My GGG Not Top 10: 10: The PowerPoints. This is soccer, not an HR meeting 9: The "Dominant Loss" comment vs Canada 8: "We have no player with UCL experience" 6 months after Pulisic WON it 7: The Leadership Council. Separating players from each other is the opposite of leadership and team-building. 6: Routinely being owned by Panama. 5: Losing to Trinidad. The very thing that nuked American soccer for years. 4: The "1-1" vs Uruguay. Focus on your own damn game, especially during a set piece. 3: Having a 28% win rate in competitive away matches. Wins over Grenada, Iran, Honduras, and Cuba. 2: Preemtively benching Gio before the world Cup, then TELLING HIM during camp and lunishing him for being upset. 1. The selfie. The utter disrespect he showed in that moment not just to his own players but his opponents is absolutely disgusting and was a fireable offense then and there. And that how Berhalter should be remembered. From the leadership council to the 1-1 to the selfie to ignoring his own players' achievements, hes was not only completely incompetent but an arrogant, disrespectful person who genuinely didnt care about anyone but himself

Dude the Weah card just shows how unprepared GGG was. I think it was Dempsey that pointed out that he absolutely didn’t even consider that possibility which is inexcusable. You have to be prepared for anything. You’re a national team manager you have nothing but time to come up with contingency plans.

  • @chrishenderson1262

The worst moment for me was just the general preparation and tactical execution for WC 2022. Whether it was excluding guys like Pepi/Tillman in favor of Morris/Roldan, including 4 RBs (of which he had Shaq Moore and Yedlin higher on his depth chart than Scally), actually using Aaron Long (let alone including him instead of a younger and better player like McKenzie, or having worked Brooks back into the fold), and above all the way he completely mismanaged Gio's role. The last one really gets me because I view his initial communication to Gio about having a "very limited" role as the event that started the cascade of what followed, and of course it was entirely misguided in terms of the benefits we've seen Gio add to the team only a short time afterward, and the fact that he was healthy and already back to meaningful minutes with Dortmund. I put all this at the top because it's the general error that I believe had the most impact, since it relates to the most prominent event GGG had leadership over. In reality, I think the ultimate outcome of our WC 2022 would have been the same, in terms of our group position and how far we advanced, even with a better coach and tactics. We'd have probably still finished 2nd in our group, and ultimately lost to the Dutch in the Round of 16. However, I think the performances in group play would have been much more convincing. Probably a win versus Wales and a more comfortable win versus Iran. Plus a more competitive game versus the Dutch in the following round. Those things are meaningful when it comes to preparing a young team for the next big opportunities like Copa 2024 and WC 2026. Our shortcomings at WC 2022 really set the table for what we have seen since, and thank goodness we've finally started the process to hopefully move things in a better direction.

I went to the game vs Columbia a few years ago in Orlando. I had been out of the loop with the USMNT for a few years at that point. Going from the Dempsey/Donovan era to that game was so hard. I know it was a big transition time but the tactics during that game were straight up terrible. I think at that time he was still all about trying to force someone into playing the regista role (Will Trapp at that time). I think he really was as bad as we thought the whole time. Early on we all saw the signs. You guys were one of the few who had the balls to say it from the beginning

My GGG "Not top 10" (first 2 are very broad, but encompass the depth of GGG's failure at evaluating talent: 1) Player selections in his 1st Cycle. Trapp - 20 caps, Lovitz - 13 caps, Roldan - 37 caps, Yuell - 16 caps, Lletget - 1K minutes in 2021, Acosta - 1K minutes in 2021, Long (post Achilles) - Played for USMNT before playing a single minute for his Club. Played him every game from June Until the WC started. Banished Brooks when he was a viable option at CB (Remember Ream wasn't part of the team much 1st cycle). 2) WC Squad - 4 RBs (Moore & Yedlin) over Pepi who almost single handedly saved GGG's job during WCQ (Honduras game). Playing Moore at RB before Scally during the WC. Starting Ferreira (his first minutes) against the Netherlands in Knock-Out round. Only added Ream to WC squad when Richards failed to recover from Injury before squad had to be named (Tim didn't play a minute in 2022 until WC started and played every minute @ the WC). 3) Telling Reyna "you're roll will be limited at the WC", before the tournament even started. 4) Speaking about "inside the locker-room" situations to anyone....even if it was suppose to be "off the record". 5) Adams at RB....just a dumb exercise and tactic that yielded nothing. 6) Love affair with the 4-3-3 formation, refusing to try or experiment with any other formation. 7) "Dominant performance" in Loss to Canada. 8) Favoritism of "MLS" players (Arriola, Lletget, Acosta, Long, Roldan, Bello, Lima, Zardes, Ferreira, Vines, Yueill) in first cycle over options abroad (CCV, EPB, Ream, McKenzie, Scally, LDLT) who were playing regularly in equal or better leagues. 9) Constant mention of comradery within the team and how everyone loves everyone else. 10) All the "Learning Experiences" from which he learned nothing. Always looking confused and disjointed. Making Subs too late to impact games.

    1. The WCQ roster selection. 2. Never winning away in concacaf. 3. Sticking with MLS lifers too long. 4. Snubbing John Brooks. 5. Never having a good back up formation like a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2. 6. His handling/playing of Gio throughout his tenure. 7. Snubbing Pepi off the WC roster. 8. Most in game management decisions. 9. Coming back after Qatar. 10. Not resigning after getting grouped at Copa, forcing the federation to actually fire is greedy 🫏. 11. Knowing that this clown (ggg) has made millions of dollars, and I will never make that kind of money.

I'm not sure if people will remember this, kind of an obscure one, but the 2-0 loss to Canada in 2019, It was the first time Canada beat us in 34 years (breaking records lol). I have no confidence in USSF to go out and get a competent coach. Not even a world class coach like some of the names thrown out there, but a competent one. When the USMNT failed to make the 2018 World Cup, We heard USSF say we are going to make big changes and get a great coach to get us back on track. They wasted 13months after that comment and ended up bringing in Berhalter. I have no faith in this organization. All they did was finally get themselves back to the point we were at in 2018. Only took them 6 years to do it.

Look at this quote from Crocker, taken from the ESPN article: "I just want to get the best coach possible that can help the team win, and whether they're from the U.S. or elsewhere, they've got to fit the profile, which is a serial winning coach, somebody that can continue to develop this potential group of players," he said. "Somebody that's got a huge interest and a passion for player development." He doesn’t understand the role of a national team coach. He’s not supposed to develop players, he is supposed to take the players we have and create a system to maximize their performance. A session with Greg Popovich would benefit these dumbasses. If the USA Basketball coach did what GGG did, they would be excoriated in the media.

The funny thing about the bounce pass is that in basketball they actually do teach that receiving a bounce pass puts the player in a better posture to make their next move. Either a shot, pass, or dribble. But how that becomes relevant to soccer and throw-ins, I'm not really sure. I don't recall a single time that GGG bounce passed to a USMNT player for them to immediately take a quick throw in. If anything, his weird bounce passes took him longer to execute than just tossing the ball to his players as quickly as possible if a real opportunity were there to take a quick throw-in. Most of the time his bounce passes were more off target than a simple throw or handoff to his players, and they probably actually slowed things down. Really I chalk this up to GGG's unusual obsession with other sports while he should be focused on soccer and tactics relevant to his team's goals. All his Jordan/Nike gear and shoes demonstrate that he's got basketball on his mind. I'm sure his opinions around bounce passes come from that mindset.

Worst Gregg moment for me was either that Copa America and friendlies prior to the tournament, 2nd leg vs Trinidad, Gio fallout, or that Pepi snub in the World Cup. Lots of terrible moments. Not gonna lie, I kind of defended Gregg prior to the World Cup. But the World Cup snubs and Gio fallout started changing my view on Gregg. It would been one thing if he was a good coach but with the amount of moments like what I wrote sums up his time with the national team.

At least the best part about Gregg is his shoes. I wish I had some from him.

I never saw or knew about the bounce pass clip, how embarrassing. That alone should’ve gotten GGG fired. Lalas and the other guy should’ve called GGG on it, instead of playing along and acting impressed. But they didn’t want to embarrass GGG

not defending failhalter or anything but the problem lies with who's making the decisions of who to hire. (or re-hire, heh).

My Berhalter not top 10 moment was not taking Pepi to the World Cup after Pepi had saved his ass against Honduras in World Cup Qualifying

My top ones are 1) not winning a road game in CONCACAF during WC qualifying. 2) Germany ass whooping 3) Losing the final game of WC qualifying to Costa Rica to back into WC on goal differential. 4) Colombia ass whooping 5) Netherlands ass whooping in round of 16 in WC and being so damn obvious that he was outclassed tactically 6). The BS Red cards that he allowed from Dest and Weah. 7) COpA America embarrassment 8) Bringing Aaron Long to World Cup. 9) Dumb ass bounce passing 10) Weak ass mentality of the USMNT under Berhalter that they never beat a team that was an upset.

I have got two. Thinking Aaron Long should be even playing at the national level. Constantly playing down to poor national teams like Jamaica and Bolivia.

I hate the entitlement of some of the people who have been "fans". They act like the fanbase shouldnt demand better from our federation. Just because we watch people on youtube instead of agenda driven anchors, theyll call you toxic. The most toxic thing we can do is continue to let USSF continue to operate like they have been

I'm more interested in why he got fired now. Most of us agree he sucked from day one, so why now? The coverage of the ownership of this team. When reporters, such as yourself, started pointing fingers at the real cause of the problem, aka Federation, they needed to react. If you all want to be good reporters don't let the big dogs rest. It's my opinion they will do their best to bring in another wgo bows to their will. Keep the focus on the ownership, make them own up the their narcissism. ❤

they are cringe worthy but calling out geo at a leadership conference is the worst show how of a character he had and how bad a person he is by the way ggg wife decided to stay with him so she knew that a some point it could be made public and the that his wife did not say hey Greg stop or the Reyna's may make it public makes me question her as well

Jesse Marsh was throwing bounce passes to Canada in the tournament, I do think it's fair to say it's often easier to catch a bounce pass in stride and that's part of why it's used in basketball. Does it make any difference from a managerial perspective, No.
