzerland when this was filmed!
What a little beast!
Maravillosa costumbre de guardar joyas del pasado...
Thank you Graham for your interest. I believe the Steam tram only runs on private charters. May I suggest you contact Bern city Trams for a positive answer. - Pete......
Very rare thing to see.One of the greatest part of history.
Very enjoyable.
Excellent!
Fantastic.
We have a similar steam train in New Zealand, probably gathering dust in a shed somewhere.

How do the tram driver operates the rail switches?

They have a kind of rod with which they can change the railway switches by hand if they are not already set correctly.
Oh hey it’s Tobys’ cousin
Nice to see that this killer is the Dutch name that also drives there. Also on our muzeum line see www.stoomtram.nl ,, where there are also two.
