Love you Texas. Please don’t ever change
That's why i love Texas whit all my heart ,texas people are the best and hard working ,God bless texas and Texans.
God Bless Texas FROM JULY 2020
I was born in and grew up in Boerne but when i moved to Kendalia for 2 years, me and my mom would stop off in Bergheim almost every day after school on the way back home. I would always get a bag of chips and a glass bottle coke because that was one of the few places around there to find one lol
Nice to see the old American Traditional way of life still alive. God bless Mr. Engle. Tank you very much for sharing this.
This is great to see! I remember my dad driving from Blanco, Texas just to buy hats and his Wrangler slim fit jeans there. He once bought me a hair dryer there that I still have and still works. IT'S 33 YEARS OLD AND STILL WORKS!

Lol Ray... I still have make mirror with lights on both sides. Still works,70's, and a blow dryer. How funny. But not funny, the way VERY expensive things don't last these last few years...
Good store. I’m surprised you knew about Moon Pies. Good story. THIS IS AMERICA !!
How inviting. A simpler place and time. The world needs more of this in this day and time.
I truly remember the place, I been there before when I was very young and I met the man that owns the place...
Wish there were more places like this still around

With the way the cities have become, maybe folks will return to the great small towns that we came from.
Tell Wal-Mart to take a hike. This is a real store. God bless Texas.
Great to see a small business thriving and still valued in the community.

Bob Phillips, I heard years ago that you had kicked the bucket! I started watching you mostly because my dad liked watching you (and suddenly I get all emotional), but that was when you worked for Channel 4 (KRLD), I believe it was, and your little segments were know all over as "4 Country Reporter!" Then something happened, I don't know what it was, but suddenly you branched out on your own, and became "Texas Country Reporter", and all this time I was thinking you were at least 10 years older than I am, until I just Googled you up, and found out you're only 3 years older than I am! I'll turn 66 this coming September 19th! Well it felt good to find you here on KZread, so take care, and stay safe on them old Texas Highways! I know how bad they can get, because I used to drive trucks, and I've been to every corner or Texas, and the US!...👍🚛🇺🇸
What a great story. There was a general store like this in Porter, TX we went to when I was a little one to pick up the mail and get a coke for a nickel from the coke machine...great memories.

So Awesome!
I've lived just 3 miles from Bergheim for twenty years. Sorry to report the Jones family has sold the property, but that also means a well-deserved rest for Stanley and Charlene. A small business campus seems to be emerging there now, but without much change to the buildings, at least so far. Since the store itself is a state-recognized historic place, I imagine it will be preserved. On the other hand, the nearby intersection of TX 46 and FM 3351 is being rapidly developed. It's not unrealistic to think that the day is not far off when this quaint little spot will be just another San Antonio suburb. Why do people flock to the Hill Country to live like sardines in densely packed subdivisions of tract homes? There are at least a half dozen other places in Texas where they can live like that, not destroy any natural beauty, AND be closer to the big city amenities they seem to love so much. Sigh ....

With the natural beauty of the area and the flight of city dwellers, for reasons of overcrowding and political decay in their previous cities, these places soon become the very thing they fled. So sad to see the spoilage of quaint peaceful communities due to all the craziness going on. Enjoy while you have it.

It's odd that corporations who cram climate change down our throats, leave their huge carbon footprints all over the hillcountry when they choose, out of 50 states, to move their corporation to one of the hottest places in the country. Seems pretty damn hypocritical to me. They helped create the circumstances they're running from. If climate change was an actual thing, they wouldn't have moved, along with a ton of employees, to a place where the power usage will be quadrupled. I think they know the truth. CO2 isn't a problem. As the earth spins, it flings all that extra CO2 right out the hole in the ozone. Thank you spray cans and freon.

I've been in country stores all over the state from Rio Medina to Buda, Refugio to Kress. Loved every one of them. I rarely pass up an opportunity to visit one. I always find something I have to have.
Just went here today 6/14/2021. Thank you Stanley for your help!

Cool story, beautiful tradition.
Love from New Braunfels, TX! ❤️. We’re practically next door neighbors!

Love to read the comments of people that lived there or steal their. Love you on RFD TV From GA
My grandfather started a store in McCook Texas back in the 40,s. McCook Mercantile is the name of it and my cousin runs it today. They still have in store credit , You can get a 12” crescent wrench and a six pack of beer any day. The town of McCook today has two grain elevators and a church. Farming and ranching is mainly what makes it .

It's good to hear about places like this that are still going.
Grew up with a place like this near by.. It's nice to see these little places exist today.
My grand parents owned a county store in Freedom NH and I spent my summers there with them. My grandfather could do just about anything, in the back of the store he had a butcher shop, and deli, on the side of the store there was an area where he could work on cars. He also was on the fire dept, drove a school bus, and my grandmother ran the store, PO, and was the town clerk. When my Grand father died they closed the school and had to use the buses to transport people to and from the church because there was no room to park for miles.

This is great! I love how they kept the original store front! And all the old fashioned things.
Thanks. I never thought that area would grow so fast! A friend lives in Bergheim and her mail goes through Boerne now.
I like all the little stores in the hill country and also in Corpus Christi!
Stanley, you look wonderful! A great profile of a great family. My kids still talk about visiting the Bergheim store and getting a YooHoo. We love you, still!

This is awesome. I love how it is still old. We have a local Amish store that was real small, crowded and dark. Just real old fashioned. Well that have done so well they bought a new store because of the tourist and not it is wide open, new, and bright. All the charm that us locals loved about it is gone.
I remember going into that store when I was a kid... Hasn't changed a bit...wow!
Beautiful Story
Fantastic Mr,bergheim, for that we need to maintain our postmasters alive, count with me,Manny Eagle, the Grapfhic Reporter.n.c.
More jeans in the Bergheim shop than in my wallmart. Cool job.
I met Stanley in the 1980's when I drove truck cross country ..... I liked to stop and eat at Boerne at the motel cafe (what was name of that? ....was it cascades?) ....then I would go out of my way to stop in to buy small stuff .....reminded me of my Grandfather's old store and they made me feel to home

Fascinating
That alone is enough to make a person want to move to Texas. I hope it stays around for another 100 years.
This is so beautiful
I remember working in that area and they would prepare and sale ham and bologna sandwiches. I'll never forget that.
I pass through there every time I go to Bandera. It's so small, if you blink you can miss it. Never went in the store. Next time I will.
I go by there on 281north up from San Antonio. I'm going to drop by
Next time I'm on Hwy. 46 I'll stop by. I've seen the place but never knew it's history.
He looks quite a bit like the late actor "George Kennedy" Blessings to y'all from a fellow Texan.
1903...way to go..hope for many more years
I love them old country store lobe it
These people should go to Noonday Texas to the Blue Top store. It’s got the best little cafe in Texas there. Hamburgers like you’ve never seen. And they sale steak dinners right over the counter. It’s little but it’s one of the best cafes in the world. Check it out sometime.
Would gladly bring this guy two burgers from the grill, baked beans, and potato salad.
God BLESS you.

this is North of San Antonio Highway 281 you take a left to get to Bergheim
Sadly, the Bergheim Store has closed permanently. I believe the family that used to own the store has sold it. Last time I went by there, it was some sort of food and drink establishment.
Up in Canada we had stores like this in small communities. They died out in the 70's and 80's. It used to be so quiet inside them, just the squeaky wood floors made noise.
Wow nice 👍
❤
There used to be at least 8 stores like this in communities across Houston County. They were forced out of business by the Environmental controls on the gasoline tanks they had to have to comply to Federal rules, and Walmart. Simply cost too much to redo the tanks and pumps for them to afford.
Im moving there too
You& me both Sir, the world is moving way to fast these days!

Yea mom and pop so much close knit stores. Friendly people day in and day out. Walmart so big so empty 10 minutes to find an "employee " so I just left ,,,,, I go there "MAYBE" 3 OR 4 TIMES A YEAR.🤔😮
reminds me of Montgomery Texas
I think this is what Alan Jackson meant when he sang “small town southern man”
social progress is vital, but some things work just fine how they are. small town general stores are slowly being eradicated by big boxers
I love how they play this off as a small town - it's literally 5-6 miles from the northern city limit of San Antonio, and 30 miles to downtown!
