Bering Yachts for Science: Watching Whales and Finding Purpose

Owning a luxury yacht should have a purpose beyond travel or leisure. Bering Yachts founder Alexei Mikhailov understands this better than anyone. He builds yachts and knows their owners well: the question of choice, of having a destiny, an urge to be more than someone who simply possesses a nice and capable toy, arises for almost every one of them. To satisfy his own philosophical calling, Alexei has partnered with a fascinating group of people and organizations.
Yachts for Science and Mission Blue oversee one of the most captivating marine research projects in the Caribbean. With the support of the government of the Dominican Republic, they operate in Silver Bank, a state-protected breeding and calving conservation area for the North Atlantic humpback whale.
For five days, 13 people from 9 different nationalities lived onboard, discussing science, swimming with the whales, filming, photographing, identifying the whales, and collecting eDNA samples. Alexei, who would never miss such an opportunity, was onboard the entire time and returned with great memories and a strong dedication to continue these activities. Having access to an experience limited to only 500 people annually excited him greatly, and he wanted to extend this opportunity to other owners of Bering-made boats.
Our full displacement exploration yachts are designed for such endeavors, and collaborating with scientists creates a win-win situation. Owners have the chance to venture off the beaten path and enjoy unique experiences, while the research community can work in an environment of amazing comfort and service. The Silver Bank trip will not be the last for Bering Yachts; there are plans for collaboration in different parts of the world, from the Mediterranean to the Antarctic, and some owners have already expressed interest in participating in the program.
The Silver Bank expedition is the result of collaborative efforts involving the Government of the Dominican Republic, Blue Marine Foundation, Blue Nature Alliance, Wyss Foundation, Mission Blue, and the Caribbean Cetacean Society. Bering Yachts’ participation materialized through the Yachts for Science initiative, made possible by the Ocean Family Foundation, BOAT International, Nekton, EYOS Expeditions, and others.

Kudos to all involved in making this expedition happen-especially the owners for agreeing to let their yacht to be used. Looking forward to the future joint endeavors between Bering yachts and Yachts for Science. Maybe with these videos it will generate more interest and more participation by yacht owners. Maybe we can get more research done!

If I had money for a Bering 82, I would have as a requirement 6 months at least without going ashore. So many solar cells and a large greenhouse for growing food at the top and together with solar cells stand at anchor most of the time and use batteries and eating your own grown food together with fish and eggs as chickens are also a must. The technology is going very fast right now and only 2 years from now, salt batteries will be common in Bering, for example, I think. Alexi and Bering is the best company.
