Berkley Vanish Fishing Line (Leader vs Mainline Abrasion Test)

Have you ever tried testing out the abrasion resistance between leader line and mainline?
I’ve always wondered what the difference is between fluorocarbon leader line and fluorocarbon mainline and whether one would outperform the other on the water.
If the lines are the same material and the same pound test, shouldn’t they work the same on the water?
I use Berkley Vanish leader line for most of my fishing rod setups and wondered whether I could get away with using Berkley Vanish mainline instead.
To determine this, I decided to test whether Berkley Vanish fishing line (leader line or mainline) is more abrasion resistant.

For the abrasion resistance test, I made an oscillation device that simulates fishing line rubbing up against a piling or some kind of rough structure.
The device works by rubbing coarse sandpaper back and forth on the two lines to see which line breaks first.
I attached the lines to two-pound weights which hung below the oscillation rod with the sandpaper - making the two lines taut over the sandpaper.

for 15# -20# mono main I use 30# mono leader and while I haven't had a problem I have always been wondering if I was risking losing my PB by not spending the extra money on high end leader, so thanks for the confirmation. Really enjoy your tutorials also.

Great video! Would be interesting to see some of the "stretchier" fluorocarbon lines tested. Coming from bass learning, feel like the stretch/give in these fluoro lines (used as leader) will help keep with just enough stretch to help keep fish pinned. Sunline FC100 vs Sunline Assassin would be a great video!
Interesting test, though I think testing the 15lb leader against the 17lb main line may more accurately point out any real difference as they are the same diameter 👍

I was wondering why you guys were using the Berkeley vanish fluorocarbon Main Line spools as opposed to the leader material. I buy it in the smaller 25 yards box of leader material. It is always held up for me but sometimes can be a little tricky to tie knots with because it seems to have just a lot of extra stiffness and memory. But always holds strong...

We were using the mainline to see if there are any problems with using it for our leaders instead of the more expensive "leader" line that comes in spools of 25 to 50 yards. This test showed that there is not any noticeable difference in abrasion strength of the leader line compared to the mainline which is a fraction of the price.
Anybody know why Berkley Vanish 250yd Filler spool has smaller diameter than the 110yd spool?

So if using the fluorocarbon main line as the main line, you don't need a leader?
