Bern Steam Tram No 12 - City Tour - 18/08/19

Another most enjoyable excursion during The Swiss Bernese Oberland Rail tour organised by The Railway Touring Company took place on the Sunday morning of 18th August when Bern Steam Tram No 12 with trailer car (No 31) was chartered for a two hour tour of the city tramway network. No 12 and her sister Steam tram No 18 had worked the Bern network until being replaced by electric traction in the early years of the 20th Century. No 18 and trailer car (No 26) is housed in the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne. No 12 had been for many years a static open air exhibit outside Techorama, the Swiss Science Centre in Winterthur. From 1994, No 12 was extensively refurbished by a group of volunteers in Bern and returned to steam in 2002.

So true. What also is that people think it’s right to vandalize landmarks and such. Really ruined the Duke of Lancaster. I wish people could be more civilized.

Steam trams were really underrated back in the day because it was more common for the jump from horse to electric in the 1880s-1900s. However not every place could afford it so steam trams were still aplenty. I personally prefer steam trams (and everything steam powered really) over electric and diesel

Wow, wow and more wow! Couldn't think of a better way to see a city, wish we had steam trams in my country! Yes we have trams, we probably even had some steam trams some place(one private Railway in Sorrento rings a bell, LONG gone but possibly one of the tram engines is on Puffing Billy, converted into a more conventional loco, thats if my aging memory is correct) but mostly cable hauled back in steam days here. I'd find it rather scary operating a steam loco with cars, probably would not work with standard of driving in this country, they cant even deal with level crossings let alone a steam loco sharing the rd with them, at least our current electric trams have phenomenal braking systems.Poor fireman delegated to the back while mr driver has prime position up the front!
