Berlin - Symphony of a Metropolis (1927) | by Walther Ruttmann

The experimental silent film is the most important work of the German filmmaker Walther Ruttmann (1887 - 1941). He documented the daytime of the metropolis Berlin of the late 1920s.
At that time Germany had just recovered a little from the worst consequences of the first world war, the great economic crisis was still a few years away and Hitler was not yet a topic. Berlin was Germany's most cosmopolitan city. Together with Paris and London, Berlin was the cultural center of Europe.

Incredible how fast time passes... Almost 100 years already! Only 12 years after that film, the war will start and all the city will disapear under ruins. Every time I see that kind of images, I get so emotional. But in the same time it is fascinating. It is part of our history... Thank you for sharing this awesome masterpeace. I am really impressed!

Lots of German ideas from the monarchy era couldn't change with the speed of that city. Besides, the penalty for starting WWI was unbearable, nourishing radical groups on both ends of the political spectrum. A big part of the population wasn't sure about a republic and If this was a good thing.

This was the brief period of semi prosperity propped up by American loans after a crippling period of war reparations. There was still a fair bit of political violence on the streets however Hitler was trying to keep a leash on his SA thugs in order to appear respectable for the upcoming elections in 1928. The Great Depression of 1929 was the catalyst that brought the Nazis to power and what followed less than ten years after this movie was made was horrendous.

Scènes with children are very moving Camerawork is fantastic and the sequence of scenes is perfect.

A wonderful document of a time and place. The film-makers did a superb job. It's amazing how modern and sophisticated a lot of things were, not the technology we use now but nonetheless a highly advanced and organised society and surprisingly so because of the political turmoil Germany experienced in the 1920s - there were literally thousands of political assassinations - and the economic rollercoaster they went through too and would hit again in 1929. I see others comment on the destruction that lies ahead but it's worth remembering that this is not even 8 years since the end of the Great War when 1.8m German men died and 4.2m were wounded, the monarchy fell and their whole world went into chaos. The background here is the rapid rise of communism, to which Hitler and not moderate democracy was seen as the antidote.

"They were way ahead of the rest of the world" ?? Stop spreading stupid myths ! They may have been one of the technologically leading nations before the Great War of 1914 - 1918 they lost with devastating financial consequences, and later fell back to developping nation status. That's what made millions flock to support genocidal murderers like Hitler in 1933, who as everybody knew was about to make another war on Jews and the rest of the world to overcome Germany's economic misery and urban squalor. Many of those without a future left the country for good emigrating to the US. The highlights of engineering you see in this video date back to the old days of pre 1914.

Actually the USA at that time was the most advanced country in the world in terms of how widespread technology was, and the standards of living. This was particularly true in ownership of cars, refrigerators, radios, and other machines.

I saw this film about 45 years ago. It's interesting what I remember watching it again. The stuff at the beginning, the technical stuff with the train tracks, cutting to increase the feeling of acceleration. Back then this seemed like real and useful information for filmmaking. To young video makers now it probably seems completely obvious. The light bulb manufacturing and for some reason the opening of the train shed doors. A lot of the rest of it just seems like the same kind of stuff like Dziga Vertov (spelling?). The takeaway? A shot is memorable if it is easily figured out, I don't know exactly what is happening to the light bulb, but I'm curious about what I'm seeing, not just seeing it. Probably if it is new information I can connect with something I already know. And perhaps (I"m stretching it) contained mostly in single shot. So Eisenstein took it too far. It works but.. maybe only for fatal violence. Some one making a movie now would probably want their shots and movie to be memorable. What's better than seeing something near the end that meant nothing at the beginning, but was remembered just enough to give the viewers an 'ah-ha!' Bad action movies are cut cut cut. But then there's Psycho. Did the chop chop chop in the shower sequence work? I think it did. But part of the set up was the shower curtain obscuring what was happening. What I conjecture is that in a violent situation that we survive, car accident, assault, someone shooting bullets in our direction (idiots, thank fully not aiming at me). There is at most one or two 'cuts' - shocks. You know where your heading and why, then cut another car heading right at you, then a utility pole, then you're upside down. So the car enters the normal shot. Jump to the utility pole, then jump to the car is upside down. (This was about 5 years after I saw Berlin Symphony). Tony Scott always comes to mind when I think of directors who cut way too much, not always. Just thinking out loud a bit. Thought it might be useful to younger videomakers. It's really difficult early on to know what works and what is just what lots of other people are doing. Also the directors and camera people who started in the silents? There's still a lot that can be learned from them.
