With the merger of the two cities of Bergisch Gladbach and Bensberg to form a new city of Bergisch Gladbach in 1975, new structures also had to be organized. It was decided to introduce residential areas, some of which no longer corresponded to the previous districts “perceived” by the residents. For the center of the old town of Bergisch Gladbach, the name Gladbach was initially chosen as a residential area. This occasionally led to misunderstandings about what exactly was meant. Therefore, the Bergisch Gladbach City Council decided on January 12, 1999 that the name Bergisch Gladbach should only apply to the entire city area. The council decided to introduce the name “Stadtmitte” for the previous residential area of ​​Gladbach. But it by no means exists as a so-called “center” only around Konrad-Adenauer-Platz. It is much larger and has partly acquired areas from other parts of the city. For example, the former district of Gronau previously went up to the “Driescher Kreuz”. With the reorganization, Gronau ended at the railway embankment. Everything that lay in between was added to the city center - even the Gronauer Wirtshaus.
